G-11/Gemini compatibility with ASI Air
I recently bought an ASI Air to connect mount, telescope, camera, and guide scope.? I tried connecting the ASI Air using a USB cable that fit in the port on the Gemini.? When I try to access the mount through the phone app, the ASI Air does not recognize the mount.? What do I need to do to get the mount and the ASI Air to talk to each other.? I plugged the USB cable to a USB-2 port, not USB-3 in the ASI Air.

开云体育Hi Bob, Do I understand that you can see your imaging and guide cameras
already on the app? Gemini's should be really easy as they
remember time location etc. On 25/2/23 10:48, SkywatchBob wrote:

开云体育Maybe check that the cable is good? Do you see Losmandy Gemini as one of the choices in the Mount menu? My Air connects to the mount OK, though sometimes the USB connection is loose on the Air. |

开云体育I agree with Zolt – whenever my ASIAir fails to recognize/connect to my G11G, it is always due to the cable. Either the connection is poor at the ASIAir end (loose), or the USB-B (printer) cable itself is bad. In the former case, you can try plugging it into different USB ports on the ASIAir – preferably USB-2.0. You want to keep your imaging camera on USB-3.0.? --Rob ? I plugged the USB cable to a USB-2 port, not USB-3 in the ASI Air.The ASIAIR / Gemini-2 combination works great! I have used USB to connect the two no problem. That said you need to used the correct USB ports on both for best results.? On the Gemini-2 you must use the square USB Type B port. The Gemini-2's front panel USB Type A port is a low power port only.? On the ASIAIR side you could use any port - use a USB 2 port because it is wasteful to use a USB 3 port for the tiny amount of data used to communicate with Gemini-2. Save the USB 3 ports for cameras and other connections that need the higher data rates.? That said IME the best connection to use between the Gemini-2 and ASIAIR is the Ethernet port. First the Ethernet port of the ASIAIR uses different hardware on the RPi4b board and no / low impact on the USB port overhead. Using the Ethernet port also frees up a USB port for other peripherals.? If you add high performance mini travel router into the mix your Wi-Fi range will suddenly become much larger and your smartphone or tablet user interface will feel a lot faster because it is no longer being hamstrung by the low performance native Wi-Fi of the RPi4 or CM.? Adding the travel router also allows you more flexibility in that you can now reliably connect to you home net work and work from a laptop or PC and a bigger screen. Oh and you get to be warm too.? I have been using the Gemini-2 mini and ASIAIR this way all through Covid. Or do you then connect the Air to the WiFi using Station Mode??I've been using a wired connection from the Air to my home router, which works great (though I do have to deal with yet another cable, of course), at least if I'm not out in the field somewhere. |
开云体育A travel router?! ?I travel full-time w/ my AsiAir and G11 for many years now. ? I also test AsiAir updates on a few other Apple devices before I go production with my primary iPad. What is clear is the tablet devices are what hits the speed. All I have is a 5 GB wifi extender and my network is FAST but it depends which tablet I’m testing on. I had been using the old TP-Link nano travel routers in Bridge mode to get an Ethernet Wi-Fi connection to the Gemini 2 for many years with a laptop. nearby. Then the ASIAIR came out and suddenly the Wi-Fi speed as well as the Ethernet port became particularly important. My research led me to the small GL.iNET travel routers which have 2-3 switched 1Gbps Ethernet ports and faster Wi-Fi standards. At the time, the old Slate AC750 had 3x 1Gbps Ethernet ports. Then came the Beryl which has 3x switched 1Gbps ports plus dual band 2.4GHz. & 5GHz. AC1300. Currently the fastest mini travel router is the NEW Beryl AX3000 which is a blazing fast Wi-Fi6 router with 574Mbps 2.4GHz. and 2402Mbps on 5GHz. bands. If you want to see your preview frames load almost instantly this is the travel router for you.? I'm running the Beryl AC1300 and plan to buy the new BerylAX3000 soon.? The new Beryl AX3000 only has 2 Ethernet ports so no cable connection is possible here but if you buy the Slate AX1300 you will have the necessary 3 ports.?? ? -- Chip Louie Chief Daydreamer Imagination Hardware? ? ?Astropheric Weather Forecast - South Pasadena, CA? |
