Re: DEC: Heavy Duty TR alarm - G11
Hi Bren, that's a mystery! The screen shot that Trevor posted indicates that the encoders are still at 1x resolution, which the L6 firmware automatically sets to 4x when it first detects v3 PIC firmware.

Hi Trevor, the screen I wanted to see was with the Firmware version on it (Firmware/SRAM screen). But what I'm seeing from your screenshot, either the main unit firmware is not updated to 6.x or the servo PIC controller is not updated to v3.x. When these are up to date, the screen you attached should look like this (note the quadrupled RA/DEC step resolution checkboxes and the RA Positioning Resolution that's 4x greater than the one in your shot):

What would really be helpful is a screen shot of the physical hand controller screen when you navigate to Menu->HC->Info. This should show something like this (your graphics chip will most likely be different, as my HC is really old):

HC fixed...it'll be back to owner soon and we can sort this other issue.?? Though I fell for ye old "I didn't calibrate new screen trick"....so it wasn't responding properly and changed language...then the penny dropped...re-boot and cal screen!?? All good.?? Sigh..been caught by that more than once....Ya think I'd learn by now....but no!

Re: G11 tracking and parking problem
That's what I thought for a long time.?
Turns out, cranking down on the clutches can put excessive loads on your bearings and cause irregular wear on your shaft. It can also mess with your tracking and lead to larger tracking excursions. Super tight clutches can create problems in the long run.
?
I'll see if I can find the thread that discusses it and I'll post the link. Basically I now roll the elevation to zero (with the scope off), then put the scope on, and then balance the counterweights on the RA axis and the fore/aft position on the Dec axis very carefully. Personally I then put a piece of painters tape on my losmandy bar and mark a line even with the center of my Losmandy Mount clamp on the top of the mount so I can easily reposition the OTA. Then I remove the OTA, set the elevation back to match my lattitude, replace the OTA and I'm off to the races.? With a properly balanced OTA, I literally just turn the clutch till it makes contact with the pad and stop, but I'm using Michael Herman's high friction clutch disks. With a clean stock disk you can probably got 1/8 or 1/4 turn past contact and stop. I can easily push my mount around in both RA and DEC without loosening the clutches.? |
Re: G11 tracking and parking problem
Ryan, I do crank down on them. Am I not supposed to do that?

Re: G11 tracking and parking problem
Heads up Art, while it may be contaminated clutch pads, your comment made it seem like you really crank down your clutches. I used to do the same, but best practice is a well balanced scope in RA and Dec with clutches that just make contact.?
A power supply issue or connection issue could also possibly cause an intermittent stop of tracking and if the power comes back on and the position of the mount is anywhere other than CWD there will be significant pointing error which could cause pier collision or failure to find park position on subsequent slews. Check your logs for disconnects.?
occasionally I¡¯ll have tracking errors like streaking stars and I have to return to CWD manually and do a hard power recycle with the switch. This seems to fix it. Usually it happens after using sharpcap for lunar imaging while waiting for astronomical darkness for my NINA sequence¡ it¡¯s like the mount gets stuck in lunar rate.? |
Re: DEC: Heavy Duty TR alarm - G11
Sorry I don¡¯t have MU. ?I Have HC.?? But here is FW flash info screen from HC prior to sending to owner.
?
His HC is giving issues and Display is bad...see here.?? Not sure if the socket issue played a part.....I tried display all dead no response but "splash screen loaded and then boot options".?? But no touch worked.?? I saw the screen...tore it apart...saw the socket.??
?
As said not sure if this played a part but HC does need a display.
?
So the above...kinda moot...till I get a display in.? This crack was present but there is a new one nearby that probably did it in.?? I packed it really well....but who knows.......could have been temp changes or big bad postal....it is what it is!?

Re: G11 tracking and parking problem
The temp dropped about 20 degrees F between sunset and when the problem occurred. I suppose the clutche(s) could be slipping even if the knobs are tight. I have had the scope for 4 years. Maybe I should have a clutch cleaning party with the scope. I will play around with it tomorrow while I'm checking into some other things. |

Re: G11 tracking and parking problem
I know my clutch knobs were very tight because I had tightened them just a couple of hours before. I recovered from the problem by restarting the sequence in Nina, which re-centered the target, and I did not have any more instances of this afterwards. I would think that it would have continued and maybe even got worse. But I will certainly double check this.

