N3BYR HF Node 40m ONLINE! And Now on TPRFN 2
Good Morning! The N3BYR Middle GA data network node is now *back* on HF packet and VARA HF. The antenna is back to a NVIS configuration and should be usable within GA, FL, AL, TN, SC, and NC depending on Propagation (Further out is also accessible with good propagation). The N3BYR is now also a part of the TPRFN network currently as a polling station, more information on TPRFN is at https://www.tprfn.net/. Details for HF VARA and HF Packet frequencies is on https://n3byr.com B. Greg Colburn Jr., USAF (ret.) Winlink/Packet Node (Lost Station on Data Network - Silent Key) 2
Good Morning All, It is with both a saddened heart and surprise to me that Matthew Atwood (WE1H) became a Silent Key back in January. His Data node up in New Hampshire fell silent recently and was still running up until the beginning of May. For those who knew Matt he was an avid packeteer and active on both HF and VHF packet. His knowledge and assistance will be greatly missed and he has been a wealth of information any time I have run into problems with keeping the central Georgia data network available for both HF and VHF users to include VARA HF. I was unaware that Matt was fighting cancer for the past few years and lost his fight Jan 21, 2024 – It was just something that never came up in our conversations on the phone or over packet. I do not know the full story, but Matt’s station remained active on the air and over the internet up until the beginning of this month. Due to being very busy the last couple weeks I did not realize until this morning that traffic messages ceased from his node or his passing. Matt’s node was the main pathway for bulletins and message traffic. This does not affect the Winlink pathway, but does affect the primarily packet/message handling. Because Matt was the best route to handle this information he was the primary inbound and the alternate pathways are no longer active. I will be reaching out to the other nodes I am connected to along with some other nodes I am not linked to for a new primary and alternate pathway. In the meantime all aspects on the N3BYR node will remain active and pathways to North and Central Florida along with Central Georgia are still reachable. B. Greg Colburn Jr., USAF (ret.) Ham Radio Cyber Sec Presentation
Good evening, I had someone remind me that I forgot to post the CyberSec presentation I did at the Stone Mountain hamfest back in November. If you are interested in the slides/presentation it is now posted under presentations on my website. I got so dang busy with the Christmas Lights I forgot…. https://www.n3byr.com Speaking of Christmas Lights – The tree our company did at the Museum of Aviation was done in a similar fashion as the house. My house took Best Decorated Interactive display for the area (included a sign presentation to us by the City), and the tree took first place in the Festival of Trees… and yes the tree played music too ? Happy New Year everyone! B. Greg Colburn Jr., USAF (ret.) N3BYR Packet Station - Downtime
Good evening all, My Packet/VARA station is relied upon by many stations on the HF side for the Winlink gateway and other services and the VHF packet side is used for local traffic and gateway connects. When potential severe weather is expected I preemptively posture the station so that capability can be preserved for any aftermath (local and further that may need the resource). In prep of weather coming tomorrow (and my schedule assisting Toys for Tots this weekend outside of all things “Ham”) I have turned off the HF transceivers and folded the tower down. I am also turning off the VHF packet station this evening within the next hour. These resources will be turned back on tomorrow evening after I am sure the potential winds and thunderstorms have passed. While the station is offline this evening I will be doing a few maintenance items also just to tidy up the operation. If you have any questions regarding the frequencies or modes please visit the Winlink.org website or my personal website that contains details on using the nodes. B. Greg Colburn Jr., USAF (ret.) GA Digital Intertie - New Nodes
Good evening everyone, We now have three hard linked nodes in GA connected – This allows for hoping from Node to Node and allows you the ability to hop to a node and then jump onto VHF or HF from those nodes. The N3BYR Node also has the ability to handle RMS Gateway traffic via the BBS module without the need for a native application installed on your system (I.E. Winlink Express) in a pinch. The GA Digital Intertie group is the group for node owners and those interested in use the nodes for RMS gateway, World wide BBS traffic, GA traffic, and FL traffic between GA and FL. If you are interested in joining the GA Digital interie group please reach out to me directly. All nodes with an asterisks (*) also have HF packet and/or HF VARA North GA: KA4KKF – Monroe (city not county), GA (Walton Co.) KE4QCM – Stone Mountain, GA (DeKalb Co) Mid Georgia (Current Hub connecting all nodes): N3BYR* - Warner Robins, GA (Houston Co.) Gulf/Panhandle Florida: KK4DIV* – Lynn Haven, FL (Bay Co. – Panama City/Panama City Beach) East Central Florida: KD4WLE – Titusville, FL (Brevard Co) B. Greg Colburn Jr., USAF (ret.)
