Bruce, haven't tried AM personally though one thought comes to mind for that mode.? Good AM signal needs 6 KHz band width, and don't know that the 857 will do that.? These rigs are designed for SSB/Cw with other modes as an afterthought.? Just thinking, perhaps others with some practical experience will prove me wrong.? Regards, Phil / K4PO
