Irwell HF Transceiver Modulator update.

Hi Everyone,
?
For those who are interested, I have just updated my blog with information that follows the design work of my multimode modulator module that can be used on homebrew transceivers and in particular my Irwell HF Transceiver.

Cool. I once did partly and them stopped. We get ubitx v3, 4, 5 and 6? here in India that covers all bands . Thus no need to make single piece .

Irwell HF Transceiver Update

Edited

It has been a while since I updated my blog with progress regarding the development of my Irwell HF transceiver and for those who have been following the project, I realize you may find the lack of updates frustrating and I get it!

Now, while it may appear that I have not been working on the project, I can assure you I have and the next blog post will be coming soon.

In short, I have had a frustrating time with the design of the modulator, which has turned out to be a greater task than I envisaged.

Making the decision to include FM as a mode of operation opened up a rather large a can of worms. The microphone amplifier circuits I featured in my last blog post are fine for SSB and AM modulation but not ideal for FM modulation, as they lack pre-emphasis. Also to avoid over deviating in FM mode some form of clipping/limiting is required, then there is the small matter of how to implement FM modulation at the component level.

In the end I decided to generate the FM modulation using a PLL IC and VCO. This was no easy task, as the PLL chip data sheet was a nightmare to make sense of and I had a huge learning curve writing the software to control the PLL IC, I am not a software engineer and my knowledge in this area is limited to what I have taught myself.

After building various prototype circuits and many hours of work, I feel I have achieved my design goal and I am now in the process of finalizing a suitable PCB for the module. Once I get the PCB's back from fabrication, I will build and test one and if all goes well, I can move onto the final few modules needed to complete the project.

I will go into much greater detail when I update the blog.

For now, best 73 from

Andy (G6LBQ)

Re: Templates for circuit boards Multiband Bitx

I have been thinking about replacing the VFO/Bandswitching board with something that will enable CAT commands.
Or building something that allows easy interoperation....
This should allow operation of ATU and more importantly control of my Mag Loop tuner:?

Something to work on now that I am 'mostly retired' - maybe over the winter of 2025-2026...

Now you convert it to smd. Using 1206 size for ease of soldering. Not a big issue , i suppose.?

Re: Templates for circuit boards Multiband Bitx

This is the current status but I still have to change something with the mixers

Templates for circuit boards Multiband Bitx

Hello
I am looking for a PCB layout for the exiter LPF and BPF as well as the amplifier
I work with Sprintlayout and trace the boards. Some layouts can also be found in the archive but not everything
I am missing the layout of the bandpass module. You can trace this using the pictures in the manual but the question is whether there are ground planes on both sides or only at the top.
The exiter only has ground planes on the underside.
I have started with the exiter and am working on it
I have also replaced the wired ADE-1 mixer with the SMD version as the old version can hardly be found anymore

Re: hello new here looking for info

Hi David,
?
The Multiband Bitx I developed is a 10 year old project and whilst kits were available I no longer have or stock kits for this project though it should still be possible to build it without a kit.
?
Currently I am working on a much bigger and ambitous project that I call the "Irwell HF Transceiver" but the development has been slow. I tend to post about my projects on the blog though it does need updating to bring it upto date and I hope to do that soon.
