Inspiring Quotes for Tuesday, April 8, 2025
I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. was a prominent American physician, poet, and writer of prose, perhaps best known for his “Breakfast-Table” series of essays, originally published in “The Atlantic Monthly” in 1857 and later collectively printed under the title “The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table.” The essays are a series of what the Smithsonian Libraries describes as “dramedy vignettes,” written as conversations between an unnamed author and residents of a New England boarding house. The topics range widely, encompassing everything from human nature to society, religion, and the art of conversation itself, with the tone shifting from the philosophical to the comedic. This quote from the series has echoes of the popular anonymous proverb, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Both remind us that progress — and perhaps even happiness — isn’t necessarily about where we are, but where we’re headed and the steps we take to get there. Rogers/Northwestern University Scientists have developed a tiny pacemaker with tiny hearts in mind. A team of engineers at Northwestern University built a device that’s so small it can be inserted noninvasively via syringe and dissolves when it’s no longer needed. That makes it particularly well-suited for newborns with heart defects, who often only need temporary pacing. ? “We have developed what is, to our knowledge, the world’s smallest pacemaker,” bioelectronics pioneer John A. Rogers, who led the device development, told Northwestern Now. “There’s a crucial need for temporary pacemakers in the context of pediatric heart surgeries, and that’s a use case where size miniaturization is incredibly important. In terms of the device load on the body — the smaller, the better.” ? Experimental cardiologist Igor Efimov, who co-led the research, added that for most of the roughly 1% of children born with congenital heart defects, the heart self-repairs within about a week. “But those seven days are absolutely critical,” Efimov said. “Now, we can place this tiny pacemaker on a child’s heart and stimulate it with a soft, gentle, wearable device. And no additional surgery is necessary to remove it.” ? ?Watch a video of Rogers explaining how it works.? ETYMOLOGY: After Carthage, an ancient city-state, in present-day Tunisia. Earliest documented use: 1940. NOTES: The term harks back to the Punic Wars (264-146 BCE), where Rome decisively defeated its rival, Carthage. After the Third and final war, Rome didn’t just win; they went full scorched-earth (and possibly salted the earth so nothing would grow, though historians debate that part). Carthage was destroyed, forced to pay massive tributes, forbidden from having a military, its population killed or enslaved. The term was popularized by the economist John Maynard Keynes. The technique allows you to create new and intriguing colors that will help you achieve that realistic look in your drawings, but getting this perfect blend depends on how you handle the pencil. Macedo gives you tips on how to approach blending, including holding the pencil and how much pressure to apply. Grid Transfers ? Grid transfers are another vital technique for realistic pencil drawing. After finding the reference image for the subject you want to draw, overlay a grid on top of the image and print it out. Then, lightly re-create the grid lines on your own paper. Work through the grid one square are a time to create a faithful sketch of your subject. This technique takes the guesswork out of image transfers, and gives you more time for the fun of going in with colored pencils! Three-dimensional shading ? Three-dimensional shading is an essential tool in any medium that allows for realistic rendering. In these lessons, you'll learn to identify which direction to shade your subject in, as well as how to build up these shades to convey the appropriate amount of depth. The result will be objects that appear to emerge out of the paper. ? ? ? ? ? We'd love to see what you create! Use #MMAcademy to share your work with us. ? ???? ? ? ? ? ? Fw: Ancient Origins Premium Preview (April 7)
