AFAIK message attachments are the only stored items deleted when the
storage limit is reached.
Correct.
And even that is optional. In the Message Formatting section of the group's Settings page is an "Out of Space" option which allows you to choose between deleting old attachments and rejecting ("bouncing") new messages with attachments.
