strange issue

I have a strange issue with my 857, it stopped transmitting on 30 meters yesterday, now it will not power on, and just clicks like the relays are stuck doing something.

Does this on both power supply and a 12 v car battery.? and the voltage drops on both like its shorted or something.

any suggestions??

Bill,

Did you find a solution to your reduced sensitivity issue?

Re: squelch problems

Yes there is a service menu setting, But you need a signal generator or Service Monitor to properly set it.

Re: increasing intermittent static when squelch is open.

James Clark - and others - answered your question quite well.

There are several methods to accomplish the task -? mine is the easiest - but not so pretty :)

Please look at the "Files" Section and find the folder "FT-857D AM Filter Fixes".

Download the three PDF files (October 8, 2011) from "garyposs" - that's me :)

The PDF file named "FT-857D? AM Filter Replacement" contains a full set of instructions (read carefully and understand) - with photographs - of how to replace the "static producing filter" - easily and not pretty.

The other two PDF files are for reference and familiarity with the replacement filter. Please read and understand them as well.?

Note - that 7 years later it remains working like a charm - Quietly !!!

I did have to replace the LCD Display a couple of years ago - an interesting challenge - but quite doable. Perhaps I should write an article on how to do that task. I did take stet-by-step photographs but have not written the article.

Otherwise my FT-857-D remains working quite well.

To make the filter installation even prettier - follow the suggestion by Dave Mueller with his TIFF file from February 16, 2015 in the same folder - Thanks Dave - Good Job :)? You will need to completely remove the filter assembly and pins using appropriate de-soldering tools. In addition, you will need to add SMD components on the bottom side of the transceiver circuit board which requires it's careful remove and later re-assembly.

The choice is you on how to proceed. Regardless of the method -? the results are well worth the effort !!!

Good Luck and happy Listening :)

Re: Factory loaded frequency memories.

Thanks Mitch!

It appears that the radio was untouched other than no frequency memories and menus at defaults.? From the articles I read on the Internet, the resets would clear the frequency memories and they had to be reloaded.? The term guard bands came into play so I assumed that there were factory frequencies and when it was reset, the previous owner thought he had rendered the radio useless and threw it away.? I should have realized that when I couldn't find a list that my understanding of the radio was flawed.

Re: Factory loaded frequency memories.

Hi Bill,

In the past I've seen just restoring the factory jumpers on the main board for the country of use (eg. US, EU, DE, JA, etc) to remove the MARS Mod, and a reset put them back to new, out of box condition. The usual reason for needing to program anything is when the MARS mod is in and they want the channelized 5MHz frequencies. The MARS mod clears these presets. Some radio's will have 2-3 jumpers that would need to be put back depending on the LOT Number of the radio and the mod that was done. I'm on my 4th one personally and the first 2 were the same, the third and forth ones are each different than the first 2, revision changes I suppose.

I haven't seen a list for what you are wanting, only the 5MHz stuff. I do know Yaesu has on occasion replaced the serial eeprom when sent in for repairs.
