Re: Mobil HF Mount?

Mel Farrer

I have seen the HI-Q mounted on the front side of the bed.? On my GMC, there was enough room on the front of the tool box to allow me to mount a 1/2" thick x 5 " wide X 2-1/2' tall aluminum plate.? I then mounted the base there at the top so the coil was well above the cab.? Yes, I had to put a brace to the opposite side of the bed.?Yes, I ran a ground strap to the frame.

Ft-857 and Winlink/VARA HF Question

Dennis Yard

Friends,

Here in San Diego, our ARES group has made leaps forward in the expanded use of Winlink for EmComm.

As a part of that, I am expanding my skillset from basic Winmor to VARA. ? ? I have gotten VARA FM to play on my FT-857 and Signalink rig and now want to use VARA HF on the same rig.? This rig is set up and works fine on Winmor HF.?

I have had only minor success in making compete connections with VARA FM. ? Today I had a complete connection, but its fairly rare that it works out without? repeat tries.

One of my colleagues suggested the following: ? "VARA HF tip: make sure that your receiver passband filter is at least 2.8 kHz. If your receiver defaults to 2.4 kHz, you can't sustain a VARA connection because VARA reaches into the corners of the envelope."

Can anyone advise me of where to find, if there is one, a menu item to see what the RX BPF value is on the FT-857?? And is It adjustable?

Cheers,

Dennis Yard

Re: No turn on

Hello All,

Tim Moes of Midwest Technical Services has repaired my 857 for $220 and change.? Bad interconnect cable, two diodes, and a FET.? He did find a small amount of corrosion on the PCB and repaired that too.? Considerably less than the quote from Y for $871.? Good service.

Hi Jim:

14.2v at the battery when at idle.

Re: FT-857D Randomly powering on/off

Hi Robert:

?Finally got a nice sunny day and checked the fuses and they seem to be in good shape with no burns or trace marks. That being said I will keep that on my things to check list. Since the original instance, my problem has not repeated itself, but that being said anything is possible at any time.

I never turn the radio on prior to starting the car, and in my case I let the cabin temp come up to a comfortable temp before turning on the radio, ie around 15C and never turn the radio on when the cabin temp is below zero.

Also checked the Molex connector at the radio and all is good and re-seated the connector to be on the safe side.

Tnx for your assistance Bob

Re: FT-857D sounding slightly distorted on FM but HF OK

Hi Gary,

It's been a little while but if memory serves me I used Chem-Wick with a regular TC iron for the Main I/O pins and then the same wick with a Weller D8200 for the ground pins. I did have to reheat one or 2 pins while pulling at it to get them out though. I then wicked the holes clear from both sides and reinstalled. Whichever works for what you have for equipment.

Hi Fred,

?

that is normal operation.

?

If the radio is switched on when power is removed, then, when power is restored it will come back on. If the radio was switched off then it will stay switched off when power is restored.

?

I have a relay device in my cars which supplies power to the radios 10 seconds after the car is started and then removes it 10 minutes after I switch the car off. Prevents flat batteries but allows me to complete a QSO before I get out of the car without having to keep the ignition on. The radio automatically comes on when the power is applied by the relay.

Re: FT-857D sounding slightly distorted on FM but HF OK

Mitch,

When you removed the two filters did you find it necessary to somehow crush the filter to break it apart so the soldered pins would come out easier and keep the board from being damaged?

I've tried as much a 400 degrees on the ground contacts and they are not melting the solder.? Just wondering what method you used to removed these filters.

Hi Gary,

Actually no i did not do the blocking caps, neither did Yaesu when they replaced CF1005. Something I plan to do in the short term, just wanted to get the rig back working correctly.

Re: FT-857D Randomly powering on/off

Hi Mike and Jim

If you are using blade fuses this can be a problem. Some of the fuse holders only have a very narrow point of contact and will leave a black burn mark across them, clean them up and they go ok for some time. Particularly happened on my IC-7000.

Back to my earlier suggestion of the problem I had with the display not being on after starting the car. The display was blank and I had audio on HF as I like to know the signal is there while driving, audio indicator. I could also turn the radio by using the on/off button and then turn it on again and the display work ok till the next start. It usually takes months before the fault occurs gain if I reseat the remote connector on the back of the control head. I have operated this radio in this configuration mostly for 10 years in 2 different vehicles. This fault happened infrequently since replacing the display board about 2 years ago.

Maybe it is time to take the radio out from under the seat and re-do all the connects.

Good luck hope you find your problem.

Bet Regards Bob

"Molex" ?

I think that the connectors used on these radios is "Molex-Style" and not a genuine part (I could be wrong there) However, Molex connectors are designed for situations where the are plugged in, and rarely disconnected, and they don't withstand regular plugging and unplugging.? I first came across them many years ago as the output connectors on high-current DC rack-mounted power supplies which are usually only unplugged if the supply goes faulty.

The cable to my 857 is never disconnected,? as I have Power-Poles as standard on all my 12v gear, and a Power-pole does the plugging and unpluggin when I move my radios between the car and the shack.

Hi Mike,

Although I cleaned off the pins, the problem continued intermittently.

But it was then that I also noted that the voltage indicated on the front panel display was occasionally dropping below 11 volts or so; when the voltage dropped like that, the rig shut off. Although the power supply output appeared to be stable, I switched it out anyway, but had the same irritating intermittent failure.

I looked more closely at the Molex plug on the power cord and noticed that its color had darkened slightly. changed out the Molex plug in favor of a more robust plug, and the voltage no longer varied.

The bottom line was that the pin connection had developed enough resistance that it caused an intermittent voltage drop.

I have never used a Hall effect unit in any of my radio installations, but if the Hall unit is disconnecting the ground lead from the battery, all the current would travel through the coaxial cable or the main radio chassis ground if the chassis was indeed grounded. Not a good practice if there is a ground main wire fault condition.

Re: FT-857D Randomly powering on/off

Hi Fred:

Not sure what you are getting at.

If you are thinking that the radio had no power to prior to radio turning itself on, and once it was given power it turned itself on. Fine, but then why would it turn itself off, and then start the cycle again of on and off for approx 5 minutes, and stayed off until I turned it one a few minutes later. And during the rest of the trip the radio performed perfectly. The radio is always manually turned off when I shut the vehicle down, and as a fail-safe the radio will turn itself off after 1hr from a menu setting.

Also the other device that is in the circuit had power soon as I turned it on, the APRS rig had power full time so that part of the equation doesn't fit. I don't turn the 857 on until the head has reached the cabin temp both in winter and summer.
