Re: Low Speaker Volume 857-D

J. D.,
I'll have to look into that. First I got to get a schematic and maybe a service manual, if I can find one.

Try exercising the connectors on the control head and the main body.

I checked continuity of the switch in both positions and it is zero ohms in the appropriate places an both sides and high resistance in the appropriate directions. So that is an unlikely scenario. For good measure, I put contact cleaner on the switch and exercised it. No change in behavior or resistance readings.

Re: Low Speaker Volume 857-D

Take a look at the 470 uF 16 volt audio coupling cap and the relay contacts on RL1001. I would suspect the C-1550 first. Also the contact on the external speaker/phones jacks.

Re: Low Speaker Volume 857-D

My thoughts would first tend toward dirty switch contacts, then a switch failure. A mechanical problem seems more likely than electronic. Have you tried exercising the switch repeatedly to clean it?

Low Speaker Volume 857-D

I have low volume from the speaker on all modes and bands. I Can barely hear it above road noise at highway speeds. The sound is not distorted and the volume control works just fine. This is new. When I first installed it mobile it was a comfortable level.?

This just started a couple of weeks ago when I activated a park. I used headphones and flipped the switch on the back of the head to PH. That lowered the volume, but moving the switch back to S no longer makes any changes in volume level. It remains at the lower level no matter what position it is in. I checked for switch integrity with an ohmmeter. Switch does not appear faulty.?

Any suggestions?

Re: Speaker for FT-857D

On the Motorola speaker, you have to cut off the molex connector and solder a 3.5mm mono plug to the end of the wires. It does not matter which wire goes to the tip or the sleeve.

How do you wire the connector? The used ones I see have a molex or no connector at all.

I have to agree. I got one of these years ago. The case was in visually rough shape, but the speaker was powerful. I stripped the paint, primed it, and painted it the Motorola black/blue colors. It was very loud and crisp.

I have found that the Motorola HSN4032B mobile speaker is as good as it gets. It measures 5" square by 3" deep, and has been used in thousands of police cars over the years. The mobile mounting bracket can be used as a support when placed on a desk. It comes in black or white and is tuned for midrange i.e. the human voice or code. It's loud. You can sometimes find them at hamfests for a few dollars.

I use a hi-fi quality center speaker off an old surround system, I found a stereo version which allows two radios at once to be wired to it, never seen one since.
In my car I changed the Radio a while back and the centre dashboard speaker was made redundant so brought a lead out for that, no extra speakers to see.

Hi Thierry,

?

My radio came with a speaker in it and that’s the one I use on the one at home.

?

For the one in the car, I have an external speaker mounted in the roof lining just behind the front centre light fitting.

Re: Speaker for FT-857D

I use the Midland 21-406

  • No DSP but works very well
  • 8 ohm, 20W rating
  • about a 5 foot cord terminated with a
  • 3.5 mm mono plug.
  • Swivel mount which also serves as a stand in the shack
I have 2 with no issues.

Re: Speaker for FT-857D

Hi Thierry,

In my little truck, I used an old Motorola black rectangular speaker. With boring motor noise, I nned to adjust volume knob at mid level to hear a good voice transmission.

I have the MLS-200 on my FTM-400XDR and absolutely love it. I don’t know how it would sound on HF though.
