William and Annie UNDERWOOD
5
On the 1921 census, my great grand parents are listed as follows William UNDERWOOD, 68y 5m, b. Welton, Yorkshire, gateman for N.E. Railway- place of work Preston Gates & Annie UNDERWOOD, wife, 67y 2m, b. Luddington, Yorkshire, gatewoman for N.E. Railway- place of work Salt End. Annie's maiden name is COWLING. What I am wondering is what a gateman and gatewoman would do. Was it common for a married couple to do this? Thanks for any insight. Sharon Crowley Cheyenne, Wyoming

Battle of Boyne - 1690 - Soldiers
HISTORY - William III decided to invade in April 1688. William was asked to deliver England from the tyranny of James II. His Protestant Army set sail on 20 Oct 1688, weather forced him back until November 1st. About 600 vessels reached Dover on Nov. 3rd. On Nov 5th William landed at Brixham, Devon. On Nov 9th William entered Exeter. On Nov 21st William struck out eastward from Exeter. On 23rd James withdrew to negotiate with William. On Dec 22nd James escaped. William ordered free elections in June 1689. William & Mary were offered th throne. In the spring of 1689 James landed in Ireland. The siege of Londonderry followed. In June 1690 William set sail for Ireland. William landed at Carrtickfergus and then traveled to the River BOYNE to battle James II. On that day in July 1690 two great armies met. James was defeated and fled to Kinsale, 1500 men were killed. The Battle of Boyne established the throne for William, Prince of Orange. It was John Shepherd, Thomas Shepherd’s father that was the English soldier who went to Ireland to fight in the Battle of Boyne. The list of commissioned offiicers in the 6th Regiment of Mioitia, 7th Company Souhegan West included: John Shepherd, Capt. and Joseph Shepherd, Prime Lieutenant. CONJECTURE: Thomas’ father was John Shepherd of Holderness, Yorkshire, England, who went to Ireland to War in Prince William’s Army and fought in the Battle of Boynes (in 1690), married Eleanor Glass while there, and came to US( New Hampshire) from Ireland about 1690. However, his 3 or 4 sons/brothers are said to have emigrated from Holderness, Yorkshire, Engalnd to New Hampshire as well. However, if the above is true, it is more likely they sons and were born in the USA after the couple arrived here. FACTS & INFORMATION: NOTE: To have been a soldier at the Battle of Boyne in 1690, he would have probably been born sometime after 1625 and before 1672. Ltr to Edgar M. Howard, Sr. in 1971, from Linda Cooper- "Do you know anything about a Capt. John Sheperd who came over from Ireland but was not of Irish descent?” QUESTION: From the information presented above, is it reasonable to conclude that this Capt. John Shepherd that fought in the Battle of Boyne in 1690 could have been the Capt. John Shepherd who sailed from Ireland to the American Colonies (New Hampshire)?

MAGSON/MEGSON and OUTHWAITE/OUTHERD variants: Seamer, Irton, Scarborough and area.
Hi! I’ve finally made some breakthroughs with my Outhet and Megson ancestors, but am trying to solve a few further puzzles, due to the high levels of illegitimacy in the family, and also problems with multiple spellings and also mistranscriptions on the digital genealogy sites. There are two sisters: Ellen OUTHWAITE/OUTHET (or variants), b. circa 1802, m. Thomas JACKSON, Scarborough 17/02/1843 (as his third wife), having already had several children, probably by William BRAVEN(D)ER, in Irton. She had one legitimate daughter, Hannah JACKSON (later Mrs KIDSON). Widowed in 1862, Ellen died at Church Street, Whitby, on 03/09/1868, probably while staying with her daughter Jane (commonlaw wife, later legal wife of William LEE), and was buried with her husband in Dean Road Cemetery, Scarborough. Her ex-partner, William BRAVENER, Is buried with his second wife in Hutton Buscel. Mary OUTHWAITE/OUTHET (or variants), b. circa 1809, m. William DUNN, Scarborough 17/10/ 1834. She died in 1864, he in 1895. They had several children. Their mother was Mary OUTHWAITE/OUTHET (or variants) ( c. 1770-1856), who m. Thomas MEGSON (c. 1750-1838), Seamer, 03/04/1817, after the death of his first wife Eleanor UMPLEBY, née FLETCHER. My suspicion is that Thomas is their biological father. Ellen’s children sometimes use MEGSON/MAGSON as a surname, and Ellen registered Thomas’s death. However, I can’t find the births/baptisms of either of the sisters recorded, or work out how Mary snr. connects to the wider OUTHET/OUTHWAITE/OUTHERD family network in Seamer and Brompton by Sawdon. In the 1841 Census for Owen’s Yard, Scarborough, Mary MEXON (sic), aged 70, is a near neighbour of her daughter Mary DUNN and family, and has Ellen’s daughters living with her: Jane MEXON (sic), 9 (later Mrs LEE) Mary OATHWAITE (sic) 14 (Mary Ann, later Mrs NICHOLS – my great-great-grandmother. I have a baptismal record for her, 08/10/1826, Seamer) Ellen OATHWAITE (sic) 6 (not sure if this is an error for Ada, later Mrs BAILEY, but she would have been 3). I’m also not sure if Ellen and Mary had other siblings. In the 1851 Census, 89 William Street, Scarborough, the widowed Mary MAGSON (sic), aged 81, has 3 grandchildren staying with her: John HOWTHWAITE (sic), aged 33, farmer Jane HOWTHWAITE (sic), aged 18, servant (was recorded as MEXON in 1841 Census). John DUNN, aged 20, farmer Jane is Ellen’s daughter (though again, I can’t find a record of birth), and John DUNN is Mary jnr’s, but am not sure if the 33-yr-old John HOWTHWAITE (born c. 1818) is an older child of Ellen or possibly the child of another sibling not so far accounted for. A further complication is that Thomas Jackson’s sister Elizabeth married a different, younger Thomas MEGSON/MAGSON. I’m not sure if Lavinia MAGSON, who witnesses the marriage of Ellen’s daughter Mary Ann to Caiaphas NICHOLS in Scarborough in 1845, is their daughter (again, I can find no record of Lavinia’s birth). Lavinia m. James SMITH in Scarborough 07/05/1849, and later moved to Chester, where she d. in 1900: her husband was gardener and bailiff at Chester Asylum. Any advice would be useful! Sadly, I can’t find any Bastardy Bonds for these parishes. Best wishes, Marianne
