Re: Keeping the 857D Screen For Long Life

I suspect stripes appear for several reasons. ?I've been baking my '857D through four car changes over the years, but have always shaded the front seat area with a windshield screen. ? The display is still normal after 12 years. ?Bought new in January, 2010.

Now I don't leave the rig in the car for extended lengths of time and the stripes have not reappeared.

It's not only heat.? I had the zebra-stripe problem appear on my 857D after a few years.? The rig has never been mobile, or even portable.? It's lived its life in an air conditioned house, and is kept covered up when not in use, so sun never shines on the screen.? In my case, Yaesu replaced the screen for only $70 - but that was several years ago.

I cut a little piece of clear plastic to cover the display screen and also generally cover the head unit with a cloth when I'm not using it.? Car gets quite hot but no problems in years.

Re: Keeping the 857D Screen For Long Life

My ft-857d was installed in my vehicle for years. It developed stripes. I then removed it from the vehicle and did some SOTA activations during a Scottish winter, with minimum temperatures of -5¡ãC. The zebra stripes disappeared. Two years later and they haven't reappeared. Yesterday I used the radio portable in 26¡ãC heat on a summit. All good!

Now, I'm not advising anyone to stick the head unit in a freezer, but I think the cold temperatures cured mine.

I do concur with both comments about display is mostly with radio which have been use in a car.

I bought mine in 2012 from a German fellow, with the guarantee that it was never use in car, as the zebra problem was already known.
10 years later, my display work wonderful !
I use the separation kit. The head is on my desk and the body well ventilated. I had a extra big fan over the chassis near the heat sink because of long cycle digital modes but since a few months I? bought an 100w amplifier so I use only 8w as out power to protect my lovely 857D radio.

Also? Are there things I should not do that will harm the use of my 857 screen?

I Could:
- Set the 857 screen at lower light intensity?

- Use a certain color which stresses the screen less or more?

- People who specialize at replacing the screen if it fails with "Zebra Stripes" or other problems?

Sure would would be nice to lengthen the life of my 857D, there are no others like it.

My understanding is that the zebra stripes issue tends to occur mostly in rigs that have at some stage been installed in cars where they have been heat affected, but perhaps I'm wrong.?

I just had my screen replaced here in VK by a guy in Melbourne who specialises is Yaesu repairs and it cost me around $250AUD.

Re: menu 59 missing RMT Option

Kent,

Well that's an entire other issue which I think I understand now but at the time I was grasping.

This all started with my rig having no TX on 14/10? MHz.? ?I've had a similar issue with my Icom 706 and the filters so I was not unfamiliar with the symptom.??
I didn't know about the relay clean feature at the time so I decided to try a "simple" reset......

the reset didn't fix the TX issue and of course has dragged me into this Menu 59 issue!!

FYI? I've tried the relay clean and that didn't fix TX so I'll be putting this on the bench soon to see if I can address that but I never thought I'd have a missing menu issue.. just seems too strange that one of three options would just disappear.

In the end? I'm still under warrantee but I just hate to part with the rig for months if I can take care of it myself.

Troy ...

Thanks for the additional info.

You're right, another reset may restore the RMT option (along with others that might be missing). ?Be sure you and the rig are at the same potential -- touch something metal before doing the reset.

By the way, what prompted the factory reset in the first place?

I'm thinking that I should try to reset yet again.
I find no other cases out there where anyone has reported this issue.

Are you first getting the "extended menu" ? Reference the steps in the mic manual ..
