God's Message Of Love
Today's Scripture: Jesus said to His disciples: "If a man loves me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our home with him. He who doesn't love Me doesn't keep My words. The word which you hear isn't Mine, but the Father's who sent Me. "I have said these things to you, while still living with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you. "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful. You heard how I told you, 'I am going away, and I will come back to you.' If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced, because I said 'I am going to My Father;' for the Father is greater than I. Now I have told you this before it happens so that, when it happens, you may believe." John 14:23-29 **** Today's sermon/reflection has been adapted by me from this source, with all changes being my sole responsibility: https://www.voicings.com/sermon/pdf/3346. Unfortunately, it's behind a subscription pay wall, but if you enjoy material like this, you may find it worthwhile. I've used this source occasionally as the basis for some of my other postings as well. Since I don't say this nearly often enough, I'd like to point out that in all of my postings, I'm preaching to myself as well--even primarily to myself. I have my own serious struggles with all kinds of issues. May God's merciful, loving grace be bestowed on us all as we face our own struggles to better love and serve Him and love and serve others in His name! God's Blessings to you all! * A story is told about the Apostle John, who wrote: "God is Love." In the evening of his long life, he would sit for hours with his younger disciples gathered at his feet. One day, one of his disciples complained: "John, you always talk about love, God's love for us, and our love for one another. Why don't you tell us about something else besides love?" The beloved disciple who once, as a youth, laid his head over the Lord's heart is said to have replied: "Because there is nothing else, just love ... love ... love." Love is the only way to our true human destiny -- and to the foot of the Cross -- and to the altar of God, who is Love. Today's Gospel Reading contains a portion of Jesus's "Farewell Discourses." It begins with a call for obedience and ends with the teaching that to Love God is to be obedient to His word. Jesus already has made it clear to the disciples that He is about to leave them. He says: "My little children I shall not be with you much longer... Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God still, and trust in Me... I am going now to prepare a place for you, and after I have gone and prepared you a place, I shall return to take you with Me; so that where I Am you may be too" (John 13:33,14:1,2-3). Having said that, Jesus now speaks to His disciples: "If anyone loves Me he will keep My Word, and My Father will love him, and We shall come to Him and make Our home with Him" (John 14:23). "If anyone loves Me he will keep My Word." Jesus does not ask us to obey Him out of obligation, or out of fear, or out of a desire to get something from Him. Instead, it's the other way around. He wants us to obey out of love for Him. We don't follow Jesus because we are forced to. God will not compel us to do anything--and to act in compulsion is not acting in love. We follow Him because we want to. We follow Him because we love Him. We follow Him because we want to be with Him. We follow Him because we want to make our home with Him. We follow Him because we revere Him. In Psalm 67, we read, "Let the nations be glad and sing for joy. May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth revere Him." In a book of essays inspired by the Book of Psalms, one writer recalls that, as a child, she would run through the living room of a friend's home, singing for joy. The object of her delight was a colorful clown mask that hung on the wall call
