Chainplate removal

Hello: I got some good advice on addressing a leaking daggerboard-downhaul, sheave plate (thanks to all who responded) so I am hoping I could get the same re chainplates.

I want to remove and replace the chainplates on Mindbender.? I was going to replace them with carbon fibre chainplates but time being of the essence I am going to just replace with stainless steel; also, the chainplate bulkhead seems to be glass fibre over core rather than carbon fibre which may present an issue.

1. For the shroud plates, apart from removing the bolts, is there anything I should know about removing the plates?? Mine seem to be daubed with epoxy that I assume will crack away once I get the bolts out and that I will be able to work the plates out.
2. For the forestay chainplate, is there any advice about this? Do people typically replace this chainplate? I just see four horizontal bolt heads and assume that the nuts on the other side are captive so maybe I can back the bolts out.
3. Did Ian develop a carbon fibre solution for replacement of the forestay chainplate does anyone have the design that they would be willing to post to the site?

Thanks

Nick

Hi Nick. I will share ideas with you here. But understand my opinions are coming as an F39 builder, and I have not yet touched the chainplates on the F25c that Anton and I will be restoring in California. Please see caps inline below.?

THIS IS A GOOD THING. IAN SPEC’D GLASS TO BOND CARBON CHAINPLATES TO THE BULKHEADS. GLASS HAS MORE TENSILE STRENGTH AND IS BETTER FOR ABSORBING THE SHOCKS THE PLATES TAKE.?

YOU DON’T WANT TO DAMAGE THE BULKHEAD IN ANY WAY. THAT GLUE JOINT SHOULD BE SLICED AWAY. THIS IS A JOB FOR A FINE BLADE ON THE OSCILLATION MULTITOOL OR SAWZALL
2. For the forestay chainplate, is there any advice about this? Do people typically replace this chainplate? LOOK FOR ANY TINY CRACKS. IF THERE IS CORROSION, I’D GET AN OPINION FROM A SS SPECIALIST. COLIGO WILL MAKE YOU NEW ONES IN SS OR TITANIUM AT A FAIR PRICE.?
3. Did Ian develop a carbon fibre solution for replacement of the forestay chainplate does anyone have the design that they would be willing to post to the site? BUILDING THESE REQUIRES EXPERIENCE IN CARBON FABRICATION. ITS NOT TERRIBLY COMPLICATED BUT STEPS MUST BE CAREFULLY FOLLOWED. I HAVE THE F39 PLATES PLANS AND ONE COULD EXTRAPOLATE DOWN FROM THERE. BETTER WOULD BE TO GET THE FABRIC SPECS FROM F85 PLANS. IN RESPECT OF THE QUAGMIRE THAT IAN LEFT BEHIND RE: HIS PLANS, I DONT THINK WE SHOULD BE POSTING TO A SITE, BUT HELPING EACH OTHER OUT ON A REASONABLE CASE BY CASE BASIS FEELS RIGHT.?

Thanks

Hi Nick,
I replaced my forestay with a new stainless weldment (no pics…sorry) and moved it as far forward in the bow as possible….following Smyth’s example of “move it forward for better balance”. He just added a spectra strap around the bow pole base to address this on what was his boat.

Thanks Mark: Hope all goes well with you.? My concern with the bow chainplate is that if I take if off I may not get it on; however, the spectra (or dyneema I assume) strap idea is a good one that I will think about. I might even just back up the existing bow chain plate with a strap.? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the comprehensive information Greg

When building F85SR floats, plans called for ama chainplate bulkhead to be fiberglass over core (i.e. no carbon) but you could of course build using carbon or even add some carbon for extra assurance.?

William, what’s the job of that light green line and padeye behind the “soft forestay”? Is that the point to tack down the jib? Thanks

Greg / Ravenswing

Thanks for the photo of Randy's forestay chainplate solution. I would have to get rid of the anchor roller so if I did this it would be a job for the future.

Nick

Thanks James
