Hi Ron, welcome to the Losmandy family :)
?
It would make life a lot easier if you could post some pictures of the mount and the gemini. I suspect you may have the Gemini 1 if it¡¯s from 2005 but, you also mention it was updated so maybe it is, in fact, a G2. A photo will clear that up in a second.
?
As for connections, the Gemini 2 can connect to a computer via a standard USB B connector (the square, printer type) or via ethernet. Also, the hand controller is not needed at the scope if using a computer. With the computer all you really need is the ASCOM platform and the Gemini.net driver (for windows) or the Linux alternative that I¡¯m not familiar with so I won¡¯t mention it much. Once the ASCOM and Gemini.net are installed, any software that communicates through them can talk to your mount, like N.I.N.A. or Stellarium.
?
USB connections are much simpler, but ethernet gives more advantages. Your choice really.
?
Also, depending on your Gemini¡¯s software version, you may not need to upgrade right away. If you have Level 5.1 you can use the mount while you get acquainted with its operation and quirks. Then, when you¡¯re more familiar and comfortable, you can upgrade to the latest and greatest level 6. If you¡¯re already at level 6 but not the latest then upgrading is quite easy.
Lastly, Losmandy¡¯s youtube channel is a wealth of information regarding their mounts and initial setup tutorials. Worth a watch
?
enjoy your new mount
