Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day - Messier 101
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 May 16 Messier 101 Image Credit: NASA, ESA, CFHT, NOAO; Acknowledgement - K.Kuntz (GSFC), F.Bresolin (U.Hawaii), J.Trauger (JPL), J.Mould (NOAO), Y.-H.Chu (U. Illinois) Explanation: Big, beautiful spiral galaxy M101 is one of the last entries in Charles Messier's famous catalog, but definitely not one of the least. About 170,000 light-years across, this galaxy is enormous, almost twice the size of our own Milky Way. M101 was also one of the original spiral nebulae observed by Lord Rosse's large 19th century telescope, the Leviathan of Parsontown. Assembled from 51 exposures recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope in the 20th and 21st centuries, with additional data from ground based telescopes, this mosaic spans about 40,000 light-years across the central region of M101 in one of the highest definition spiral galaxy portraits ever released from Hubble. The sharp image shows stunning features of the galaxy's face-on disk of stars and dust along with background galaxies, some visible right through M101 itself. Also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, M101 lies within the boundaries of the northern constellation Ursa Major, about 25 million light-years away. Forwarded this email? Subscribe here for more Laughing at earthquakes Tommy Tomlinson May 17 READ IN APP First up today: Two new DOGLAND events! On Sunday, June 8, I¡¯ll be at Little Jumbo in Asheville for a conversation with author Denise Kiernan about the craft of writing and whatever else comes up. Denise has written amazing books such as THE LAST CASTLE and THE GIRLS OF ATOMIC CITY. She¡¯s a great conversationalist. Plus there will be cocktails. This will be a blast. Then on Saturday, Aug. 2, I¡¯ll be back in my hometown¡ªSt. Simons Island, GA.¡ªfor a talk at the Casino Theater sponsored by the St. Simons Literary Guild. The Georgia coast is still my favorite place on Earth, and I can¡¯t wait to see old friends and make some new ones. Plus there¡¯s a 99 percent chance I will visit Brogen¡¯s next to the Casino for some shrimp and beer. Come out and see me if you¡¯re anywhere nearby. Last Saturday we were at a vacation rental with some friends up in the mountains near Waynesville, NC when we felt something like¡ªhave you ever had a washing machine get unbalanced and it rattles the whole house? Like that. But nobody was doing laundry. A butter knife jiggled on a plate. I thought a bear might be loose in the basement. A few of us considered the fact that we were 4,000 feet above sea level, in a house built on the side of a mountain. We glanced outside to make sure we weren¡¯t sliding down. Then we started Googling until somebody found this. X marks our spot: Graphic from the NYT; poorly drawn red X by yours truly I can remember being in only one other earthquake, at least 15 years ago, at the old Charlotte Observer building. That was just a little shimmy¡ªI remember seeing ripples on a glass of water somewhere. This one was a good solid shake. We decided right then to call it the Earthquake House and that¡¯s how it will live in our memories. That¡¯s fitting because we spent a lot of time over the weekend talking about the earthquakes in our lives. We¡¯re all in our 60s or beyond these days. At least three of our group have had some sort of heart issue. We¡¯ve got lots of bad knees and backs. Nearly all of us, in the last year or two, lost someone dear to us. Every day it feels like the fault lines grow a little bigger and that distant rumbling is not so distant anymore. So how do you keep going? I keep thinking about something I heard Amy Poehler say a few weeks ago ¡ she was on her GOOD HANG podcast, talking to ABBOTT ELEMENTARY creator Quinta Brunson. Toward the end they start talking about how much laughing means to them, and at around 43:20 or so Poehler says laughter is spiritual. She quotes the great writer Anne Lamott, who calls it ¡°carbonated holiness.¡± It turns out it¡¯s not the first time she¡¯s said something similar (this is a shorter clip but go to 2:00 for the essence): The one thing I have in common with all my tribes¡ªall the people I spend time with, whether it¡¯s family or neighbors or college friends or journalism friends or whoever¡ªis that we spend most of our time laughing. Even in the midst of what I¡¯ve come to call the organ recital¡ªwhere we go around describing our various ailments¡ªwe¡¯re laughing more often than not. One of the things that Amy Poehler asks her guests is what their go-to thing is to get away from the troubles of the world. I have lots of escape hatches, but the one I think of right off is Martin Short as Jiminy Glick interviewing Bill Hader: Bill Hader¡¯s laugh in that clip

Inspiring Quotes for Friday May 16, 2025
Love True friendship withstands time, distance, and silence.~ Isabel Allende Isabel Allende Chilean American writer (1942-present) Chilean author Isabel Allende is one of the most widely read Spanish-language authors in the world, with a style that combines magical realism, personal experience, and historic events. She began her writing career translating Barbara Cartland novels into Spanish, while surreptitiously adding a few changes to make the female characters more intelligent (a practice that later got her fired). She was a TV personality for a while, wrote for a feminist magazine, worked for the United Nations, and fled Chile to Venezuela following dictator Augusto Pinochet¡¯s coup. She later moved to California, where she still lives and writes today. To say that she was well received in the U.S. would be an understatement: In 2014, Allende was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama. Mary Live long and prosper

At the time, experts were cautiously optimistic about the numbers coming out of certain opioid crisis hot spots, and now we know they were right to feel hopeful. U.S. drug overdoses in 2024 dropped to their lowest annual level since 2019, according to a report updated Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ? Preliminary data shows roughly 80,000 fatal overdoses in 2024. That¡¯s down a whopping 26.9% from the year prior. More good news: Overdose deaths involving cocaine and psychostimulants decreased as well, and fatalities aren¡¯t just dropping in a few states ¡ª nearly all are reporting lower numbers. ? Some credit the drop to the wider availability of the opioid reversal drug naloxone (a version of the drug, Narcan, was made available over the counter in 2023). Better treatment programs and health care services are potential factors, as well as a waning effect from the COVID-19 pandemic ending. ? To keep the trend going in the right direction, many experts agree that these efforts to curb drug usage need to remain in high gear: ¡°The recent drop in overdose deaths is extremely welcome news, yet there is still a colossal amount of work to be done,¡± Andrew Kessler, founder of Slingshot Solutions, a consulting firm focused on mental health and substance abuse, told Vox. ¡°Just as with HIV, COVID, or any other public health emergency, the keys are investments in research, practicing prevention, and evidence-based treatment.
