Thanks to both Shal and toki for their insight (I'm the OP on this topic).? Like toki, I've dealt with many clients and sites that provided emesis inducing IMAP support.? I'm pleased (and not at all surprised) to hear that Gio doesn't do anything weird with plus addresses.

That's not specifically an IMAP feature, it is a Gmail feature.
It is described in one of the early RFCs. Early as in pre-2000.
I used to use it, but so many sites barfed (^1) on it, that I quit doing
so.(#2)
A couple of email clients also barf when sending this type of address.
GMail correctly handles it.
Groups.IO correctly handles it.
#1: Barfed as, they either completely rejected it, or else dropped
everything before the "+".
#2: GMail strips dots out of the addressee part of the email address, so
I started using a complex system of dots to track who was selling my
email address to spammers. Any email I receive that is dot free, is from
a spammer.
