Are you sure?
Have a look at your message as posted here in GMF. See that big vase of flowers at the bottom? That image is in a file attached to your message.
So if GMF did not allow attachments your reply would have been bounced back by the mailer daemon and would never have reached GMF.
But I would have seen a "Message bounced because of attachments" entry in GMF's Activity log, had I bothered to look.
