MARY MARCHANT
A friend and I both have Ancestors called MARY MARCHANT. Mine is from Suffolk and is the daughter of Richard Merchant & Dinah Bloss ( 1728-1792) who married John Wilkins as noted in the will of Dinah Chaplin (2nd Husband). We are looking for MAry Marchant (1749-1842) who married Thomas Langford in Hampshire, but they were both buried in Hunstanton Norfolk. It is possible that she came from Norfolk, not Suffolk. Thanks for any help. Peter Merchant If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it? - Albert Einstein

Two baptisms - same person?
I wonder if someone could cast their beady eye on two baptisms for me please, both for a Daniel Smith Drake in the Parish Church of Attleborough. I ask as one is baptised 9 December 1832 [page 139, image 73] by Fairfax Francklin, Rector, the abode listed as Windham [I believe that is a short version of Wymondham, but happy to be corrected]. The second is baptised on 22 June 1834 [page 153 on image 80], and again by Rector Fairfax Francklin but the abode now Attleborough. There are another two similar records, which I suspect are the bishops transcripts The only burial I can find for a Daniel Smith between 1832 - 1835 is for an 8 year old boy from Brideswell Street on 18 August 1833 at the parish church of Wymondham. Is it possible that the same child was baptised twice? and if so, why???

[Norfolk] [East-Anglia-Genealogy] NAILER/NAYLOR in Norfolk 2
Hello Jim, My NAYLOR/NAYLERs were in North Lincolnshire during the early 1600s and later spread out to Yorkshire (Humberside), Nottinghamshire, and Norfolk. Honor doesn't appear to be related to my bunch -- there are a few different Y-haplogroups of Naylors with no connection between them except for sharing the surname. I suppose nailing was a common occupation when surnames were originated! However, checking FreeREG shows an Honor NAYLOR being baptised at Flitcham, St Mary, on 30 Mar 1777. A daughter of John & Ann. Checking further shows John NAILER marrying Ann THOMPSON on 24 Jan 1765 at Flitcham, St Mary, by licence -- no further details shown on register page (viewed at Ancestry). Perhaps something to work from. Cheers! -- Dave On 2023-08-03 3:10 p.m., Jim Fisher wrote: -- Dave Naylor, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada ---

BETTS in Norfolk 2
Hello folks, Mention of the surname BETTS in Norfolk caused me to awake from a long slumber... My maternal grandmother was Alice Soons BETTS (1865-1937 Norwich) who married Albert SPILLING (1863-1940) in 1886. I have only managed to trace her ancestry back a couple of generations to a James BETTS (1774-1852) and an unknown wife. And then there's reference to his parents as another James BETTS and Ann. All of these being in Norwich. I've found researching BETTS from afar via available online records extremely difficult because the surname seems so common in Norfolk in that era. There is a family story that one of our BETTS relatives served on the ship Trafalgar with Nelson, but I've searched the available surviving crew lists and haven't found any relatives. Sadly, DNA testing hasn't provided me with any identifiable matches via my BETTS ancestry. Most of my maternal DNA matches trace back through my SPILLING ancestry -- BLYTH, GOWEN/GOWING, RHODES. Cheers! -- Dave -- Dave Naylor, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada ---

My names: DIXON, SMITH, REVELL, CHAPMAN, STARLING, JARROLD with a few alternate spellings 2
Hi fellow family history researchers, my Smith/Dixon family migrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1850 from Thelnetham, Suffolk. Their families seem to have come largely from where Suffolk meets Cambridgeshire although a few others seem to be very near Norfolk. The villages/towns that come up include Cowlinge, Stradishall and Hepworth in Suffolk and Cheveley, Ashley cum Silverley. Does anyone share these names? or places? Thanks.

Thomas Woolnough (d. South Elmham All Saints & St Nicholas 1800)
Dear listers, Happy New Year! Some 590 trees on Ancestry.com indicate that the Thomas Woolnough who married Hannah Fiske at South Elmham All Saints & St Nicholas on 8 October 1751 was the son of William Woolnough and Mary Branch, baptised in the same parish on 19 February 1727. The problem with this identification is that this Thomas died soon afterwards, and was buried there on 28 February 1727. We must therefore look elsewhere for Hannah Fiske's husband. He was reportedly 87 when he died, which suggests a DoB c. 1722/23. The only candidate I have found was baptised at Campsea Ashe on 3 March 1722, son of Robert Woolnough and Elizabeth Woodward. Campsea Ashe isn't exactly next door to the South Elmhams, but I have no other suggestion at present. Can anyone else cast any light? Best wishes, Rod Lyall

Intro 5
Hey there, How's everybody doing in these uncertain times? Just thought I'd introduce myself and say hi. I've been researching my family history for about 15 years, and I've found a lot of connections in Norfolk, mostly from my mum's family. My grandma's family, the Garwoods, seem to have been landowners in areas around Thurlton, Norton Subcourse, Raveningham, and possibly Haddiscoe - although something clearly went badly wrong in the late 1800s. My grandad's family, the Terringtons, came from around the areas of Stanhoe, Gaton, and possibly Northwold. At the moment my priority lies with the Garwoods - I still have a whole chain of unsolved mysteries in that family that could likely turn into quite a dramatic story, not to mention loose connections that need joining up. Though I'll probably have to wait until more documents are transcribed online to research that - I am totally blind so I couldn't get to any of the archives or indeed read their original material. Anyway, look forward to reading whatever you guys are working on. My skills might be limited but I'll certainly help out where I can. Cheers.

GALLY / GALLEY of Kirtling, Cambs and Halstead, Essex
I have a copy of the will of Richard GALLY of Catlidge (Kirtling) dated 1742. In this will, he directs his burial to take place in the Parish churchyard @ Halstead, Essex close to his late wife and child. His bequests are all to cousins, namely Benjamin GALLY of Catton, Cambs., William GALLY of Halstead, and Mary LAURANCE, wife of William LAURANCE of Castle Camps, Cambs.. The executor of his will is listed as “my kinsman”, Thomas GALLY of Catlidge, Cambs.. I believe that Richard’s wife was named Elizabeth, and their children were William & Richard GALLY. Any assistance in tracing this family would be most appreciated. Dennis Galley, Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Hello genealogy researchers: This group is for genealogy, family history and local history research. Please enter all surnames in CAPITALS in the subject line before posting. This makes your post more eye catching both in the group and the archives. It will also avoid confusion if the surname is the same as a given name (eg James/JAMES) or the surname is the same same as a place (eg Lewes/LEWES). Please feel free to ask questions to help with your research, and help others where you feel you are able. Please stay on topic, Do not post virus warnings, 'test' messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages.
