I ran mine in my truck in Florida for over 10 years before I started seeing the zebra lines. In the summer, the inside temps in the truck could easily reach 120 degrees.

Re: Install in 2019 Subaru Forester

I mounted my Hf antenna on the trailer hitch with an extension so the hatch would clear (2016 Outback). I only put it on when I¡¯m going to use the HF side. The u/vhf is a lip mount on the side of the hatch. Otherwise it would require some custom welding to bring it out to the side so that the hatch would clear.

ON my 2017 Forester I have an ATAS-120 on the rear tailgate lip mount.? But my gate is not power.? ?I have my VHF/UHF antenna?on a clamp mount on the roof rail.? That? may work for your screwdriver?as well? This picture shows a cable plugged in, going to?a beam,? but normally its a dual band VHF/UHF.? Hi Bruce,

?

I replaced one in one of my 857s a couple of years ago, Wasn¡¯t too difficult.

?

I obtained mine form a local supplier here in Australia.

I still have another spare for when my other one eventually needs replacing.

Re: FT857D Replacement Panel Screen

I received one yesterday but I only got it for a spare, there are videos on YouTube on how to fit it, its easy but you need to unsolder 1, 4 pin socket at one end of the board and re-solder it to the new board.

Re: Anybody have experience installing in a Prius ?

I have 3 radios in 2017 Prius Prime.. There's an article about me installing FT-857 and ATAS 120 in the Aug 2017 edition of CQ with some pictures. ?More pictures on my QRZ page. ?I custom made mounts from roofing brackets for the dual band antennas. ?A friend replaced the bracket on the left side with something sturdier to handle the ATAS at highway speeds... ?

Originally I was not going to run HF in the Prius thinking it was an electrical noise nightmare... ?I was shocked an no engine noise on HF without any bonding or beads, etc... ?First QSO was at 20w voice to Italy on 20 meters from NC while traveling at 40 mph with the engine running and no noise! .. ?That's when I had a friend build a stronger mount for the ATAS.. ?No holes drilled in my vehicle.for the antenna mounts. ? I now have three in the tailgate area......

?I finally had somebody install 6 gauge from the 12v battery up front to distribution box under the passenger seat so I could stop using the cigarette lighter for power.... ?they might have had to drill one hole in the firewall for the power leads.

Drop me an email kt4v@...?if you'd like to take this discussion offline...

Re: Brown wire documentation ??

Note that the battery sense wire is reacted to in real-time, not just at power-on. I have mine grounded through a SPST button. I normally run low power but switch to high when conditions warrant. Also useful for tuning. This causes a power reduction in all bands, not just HF.

With default settings, the display will go off after 3 seconds when battery sense is grounded. This feature can be disabled via Menu 044 DISP MODE.

Re: Brown wire documentation ??

Edited

I put a small push button?switch inline on mine, grounded to radio,?for when I go sit by a lake or something and use a small lawn mower battery, saves messing around in the menu to lower power,

Re: Brown wire documentation ??

The brown wire, when grounded, makes the radio TX give 20-watt power reduced from 100 watts.

If you have two power leads then the magic can work. The mains power supply lead gives 100 watts, brown wire not connected. The portable power lead grounds the brown wire and gives lower power and longer battery time. You have to put the ground link into the Molex plug on the line to the brown wire yourself. This is of course optional.

Re: Brown wire documentation ??

The brown wire is a carry over from the FT897. In the 897 it is grounded when an internal battery is used. For 857 it is just there since both boxes use the same mother board.

If you ground the brown wire maximum RF is reduced to 20W to help preserve battery life.

Vaclav,

The brown wire changes the 857 from High Power to a low power state. I do not remember where it is in the manual and I have since sold mine due to high RF noise in the Diesel Pickup.
