We forget how recently we in
America and Europe lived a similarly fragile existence. In 1924, President
Calvin Coolidge's sixteen-year-ok son, Cal Jr., got a blister on the third toe
of his right foot while playing tennis with his brother on the White House
court. That was before antibiotics, and a week later the president's son was
dead of sepsis.
