Re: Hoping for help with an FT-897 (very similar)
Leonard,
I was able to work a POTA station today on 20m and sounded pretty good according to him. I worked my dad on 40m last night and he reported that I sounded fine as well. My guess is that the previous owner had tweaked the settings some way for this mic that let him run at higher gain settings. I could be wrong. My SWR is good across 20m and I typically run an LDZ z-100a tuner. It seems like your gain settings got me back on the air. Thanks Leonard. Names David, by the way. KI5SHY. I hope to hear you some time. Thanks for all your help and 73, David Wisby (KI5SHY) |

So I used the gain settings that you mentioned and to me 20m still sounded a bit rough. But I worked my dad on 40m and he said it sounded great. Got a 5/6 from the 40m Route66 station in Oklahoma, too.
That makes me wonder if i have an RF issue on 20m or something that I hadn't thought about. |
Re: Hoping for help with an FT-897 (very similar)
Cleaned out the mic connection with canned air, and opened up the mic to do the same. No change. However, I did use the gain settings I got? from Leonard and had a QSO with my dad on 40m. No problems.
That makes me wonder if I'm chasing some kind of RF problem on 20m. |
Re: Hoping for help with an FT-897 (very similar)
Hey Leonard,
I went in and changed the gain settings to your recommendations and am still getting the distortion, albeit not as bad. Would an LDG meter with ALC on it tell me anything useful? I'm still pretty new at this. I've only been on HF since May. |
Re: Hoping for help with an FT-897 (very similar)
I would as suggested set the mic gain. Make sure that any compression or DSP is turned offf first. Set compression after you are happy with the gain.
Does your mic have a switch on the back of it? Where this si set can make a difference as well depending on your voice. -- Compton VK2HRX Sydney, Australia |
Re: Hoping for help with an FT-897 (very similar)
Listening on the SDR as you did is probably the best way to set the gain. Then you know exactly how much gain you can run before it distorts. My gains may be slightly lower as I have a Tanker voice from years in the Army. Having a loud voice does help reduce the background noise though. ;)

That’s what I’m saying. I don’t know how to get it back like it was. I’ll try your gain settings and go from there. |
Re: Hoping for help with an FT-897 (very similar)
I'm actually surprised you got good audio reports at 50-75 before with the MH-59. Everyone I ever seen needed the gain turned down.

Re: Hoping for help with an FT-897 (very similar)
I might be able to get in touch with the guy. I got good signal reports on my Nelson 9:1, and would get reports of being overdriven but legible on my Wolf River Coil. However, after I did the factory reset I got a signal report of "wall of static" from W8FNG. I've worked that guy 4 or 5 times and always had good reports.

开云体育Can you locate the guy who used your radio on Field Day?? I would quiery him.? Did you change any settings?? Did anyone tell you the audio was messed up? etc etc Mike -------- Original message -------- From: dwisby1@... That's what makes me think something is wonky. Am I way off base here? |

Re: Hoping for help with an FT-897 (very similar)
MH59 is a very hot mic. You need to turn down the mic gain settings. Also since you did a master reset you need to make sure that Menu 59 is set for rmt.

开云体育Are you using the stock hand mic that came with the radio? MH-31? The one with the "TONE" switch on the back? I had a very similar problem a few months ago and I found a bad solder joint on one of the switch connections.? Refloated all the solder joints, and everything in the universe was right again. I know this isn’t technically the correct place to post this, but I was hoping that given the similarities between the FT-857 and FT-897.? I’m having an issue with transmit audio that I’m hoping ya’ll can help with. Info dump to follow: A few months ago I did a parks on the air activation with my FT-897d and a wolf river coil antenna. Everything went great but I got a couple of mentions of slightly distorted audio. I have never gotten any complaints on my wire, so I chalked it up to my antenna and moved on.? Fast forward to this week, while on vacation in Florida I got the same mention from two different operators so I had to do something about it. In talking things over with my dad, we figured out that when another operator was using my radio on field day he may have changed a setting somewhere that could be causing the distortion. In order to rectify this, I performed a master reset on the radio thinking I could just tweak my settings to get back to where I had it before. After performing the reset, I have been told that it sounds like a wall of static when I transmit. I have verified this with a WebSDR. I was able to get the signal to where it was intelligible by dropping the gain to 10%, but of course no one can hear me. I have been able to get it to “act right” here and there, but it inevitably starts blasting out static within a minute or so. Is there something damaged somewhere? Or is there some setting that I can’t find.? Any help at all would be much appreciated.? |
