Re: It's a surprise!

I forgot to add that I sent them a pic I took with my phone of the label at the bottom of the radio with all the info.

Re: It's a surprise!

Yep. That's what I did when I wasn't sure, and they promptly emailed back with the good news that the 857 I had been gifted was actually an 857D.

Did you just call and ask, maybe give them a serial number?
I have the same question, need to follow up too.

Forgot to ask, how long is the OEM head cable? 6 in, or shorter?

I have an early 857D, I recall that for a few months back then someone was selling 857's at a ridiculously low price, it turned out that they were 857's aimed at Japanese noise hams and were only 10 watts of RF.

If one were using the radio as an exciter with a transverter for higher bands, for such as EME, yes, I'd be tempted to put one in. Most folks dial about, and many of the modern data protocols display in a spectrumscope manner, sometimes with the software staying with another signal. So, horses for courses.

The answer depends on your operating mode preferences and the availability of filters.?

Preferring CW, my two slots are filled with Collins 300 and 500 mechanical filters in both my FT-897D and FT-857D.? These filters are no longer attainable.?

INRAD (Vibroplex) still shows a few filters for the FT-857D other than the 300 and 500.? When it was suggested to W3PA (owner) that these two IF filters be manufactured as crystal rather than mechanical filters, he said they couldn't be made small enough to fit the radios.
