Re: FT-857D RF Power Mod

Hi Hiro, JJ1FXF,

Curious as to why you are lowering the max RF power on your 857 to 50 watts??
I have been a member of this group for quite a while but have not followed the discussions as I haven't used my 857 in a couple of years so I may have missed the reasoning.

?

Is this to protect the 857 from some type of failure??
Thanks

Re: Looking for a shop or person that can install pan adapter board for me

Sorry for the multiple edits in the above message.

After searching for the "sdr kits panadapter" I noticed that it is the same board as the one I chose, oops!
So I think you will be happy with it.

For some reason the information originally supplied with the panadapter did not show it using as wide a bandwidth as I was able to get (sorry since I have not used it in a few years I don't remember how wide it was)

But just know that it does work with a much wider bandwidth than the huprf website listed.

Curious as to why you don't want to install it yourself?? I did not find it that difficult.

cheers

Re: Looking for a shop or person that can install pan adapter board for me

Edited

Noah,
Have you considered the panadapter board from this website

?

I installed this one in my 857d several years ago and was very happy with it.
I was able to get a very wide bandwidth display (more than huprf shows) and it worked very well into a cheap SDR dongle.

I used it with HDSDR software and found it to be very useable.? I was able to use cat-control to tune the 857d from the hdsdr software.
I just had a sma pigtale hanging out of the heatsink so I can't speak to installing the sma in the heatsink but if you can it would be much more robust.

Just wanted to give you an alternate source for the choice of the panadapter.
I have not used it for a few years as I now have an Icom 7300 which I love for the price.
I was able to easily install inside the 857 under the cover.

Here is a video showing how to interface to HDSDR for cat control
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tshlXgarnBQ

I believe this is the video I used for the initial setup.

I would be happy to take some pictures if you decide to choose this board over the one you initially listed.

I have no idea how it compares to the one you chose.? But I was very happy with the results.

Cheers

Re: 1st IF filter

Do you know it's defective? Do you have 8v dc on the input and output sides of the filter? RX8v should be on each end of the filter to enable it.

Looking for a shop or person that can install pan adapter board for me

Hi all,

I am looking for a reputable person to install an SDR kits Panadapter Tap Board. Looking to mount the SMA connector that the kit uses on the heatsink of the 857 (unless somebody talks me out of that). So, the heatsink will have to be drilled and tapped.?

?

If anybody knows a good person to do this in the US, please let me know.

Noah, KE5VQL

Re: 1st IF filter

Did you try calling yaesu direct? I've had good luck buying parts directly from them.

Re: 857D and MFJ-939

Thanks for the replies. Only found one commercially available cable and it¡¯s in the UK.?

Im gonna use the MFJ in auto mode: it will tune with a low power carrier. I built a device that plugs into the ALC port on the 857 following the design I found here that drops the power to 20 watts and transmits a carrier:

Okay Patricia, And, I recently notice a news item that Radio Shack is on the comeback path.? Don't know where - but . . . . .? Phil

I was gonna make a joke about how Radio Shack still has 857s in stock, hihi...?But then to my shock and amazement, I saw that the brand still exists (in some strange form) and?I didn't have the heart to send poor Dave on another wild goose chase! ;-)

Re: Main tuning knob not working

Hey Doug,?
Check the lock button to the right of VFO nob just below the VFO/Memory toggle button.? It has happened to all of us along with the little running man or fast tune button being triggered unintentionally.? Happy Hamming, Phil?

Re: Main tuning knob not working

Is the lock feature turned on?

Anyway, new to the group. I didn't realize how popular the FT-857 is.
I've had mine since it first hit the market. I bought an FT-891 to keep