WRT To the HC end plate "wrong way round".....these images show the issue and what happens.?? Its important users know this if they take the HC apart.?? There should be no reason except to clean the screen.?? But......if you go further you can cause this.

G11 tracking and parking problem
My G11 has had intermittent problems where it appears to stop tracking during imaging, and I get star trails. Or, at the end of the night it does not park like it is told to by NINA. It one instance it ignored the limits and collided with the pier.
Last night was the tracking problem again. Fortunately I caught it early and only lost 3 images. In the morning I checked and it had not parked. Just stopped tracking at the end of session.I understand that the parking problem could possibly be app-induced. But I would appreciate if the logs could be looked at for a possible G2 problem.?
The tracking problem started at about 05-13-2025 0507 UT (05-13-2025 0007 CDT)
The parking problem probably close to 05-13-2025 1030 UT (05-13-2025 0530 CDT)
I am running G2 L6.12, HC V1.64, Servos V3.0 Gemini.Net V1.1.28.0
?
I have attached the log files.

Thank you!

Re: Gemini2 does not select solar system Objects
Try restarting Gemini one more time, and do the screen calibration, again. Do that carefully, you may have better luck with a stylus than your finger. It sounds like your screen calibration is off by a lot.

Re: Gemini2 does not select solar system Objects
This is a follow up to my original post. With no luck with the suggestions made by the group, I decided to start from the beginning with the hand controller.? There is a description in the user manual to align the buttons on the hand controller, which is something I never did when I first booted up the hand controller, and never saw any problems with the? alignment of the buttons. This has to be done very quickly by touching the blue screen during star up that is? is only visible for one second. I followed this procedure with the hand controller and things went from bad to worse. After touching the blue screen, the start menu not only was displayed in english, but when I pushed the startup buttons, a multitude of other languages appeared for each start up option button. No matter what I did, I could not get passed the start up screen, something was off. So I decided to see if my Gemini Web access was still functional and lo and behold it was. This made me think the hand controller firmware may be corrupted. So I downloaded the firmware update program. Following the instructions, I selected the check boxes for the hand controller, the Gemini2 and the SDRAM to be flashed, box and I did not update object catalog files. Once I checked to make sure the IP address was correct, I proceeded to run the firmware update program with the SDRAM flashed with new software. During he firmware update, for a brief second the hand controller screen returned to normal. Once complete,? I turned off the Gemini 2 and turned it back on. The new files from the Gemini2 started uploading to the hand controller. However, after this firmware update and SDRAM flash, I ended with the same display and problem with the hand controller, and in addition to that the hand controller screen back ground is now lilac color with the buttons showing as a purple color. Again, as before, selecting the buttons still cycles through with different languages and the startup screen is the only screen I see on the hand controller and I can't get past it.? If anyone can shar with me a similar situation or further steps to take that would be helpful. I've attached a screenshot of my hand controller after the flash and firmware update to version 6.12.

Re: HC not connecting to Gemini
I'm assuming G2 tallboy
?
First do you have another HC to try?
?
Have you set Serial ports to ?? Sometimes serial ports are different baud rates (for GPS etc), the HC needs this baud. .??
?
Its possible the microSD cars have been swapped over....you can read them on a computer to see their file contents.?? If they look ok you can still try rebuilding the appropriate cards files but do it one at a time to see results (but format the cards first).?? The MU SD card does write to the HC ARM and card.??
?
If you are concerned....you can redo the SD cards with the correct files and reinserting them to write to the HC (of MU) by downloading combined.zip file.....and rebuilding both cards.?? Of course doing them one at a time or letting the MU update the HC.? Then inserting them....letting the unit to update itself directly.?? But just as easy to just do the MU card and it will write to the HC.
?
Lastly...if you have disassembled the HC......be very careful reassembling the RJ port "case end Plate" of the HC!?? It is cut lower on one side and you can make it fit both ways (aka upside down).?? But if you do this (put it in upside down) the port RJ fingers will be pressed or forced up away from contact with the cable pins.?? Only close inspection shows this.?? this drops out coms to the HC....all you ever see...if it gets power and GND....is the splash screen.?? Now you would think that this forces away all the contact fingers....no I did it it just forced the rxd pin away, it still have pwr (5V) and GND....just contacting (intermittently).
?
Get back
?
Cheers
