Thanks Murray for the information on gatekeepers. You mentioned a William UNDERWOOD whose mother's maiden name was HAIRSINE.? I do not have that surname in my database.?

Thank you for the information on gate keepers. It makes sense now.? In 1881 William UNDERWOOD,? age 28 is a farm labourer.? In 1891 he is 38 and is a platelayer for NE Railway.??In 1901 he is 48 and is a platelayer.?

His son, George UNDERWOOD (my grandfather) age 21 was a platelayer for the railway in 1901.?

I originally thought gate keepers had to do with the canals. Now I know my great grand father stayed with the railway.
