Re: CW filter
Thanks, John -- I'll give that a try. I have a lot to learn around AGC and gain controls still. Quentin CAUDRON, PhD On Sat, 4 Nov 2023 at 11:41, John Kirby <n3aaz_qrp_1@...> wrote: ?Suggestion for? CW and lack of or too much AGC |
Re: CW filter
Thanks, all, for the responses. Yes, this is for a FT-857D. They are hard to find ! Regarding the DSP, it performs well, but at the AF level. You can dial in the digital bandpass filter nicely, but the AGC will continue to act on things outside what you're hearing, causing flutter and cracking. Ken, I would like to take you up on that ! I'll email you separately. Thank you. Quentin CAUDRON, PhD On Sat, Nov 4, 2023, 07:03 Ken, W8EK <kenw8ek@...> wrote:

Re: CW filter
If my stolen FT-857D is parted out the 500Hz and 2300Hz Collins filters will be for sale.

You did not mention for what xcvr ???? 817/8 or 857 vs 857D? IF for the 857D AND at todays price of these filters you will be disappointed IF for CW the 857D's onboard DSP (es associated menus (tweeked)) out perform the crystal filters IF for 817/8 or 857 take a pEEk at stagger tuned external filters ?.../g/QRPLabs/message/113209... ?((/g/QRPLabs/topic/102251794#113209)) 73 73 74 John N3AAZ ps based on first hand experience with all the above |

bad connections and or bad fuse/holder will cause high current draw. I don't think so, , usually insufficient current flows, due to the extra series resistance of a bad connection . Check ohms law. A bad connection will cause high volt drop across it, perhaps that was what you were thinking.. More likely it is a leaking capacitor. or other failed component live in the RX sector. There will be a hot or warm spot to the touch wherever it is at nearly 3 amps. Check with a multi meter for lower than usual volt drop across a faulty shorted component is another indicator. 73 vk4tux |

Mike
Well first off if the radio was new and had not been messed with I would start by going back and removing the filter you installed, I assume you did not check the unit out prior to that, also while it is open check all the screws that hold the board down to insure they are tight then I would start at the power supply and connections and work my way to the radio bad connections and or bad fuse/holder will cause high current draw.
Good luck, ?Troy ke4ska? |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIf you're going to all that trouble, why don't you just buy an ATAS so you can automatically tune it?? I replaced Hustlers after 50 years on my mobile and wish I had done it sooner!? Ron Jakubowski, K2RJ? Tab? S9 |
857D pulling 2.9 amps at idle and the PLL unlocked. Help!
Hi,
Last year, I bought a used FT-857D from a gentleman. It was new in box but sat in a closet for 15 years. Today I turned it on and heard the relays switch on and off a bunch and saw the frequency readout flash (my understanding this is PLL unlock).? The radio is now pulling high current at idle. 2.9A at idle. Because of this, I am keeping it off until I get a better idea what is going on. I have the collins mechanical filter installed so I have opened it up.? Any idea what can be going on? |

Re: WANTED: Yaesu TCXO-9
This is a guess on my part as I've no interest in delving into the "how it works", but I'm pretty sure that the TXCO improves the stability of frequency generation circuits, I do know that for time sensitive modes like FT8, a TXCO for any rig is not wasted money and only improves communications/enjoyment. I have yet to put my 817/57 (a Chinese TXCO in each) on FT8, but once I get my "mobile Hustler 6BTV" installation up and running, I'll be giving it a go. A brief description of my "mobile Hustler 6BTV". I live in what you folks down south call an HOA, we call it a Strata, similar but not quite the same but in common, no visible antennas save for sat dishes. I have been eyeing up the rain gutters... Anyway, you can probably figure out what I am doing, I bought a used bike carrier that fits the 2 inch receiver on my vehicle, I cut the bike carrying part off and now left with a vertical post. The 6BTV will be mounted to this post, I got a very good deal on about 100 feet of aluminum window screen, this will be cut into a few 12 ft lengths to act as a ground plane. I'm really looking forward to operating again, I'm just not looking forward to tuning the antenna as it is getting pretty cold out of late and snow has already made an appearance. The issue with the Chinese TCXOs is that they are actually programmable PLL oscillators and have more distortion to the waveform than a single crystal would.?
This means that the RMDR or mixer noise might be higher and cause an issue under some specific conditions. Personally I have used these a good bit and I am not smart enough to figure out how they affect the signal nor how to detect the difference if I knew. The idea is that these are more stable than the original reference oscillator and they are. I have been happy with these installed in a Yaesu 857D and a Kenwood TS590SG. They are cheap enough to not lose much sleep over it and keep the old crystal if you want to put it back in. |
Re: WANTED: Yaesu TCXO-9
You can get a knock-off from Aliexpress, probably not as good as the Yaesu one but I'll bet better than the original one that came with the 857.
