?Dear all,

I recently bought an used 857D that does not tx in AM mode. This is not really a big deal for me as I usually do not need this mode. On the other hand I am curious finding the cause and maybe fix it. While pressing the PTT the trx goes in tx, the relais is clicking and the red light is on, but there is no output power. Any ideas?

Check your menu go to RF power while in AM and check and see where it is set. ?Should be set to 100. ?

Try call Yaesu directly. That is the route I went when both mine had zebra strips and Yaesu was cheaper than the third party places.

Does not include the case, knobs, dials, etc...which you do not need to replace. I think there is a 4-pin connector that will need to be de and re-soldered - other than than it is a drop-in replacement.

Thats about where I went.. 645. F which is just a little less. I just saw a little at the edges of the solder..?
Have you tried it Howard??

OK - video to follow showing the re-flow - nothing to loose here as my display is very bad - if this is a fail I will buy a new assembly before they disappear! Fingers all crossed - safety gear on!

Brad - how hot did you go with the air? I went up to 350C and didn't really get visible flow - trying to be careful not to cook the board!

Also, if that doesn't do it.. you may try the fingers that attach to the LCD and last resort, hit the Display driver IC with a -little-heat..?
Also I read somewhere that that lens? is directional.. FYI, crossing my fingers.!

Howard , You can clearly see where to reflow with that picture.. where the flex attaches to the pcb.? ?Yours looks a little like mine did.. so hopefully it's good news.?

Re: Need help - fuses / power issue

The theory and practice often miss.
And most of the theory / rules are more legal issues then technical issues.
The "what if..." legal speculations prevail? instead of real technical reasoning.

Let's assume that the rig is using full power , say 20 A for FULL hour.
Unrealistic , but close to "prolonged" use in my book.
( you supply you own definition of "prolonged use "? )
That is 20 A !
I am not an expert on wire / gauge RECOMMENDED size, but from practical point of view
the connections? in supply and the wire will GET warm due to various real and unwanted ( fuse holder etc. ) resistance.
Now for "fire protection" - give me a realistic example of DIRECT and solid short ANYWHERE along the supply line which will blow a fuse rated to carry 20 A for prolonged period of NORMAL? use and provide "fire protection " same time .
My uneducated? guess would be 25A.

But back to the OP - the real issue was / is - the fuse holder / fuses are? NOT capable of carrying the normal usage current without introducing excessive losses? / resistance into the power supply line.
( Going from roughly? 13 V to close to 10 V is in my book excessive even without using Mr Ohm's law. )?

In other words - the fire hazard is being created and no rules are being broken.
So much for technology and legalese,

.

You actually have to deconstruct a bit further. on the picture on the right there is a black paper tab in the middle that is stuck to the bottom of the board.. Carefully peel that back.. from the back side of the board and then you can switng up the display.. Note there are 2 white tabs that have to be slid out of the pcb to accomdate that. Once they are out.. the whole lcd can be hinged up. The flex board with the ASIC on it iis exposed and the connection to the LCD with this flex.?
Once you see that, you can see where this flex connects to the PCB. That's where I reflowed.?

The picture shows the black paper that has the tab in the center.? ?Be careful with the display at this point.. as the filter with flop around.. Still not complicated. but it may sound it.?

That's awesome. When I heard the 857 was officially discontinued, I bought another control head because mine started having the stripes. I'm going to try this on the bad one to see if it clears it up. Not a bad idea to have a spare.

Do you have any pics of where you reflowed the solder?

Thanks for sharing this.

Well I've had my 857D for about 9 years and finally took it apart to see if I could fix the zebra stripes.?

It took a little patience taking it apart but not too bad.?

There is an ASIC display driver on a polyimid flex that connects to the circuit board. By re-flowing the connections on the flex to the circuit board All the stripes were gone.?
I used a hot air rework tool that I had bought on Amazon and did left side contacts then right so the flex would not pop all the connections off.?

Hopefully it will retain for another 9 years. Not sure why this happens.. perhaps a bad type of solder???

This was a fairly easy fix so thought I would share.? Perhaps everyone has already done this.?

Re: Need help - fuses / power issue

Hi All

Here in the UK we used to fuse both positve and negative supply lines in accordance with the radio manufactureres instructions.? As a vehicle electrician I never liked that idea because it leaves a floating live end if the negative is breached.? However, there is now new thinking and a UK code of practice to back it up.

You will note the following from that document
4.6.3. Fusing.?? "The power supply cable should only be fused in the positive power line with the fuse located as close aspossible to the battery or power source."
4.6.4. continues to state that the Negative line must NOT be fused and then gives sugestions as to how it should be connected.

It is a UK document but one that may have some merit.? The wiring suggested solves the problem of high curent draw through the radio in the case of a failed main earth cable from the vehicle battery to the chassis.
