Inspiring Quotes for Wednesday, April 2, 2025
When you enter those places of trust, or power, dream a little before you think. Toni Morrison In her 1988 commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College, Toni Morrison urged graduates to use their imagination before making important decisions. A Nobel Prize-winning author known for her explorations of race, identity, and history, Morrison used her novels, including ¡°Beloved¡± and ¡°Song of Solomon,¡± to challenge societal norms and amplify marginalized voices. Her words remind us that true leadership isn¡¯t just about strategy ¡ª it¡¯s about vision, empathy, and the courage to not only consider what is possible, but also to work toward building a better world. By dreaming first, those in power can shape a brighter future for those who look to them for guidance. Morrison¡¯s insight serves as a powerful reminder that leadership shapes lives ¡ª and that the best leaders lead with both their heads and their hearts. Mary Live long and prosper

Wordsmith.orgThe magic of words MooT - the Semantics and Etymology game The world's toughest language game. mootgame.com How to sponsor? Apr 2, 2025 This week¡¯s theme There¡¯s a word for it This week¡¯s words chalk line ratchet parish pump Photo: Barney Devine A.Word.A.Day with Anu Garg parish pump PRONUNCIATION: (par-ish PUHMP) MEANING: noun: A water pump shared by people within a small area. adjective: Of local, often trivial, interest or importance. ETYMOLOGY: From parish (a small area, especially one that has its own church) + pump, of uncertain origin. Earliest documented use: 1840. NOTES: Before there were curated feeds, there was the parish pump! A real wellspring of information (and maybe misinformation). People didn¡¯t just come for H2O; they came to tap into the local grapevine. This tradition of gathering ¡®round the communal water source to swap stories isn¡¯t unique; sailors had their scuttlebutt, Aussie soldiers their furphy, and modern office dwellers have their water cooler. The phrase ¡°parish pump politics¡± describes issues that may seem like small potatoes nationally but stir up a full-on boil at the local level. In other words, trivial on tap, but drama on demand. USAGE: ¡°[Patricia Anne Churchill] wanted the paper, through feature pages, to cover subjects of greater interest ... and make the paper less parish-pump.¡± Paul Elenio; Pat Tested Boundaries, Shaped the Post; Dominion Post (Wellington, New Zealand); Aug 15, 2015. Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (4/02/2025): Jupiter and Ring in Infrared from Webb
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 April 2 Jupiter and Ring in Infrared from Webb Image Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI; Processing & License: Judy Schmidt Explanation: Why does Jupiter have rings? Jupiter's main ring was discovered in 1979 by NASA's passing Voyager 1 spacecraft, but its origin was then a mystery. Data from NASA's Galileo spacecraft that orbited Jupiter from 1995 to 2003, however, confirmed the hypothesis that this ring was created by meteoroid impacts on small nearby moons. As a small meteoroid strikes tiny Metis, for example, it will bore into the moon, vaporize, and explode dirt and dust off into a Jovian orbit. The featured image of Jupiter in infrared light by the James Webb Space Telescope shows not only Jupiter and its clouds, but this ring as well. Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) -- in comparatively light color on the right, Jupiter's large moon Europa -- in the center of diffraction spikes on the left, and Europa's shadow -- next to the GRS -- are also visible. Several features in the image are not yet well understood, including the seemingly separated cloud layer on Jupiter's right limb. Celestial Surprise: What picture did APOD feature on your birthday?