开云体育The reviews of (an earlier) GL router used in conjunction with ASIAir Pro were not promising at the link below (admittedly from two years ago): ? ? I’d love to be able to occasionally monitor how my imaging runs are coming along without stepping outside (in the cold) and standing within 8 feet of my scope. I’m not a Wi-Fi network guy, but clearly there has to be a simple Wifi solution for overcoming the slow, short-range communication capabilities of the ASIAir without physically connecting an ethernet cable from the ASIAir to my nearest (indoor) Linksys Velop or Apple Airport Express.? --Rob ? Hi Rob, Don't do what that person did. The person who posted the review / experience of the Slate router had nothing to do with shortcomings of the GL.iNET Slate AC750 router and everything to do with shortcomings of the person posting.? The poster had no idea what they were doing and didn't understand the ASIAIR or how networks and routers work.? ? I posted how to use a travel router to fix the ASIAIR Pro and now Plus Wi-Fi problems years ago. Hundreds of people have used that information to sucessfully resolve the ASIAIR Wi-Fi defect.? Yours is the simplest situation - fix the ASIAIR Wi-Fi so you can use it as it should have worked out of the box to directly communicate with a smartphone or tablet, not over the house LAN or Wi-Fi network. I use Android phones and tablets so if you have an iOS phone or tablet I can help with the router but others will need to pitch in on the phone side though it is pretty much the same with different ICONs used. Many as in almost all iphone and tablet users? have found that turning off wireless data helps getting their iOS devices to connect to the Wi-Fi more reliably. That is my one iOS pro-tip.? Once you have decided to act instead of just suffering all you need is the travel router, buy one with external antennas, and a couple of CAT6 cables long enough to connect your ASIAIR and Gemini-2 to wherever you place the router. On router placement, do not be tempted to locate the router as part of the moving payload. To do this makes the Wi-Fi signal pattern change as the mount moves and you will be confused by the lack of Wi-Fi signal strength consistency.? The rest is easy and takes maybe five minutes to setup if you have done it before and maybe ten.minutes if not. If you get a GL.iNET travel router let me know, and if interested I will walk you through it. Or look for my old posts which had screen shots and comments on the settings.? Brian,
I'm confused, what's he (Jim) asking?? With the ASIAIR and Gemini-2 connected to a Wi-Fi router you already have a complete standalone network you can connect to using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.? What does the USB3 data line do?? -- Chip Louie Chief Daydreamer Imagination Hardware? ? ?Astropheric Weather Forecast - South Pasadena, CA? |
I can't speak for Jim (hopefully he'll chime in here) I assume what he meant was (for example) plugging in computer via USB and then other devices via ethernet. As a data point toward this topic, I have a G11G and am currently using an Astroberry and a GL.Inet AX1800 to control it. The G11G's Gemini is connected to the AX1800 by ethernet cable, as is the Astroberry. The AX1800 then connects over Wifi to the house network, where I can remotely access the Astroberry. I've never used USB to connect to the Gemini, ethernet has always worked trouble free for me. I purchased the AX1800 because the wifi on the Raspberry Pi running Astroberry was too weak, and I needed to run an ethernet cable to the Gemini. So, the AX1800 has given me a stable wifi connection to the Astroberry and the Gemini.
As for how I set up the three devices, Losmandy has a good video on how to set the Gemini up for ethernet control, and there was a post somewhere on here (sorry, can't recall exactly where at the moment) describing how to set up a "travel router" for this usage case. |
Thanks for all your help. I tried a different USB cleaner and it worked.? Apparently, the old cable was bad. Thanks, Bob On Thu, Mar 9, 2023, 1:03 PM <JamesNash000@...> wrote: Hello |

HelloHi James, You just plug an Ethernet cable into the ASIAIR and then ug the other end into the Gemini-2. The Gemini-2 should appear as an option in the ASIAIR mount menu. Select Losmandy and it should work. You may need to set the ports and protocol in the Gemini-2 to match your Gemini-2 but I'm out of town and cannot go look at the settings.? ? -- Chip Louie Chief Daydreamer Imagination Hardware? ? ?Astropheric Weather Forecast - South Pasadena, CA? |
