I went to all those with the Seven Gables being within
walking distance of an apartment I had in the University
District.? Randy Finley and his sister Pat (who was TV actress)
bought a lot of the old theaters and renovated them specializing
in art house and foreign films.? When I was briefly living in
the Seattle area again in 1990 I saw a few films at a multiplex
theater they had by renovating what was a car dealership
building I think. They had a window on the projection room which
had the platter projectors which kept the films on a loop.
I saw my first Bollywood film at the University Theater in the U
District. It was just a couple blocks up the street from my
apartment. I was out for a stroll and came upon a young Indian
guy putting up posters for the movie.? He was renting out the
theater for weekend afternoon Bollywood movie.? He invited me to
come to the show so I did.? I was the only "white guy" in the
theater.? It was interesting because CBS 60 Minutes had recently
done a segment on the Bollywood film industry that made more
movies yearly than Hollywood.
The University Theater:
Very cool.? Did you ever see films at the Grand Illusion?? It has
retained its independence and it looks like it will survive the
pandemic (note the lack of quotes).??
I saw a number of films there.? Also one day when I was going down
to U District there was a crowd gathered around the closed
elementary school.? Turned out that John Frankenheimer was shooting
a film there starring Richard Harris.? The scene was about him
walking away from the school after a criminal syndicate had threaten
to blow up the classroom where his girlfriend taught.? They had set
charges to go off and had three cameras to make sure they got the
shot.? It took three tries for the explosive to go off.? I have the
movie "99 and 44/100 % Dead!" on DVD which shows off a lot of
Seattle of that time in the 1970s.
