If you were to open the message and look at it in raw html, it should have something like <img src="http://mydomain.com/thisimage.jpg">. The reason your mail reader is rendering a box with an X in it is because there is no longer any image at the location
Please understand that these emails were sent
before you deleted the source images. In response to the deletions, groups.io can fix the message in the message archive...but it cannot go out and edit something that already resides in a subscriber's mailbox.
