Factory loaded frequency memories.
I recently saved a FT-857 from the trash pile and found that the radio appeared to have gone through hard and soft resets.? After programming in local repeaters, the radio seems to work fine. Searches on the Internet seem to indicate that there was a set of factory installed frequencies to set the guard bands on HF.? I'd like to return the radio back to "like new" condition and wonder if there is a list posted out there of the original frequencies. 73, Bill KK4ziu? |

Re: Using Rigblaster Advantage
David, as another MARS member, the only times that I have encountered this using a SignaLink is when the speed of transmission is too high for band conditions. Try reducing your transmission speed one or two settings. ? James B Stafford On Sunday, August 19, 2018 2:32 PM, "davidpechon@... [FT-857]" wrote:

Re: FT 857 Question NJ9Q
Is there a low power "Tune" function. There is a workaround for that. My LDG YT-100 uses the AM mode as low power. Another low power function is on the DC in the power socket, ground the brown wire, then all modes will go low power. The DC cable option is useful for a battery lead, then using another lead for mains supply without the brown wire grounded for mains power supply lead. This achieves auto QRP for portable battery use. |

I agree that it sounds like a filter issue.
?
About five years ago (give or take a couple of years?) a guy on this
list came up with a very clever and simple way of replacing the filters without removing the main board. He posted photographs of the repair. ?
Have a careful look through the "Files" section of the Yahoo home for
this list he may have posted the method there. If that fails you can search the archives but that will not be an easy task. ?
Perhaps someone else can provide better pointers?

Cool. Thank you very much. I spent a large quantity of my spare cash on buying it a couple of years ago and since then things have gone downhill a bit with my finances. I really didn't want to spend the money to have them look at it and fix a known problem for a whole bunch of money that I don't have. Thanks Chris KK6LOP - Kingman

Re: increasing intermittent static when squelch is open.
He is most probably correct, the IF filters. CF1005 typically gets changed for SSB/CW issues but CF1002 and CF1003 for FM do not and they suffer the same damage as CF1005 does from having voltage applied to the input and output pins of the filter. They are supposed to have 0.01uf voltage blocking / coupling caps on the in and out pins. The applied voltage cooks the filter from the inside out. If you remove the cover and look at those 3 filters, if you see fuzz or a heavy dusty film they are done. The Large Murata SSB filter has the caps whereas the other 3 don't. I've already replaced all 3 in my 4th personal 857D. Replacing them requires removing the main board from the chassis because they are through hole parts and not difficult to change if you have the correct soldering and desoldering tools. Just make sure the correct filter goes into the correct spot as the letters in the PN denote which it is. You will also need some heat sink compound too to remount the main board after the repair. Remove the 2 screws next to the Driver MOSFET's first then the rest, there is a heat sink block attached to the underside of the board for the MOSFET's, Don't try to remove it from the board.? You can find the Technical Supplement online to get the PN's from and get you board diagrams. 73's and Good Luck with it, Mitch N4MF |

increasing intermittent static when squelch is open.
Lately I've found my 857 to have increasing intermittent static when I'm listening to people talk on VHF. It's clear and readable when I first turn it on and then gradually the static builds up till I can't understand anything. When the radio is not receiving it is dead quiet. This also happens when I'm listening to the FM broadcast band at anywhere from 88.3 to 106.3 which are local stations. The guy at Yaesu says it's probably the IF filters and that only a professional should try to change them. "Send it in please" he says. Has anyone done any repairs like this and if so, how difficult was it? Back in the 70's I worked on airborne radios for the Air Force and although it's been awhile I still know how to solder and am building a cool little Antenna Analyser from a pcb that I got from QRPguys.com. |
Re: FT 857 Question NJ9Q
Is that on a straight FT-857? I checked mine. Menu 075 adjust power on all modes. Turning down on one mode, reduces power on other modes.

Re: CW mode outputs lower power
Ditto on the menu setting. Each mode has a power setting, I'm not sure which resets actually do reset the power levels.
Check ALC, rf back into the radio will cause similar. There are several things that can cause the radio to 'back off' the output power. Does it still have a problem into a dummy load? Tracy N4LGH |
Re: FT 857 Question NJ9Q
Put me on the list for CW Low Power.?
The radio can handle a little reflection at full power so at its lowest setting that drives your tuner should be more than safe. I've had my '857 for seems lime 15 years and I've never had a problem with this. Congrats on the radio! If you have the funds, get yourself one of the SSB filters and watch the receiver come to life ;] Tracy N4LGH |
