squelch problems

John Tachuk

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have to put squelch up high to stop background noise.?? A strong signal can¡¯t make it through. ???I have heard of a hidden menu fix.

Re: increasing intermittent static when squelch is open.

James Clark - and others - answered your question quite well.

There are several methods to accomplish the task -? mine is the easiest - but not so pretty :)

Please look at the "Files" Section and find the folder "FT-857D AM Filter Fixes".

Download the three PDF files (October 8, 2011) from "garyposs" - that's me :)

The PDF file named "FT-857D? AM Filter Replacement" contains a full set of instructions (read carefully and understand) - with photographs - of how to replace the "static producing filter" - easily and not pretty.

The other two PDF files are for reference and familiarity with the replacement filter. Please read and understand them as well.?

Note - that 7 years later it remains working like a charm - Quietly !!!

I did have to replace the LCD Display a couple of years ago - an interesting challenge - but quite doable. Perhaps I should write an article on how to do that task. I did take stet-by-step photographs but have not written the article.

Otherwise my FT-857-D remains working quite well.

To make the filter installation even prettier - follow the suggestion by Dave Mueller with his TIFF file from February 16, 2015 in the same folder - Thanks Dave - Good Job :)? You will need to completely remove the filter assembly and pins using appropriate de-soldering tools. In addition, you will need to add SMD components on the bottom side of the transceiver circuit board which requires it's careful remove and later re-assembly.

The choice is you on how to proceed. Regardless of the method -? the results are well worth the effort !!!

Good Luck and happy Listening :)

Re: Factory loaded frequency memories.

Thanks Mitch!

It appears that the radio was untouched other than no frequency memories and menus at defaults.? From the articles I read on the Internet, the resets would clear the frequency memories and they had to be reloaded.? The term guard bands came into play so I assumed that there were factory frequencies and when it was reset, the previous owner thought he had rendered the radio useless and threw it away.? I should have realized that when I couldn't find a list that my understanding of the radio was flawed.

Re: Factory loaded frequency memories.

Hi Bill,

In the past I've seen just restoring the factory jumpers on the main board for the country of use (eg. US, EU, DE, JA, etc) to remove the MARS Mod, and a reset put them back to new, out of box condition. The usual reason for needing to program anything is when the MARS mod is in and they want the channelized 5MHz frequencies. The MARS mod clears these presets. Some radio's will have 2-3 jumpers that would need to be put back depending on the LOT Number of the radio and the mod that was done. I'm on my 4th one personally and the first 2 were the same, the third and forth ones are each different than the first 2, revision changes I suppose.

I haven't seen a list for what you are wanting, only the 5MHz stuff. I do know Yaesu has on occasion replaced the serial eeprom when sent in for repairs.

Factory loaded frequency memories.

I recently saved a FT-857 from the trash pile and found that the radio appeared to have gone through hard and soft resets.? After programming in local repeaters, the radio seems to work fine. Searches on the Internet seem to indicate that there was a set of factory installed frequencies to set the guard bands on HF.? I'd like to return the radio back to "like new" condition and wonder if there is a list posted out there of the original frequencies.

Re: Latest version of the service manual?

I used the "Contact Us" tab at Yaesu.com and requested technical help, filled in the form.? I was contacted by email and ordered the correct service manual.

Subject: [FT-857] Latest version of the service manual?

?

?

Hi!

?

I am currently thinking about "swapping" my 13 year old unit for a new one. The swap would only cost me about 150 bucks....

?

But first, I?d like to take a closer look at the changes YAESU made over the last 10 years.

?

When I fixed my unit, I stumbled across several available service manual versions. Namely:

  • EH007M90A - 2003
  • EH007M90B - 2005
  • EH007M90C - 2007
  • EH007M90D - 2009

There have been many changes in the circuits. But there should be even newer ones out there... Reasons:

?

1. In 2013, YAESU made some more changes to the PCB. They added DC blocking, as you can read here:

?

2. In 2015, YAESU abandoned the switch S01 in the main unit. Moreover - according to the following source- they made "serious changes" to the pa unit and main unit. (= in German language: "Im Laufe des Jahres 2015 (ab Mitte 2015 ca.) sind die Ger?te gravierend ver?ndert worden ab Werk.)

?

Unfortunately, the most recent service manual I found is the one released in 2008/2009. (EH007M90D)

?

Does anybody have a newer version? Please upload it or contact me! Or is it illegal to share the service manuals? If so, please let me know, where I can buy a recent version.

?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Stefan

Re: Using Rigblaster Advantage

David, as another MARS member, the only times that I have encountered this using a SignaLink is when the speed of transmission is too high for band conditions. Try reducing your transmission speed one or two settings.

Re: FT 857 Question NJ9Q

Is there a low power "Tune" function.

There is a workaround for that. My LDG YT-100 uses the AM mode as low power. Another low power function is on the DC in the power socket, ground the brown wire, then all modes will go low power. The DC cable option is useful for a battery lead, then using another lead for mains supply without the brown wire grounded for mains power supply lead. This achieves auto QRP for portable battery use.

I agree that it sounds like a filter issue.
?
About five years ago (give or take a couple of years?) a guy on this
list came up with a very clever and simple way of replacing the
filters without removing the main board. He posted photographs of the
repair.
?
Have a careful look through the "Files" section of the Yahoo home for
this list he may have posted the method there. If that fails you can
search the archives but that will not be an easy task.
?
Perhaps someone else can provide better pointers?

Cool. Thank you very much. I spent a large quantity of my spare cash on buying it a couple of years ago and since then things have gone downhill a bit with my finances. I really didn't want to spend the money to have them look at it and fix a known problem for a whole bunch of money that I don't have.
Thanks

He is most probably correct, the IF filters. CF1005 typically gets changed for SSB/CW issues but CF1002 and CF1003 for FM do not and they suffer the same damage as CF1005 does from having voltage applied to the input and output pins of the filter. They are supposed to have 0.01uf voltage blocking / coupling caps on the in and out pins. The applied voltage cooks the filter from the inside out. If you remove the cover and look at those 3 filters, if you see fuzz or a heavy dusty film they are done. The Large Murata SSB filter has the caps whereas the other 3 don't. I've already replaced all 3 in my 4th personal 857D.

Replacing them requires removing the main board from the chassis because they are through hole parts and not difficult to change if you have the correct soldering and desoldering tools. Just make sure the correct filter goes into the correct spot as the letters in the PN denote which it is. You will also need some heat sink compound too to remount the main board after the repair. Remove the 2 screws next to the Driver MOSFET's first then the rest, there is a heat sink block attached to the underside of the board for the MOSFET's, Don't try to remove it from the board.?

You can find the Technical Supplement online to get the PN's from and get you board diagrams.
