Re: FT857 + FC-40 + CAT
Hi Phil My home contest station have FTDX10 and FTDX101D and I am not the guy that usually takes a radio in baggage while travelling. I am not using FT857 at home, never, it's always OFF. After all those messagens, FC-40 seems to be the right option but not exactly for? portable operation because it's depends on FT857. LDG is fully independent and Z11 has the capability to operate with batteries. CAT port in FT857 will remains free to control radio from notebook. April will be my first experience (not counting WRTC's) with a complete station in baggage: FT857, LongWire, ATU and power supply. Let's see what happens. Thanks a lot, Phil. 73 DX from Brasil.? Re: FT857 + FC-40 + CAT
Good afternoon Thanks a lot - I had a bunch of options now and think that will be possible to spend some hours with FT857 on HF bands, if the good italian wine and food left me some time for that. Will check for a UNUN/BALUN in Italy and try that longwire. Very nice support from this FT-857 group, really amazing. Thanks and see you around. 73 DX Vitor Luis Aidar dos Santos PY2NY, SP9NY, V26NY Caixa Postal 204 Jaboticabal, SP (Brasil) 14870-970

Re: FT857 + FC-40 + CAT
For a travel/portable tuner I prefer the Z11ProII over the AT-100 or AT-200.? Smaller footprint, lower current draw and accepts internal batteries so no additional power source is needed. Tuning range and power handling is the same as the AT-100.? All of them are wider range than a FC40 but probably need a Balun or UNUN to work with long wire type antennas.

Vitor,
why don't you consider a AT-200 Pro from LDG? not weatherproof but way capable of tuning almost everything(I guess better than FC-40) and CAT is completely independent. Only drawback is that it will recognize band change only if you tx, switching bands after tuning them will require a brief press of ptt to recall last tuning for that band frequency(very quick, like a fraction of a sec). It could be even remoted, no connection beside the coax and some sort of power supply. Once tuned, you could even shut down the power and save battery. I have a AT-100 Pro, it will tune 1.5W and it could be a good choice for QRP(though form factor could be smaller). Giuseppe Marullo IW2JWW - JN45RQ |

I have tried multiple cables. the last of which came from an unopened separation kit.?
the jack on the head is newly replaced by yaesu. I'll check the jack on the radio and if nothing found, I guess it's off to Yaesu.
Thank you for all the info.

Hi Ryan I am a little bit afraid about my conditions to use any kind of antenna, this is why I'm thinking about ATU. My initial plane was FT857+ATU FC40+Diamond CPATU Antenna? 3,5-50Mhz.? I will consider your sugestion, but looking to 10-12-15-17-20m only and spending less money. Will be 1 hour maximum per day using the radio, I think. Thanks Mike I don't need to use sound card, because CW and SSB will be the only modes in use. Will check your sugestion. I will try to use FT857 next trip to Italy, in April.
Trying to buy a FC-40 to make it with a LongWire.
Notebook with an USB cable will control radio.
And this is my doubt now...

How can I connect FT-857 with FC-40 and keep it together CAT control from a notebook?

Usually working with N1MM+.

Re: FT-857d WILL NOT TURN ON. CYCLES ON/OFF ABOUT ONCE PER SECOND CONTINOUSLY
The head sends a regular sync pulse to the radio body. If the body does not get the sync, it shuts down. The issue is with the connection from head to radio. Clean that cable contacts or even better, change the cable.?

The other one that can cause all sorts of weird issues if corrupt serial EPROM. It stores the calibration settings amongst other things. Q1065 24LC128. This was what used to die when? the old version of HAMLIB was released years ago. This software library used to cause too many writes to the 24LC128 - so many it eventually wore it out. If you go back through the HAMLIB update logs you can see they received a request from Yaesu to stop all the writes because it caused so many warranty repairs. Ah the good old days of DSE Lane Cove service center :)

Re: FT-857d WILL NOT TURN ON. CYCLES ON/OFF ABOUT ONCE PER SECOND CONTINOUSLY
I had the same issue with the unit installed in my vehicle, with the head mounted remotely. This would happen intermittantly, but got progressively more often. I even swapped with my other radio from my shack, and it was doing the same when in the vehicle. Tried setting up a mains power supply in the vehicle, incase it was a power issue, no change. Eventually traced it to the cable between the head and main unit. I recrimped the RJ12 connectors both ends, and problem solved. I have only had the issue re-occur once since, on a very hot day, above 40°C, and the vehicle had been in the sun all day, it settled down after driving for a while with the airconditioning on. Hope that helps you. |
