Patanjali, Yoga Sutra II.16
It's the "pain" that is avoided not necessarily the karma.
Past pain and suffering has already been experienced and presently experienced suffering has already been activated too, so only suffering in the future can be avoided. The best way to accomplish this, according to Patanjali, is to promote sattva and decrease rajas and tamas. This is accomplished by meditating on the pranava which provides the ideal opportunity for the sattva to permeate all our actions, thus avoiding the suffering that lies in the future. Suffering occurs when rajas and tamas predominate over sattva and cause our actions to be unsatisfactory. YMMV.