News Articles Shop Account Was Messalina, Wife of Emperor Claudius, Mad? Or a Victim of Ancient Roman Misogyny? In the most highly anticipated event of the season, the fragrance of exotic spices and the sounds of boisterous laughter permeated the air as guests indulged in savory dishes and gorged themselves on abundant wine. The bride removed her veil to expose her flowing wild hair; embodying the Bacchic spirit, she shook her head and brandished a thyrsus, or Bacchic wand. Her handsome, ivy-clad groom, decorated in cothurni—footwear linked to Bacchus—was spinning to the euphoric music, swirling under the shimmering lights. In the midst of a raucous chorus, guests danced with fervent abandon, their movements a fusion of color and disorder, while the pair reveled in the ecstatic embrace of the evening. Alongside the myriad of celebrations, Tacitus reports that solemn vows were taken, auspicious words spoken, and appropriate sacrifices made. Yet for all that, he is astounded by the singularity of the occasion. The bride, after all, was no blushing maiden but rather the empress herself, Valeria Messalina (20 CE–48 CE)—wife these ten long years to Claudius (10 BCE–54 CE), the living emperor away on a brief trip. Of all the brazen moments of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, the ill-conceived wedding between the Empress Messalina and Consul-Designate Silius was arguably the most audacious. She and Silius openly celebrated their marriage in a bold act of defiance, while her husband, Emperor Claudius, remained blissfully unaware of the unfolding betrayal. Because the betrothal challenged the authority of the emperor, it was considered treasonous. Shortly after discovering his wife's betrayal, Claudius had Messalina and her lover executed. For the last two millennia, historians have been baffled by Messalina's madness. Why would she endanger her reputation, her marriage, her children, and her very life for the caprice of an illicit wedding? What could compel a woman of such position and privilege to undertake an act so reckless? Ancient and modern historians alike have attributed the most lascivious and immoral acts to Messalina, though a growing number of scholars today view her vilification as an instance of ancient misogynistic hyperbole. Consequently, it is not surprising that the ancient chroniclers depict Messalina's decisions as capricious and debauched rather than deliberate and tactical. Was the notorious wedding solely a whim of her libertine disposition, as the ancients suggest? Could it have been a deliberate strategy to unseat Claudius? Or was the wedding a complete fabrication and just another example of ancient hyperbole? Continue reading... Fw: ‘The Voice’ Season 27 Episode 10 recap:
From: Sharon Pohlman ‘The Voice’ Season 27 Episode 10 recap: John Legend pushes his steal button for nearly-eliminated artist who ‘exudes star power’ Denton Davidson Reality TV April 7, 2025 The Voice Season 27 continued the third stage of the competition on Monday with the second installment of "Knockouts" performances. In this round, each coach will set four head-to-head matchups from their team and will be forced to choose only four winners. While they won't be able to save any of the losers from their own team, each coach will have a Steal to bring a loser from another team with them to "The Playoffs." By the end of the round's 16 performances, 20 artists will remain in the competition. One hallmark of this round is that the artists get to choose their own song to perform rather than have it selected by their coach, as was done in the "Battles." Another is that without guest mentors assisting during rehearsals, it's the first time that John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé and Adam Levine get to work one-on-one with the artists on their team. Team Bublé For the first performances tonight, Michael pitted Divighn against Kaiya Hamilton for a knockout between two soul-pop singers he wanted to see go toe-to-toe. Divighn chose to sing "Harder to Breathe" by Maroon 5 because, like Adam, he has been the lead singer of a Top 40 band. Looking to make a name for himself, Divighn branched out on his own, but until now, he hasn't been discovered. Kaiya went with "Here" by Alessia Cara because she related to not "fitting in" when she was a teenager. Michael said the win "will come down to whoever delivers the coolest performance." After the two performances, John reminded everyone "this is a vocal competition," but added that it's important to honor people like Divighn, who has a "compelling" stage presence. He said Kaiya sang "her butt off" and Michael could go either way. Adam jokingly complimented Divighn's taste in music, but sincerely commended the singer for transforming his song. Adam enjoyed Kaia's vocal, but preferred Divighn's overall performance. Kelsea said that Kaiya made her appreciate the song "Here" even more than she did before. She then told Divighn that his cover of "Harder to Breathe" is "the only way to do it." In the end, Michael said he made a mistake by putting these two together, but chose Kaiya as the winner because "she just gave the best vocal performance."Team Legend In the night's second Knockout, John paired powerhouse Bryson Battle with country singer Tatum Scott. John urged Tatum to show more range in her voice while she rehearsed "Stick Season" by Noah Kahan, but agreed it was the perfect song choice. Bryson chose Aretha Franklin's classic soul ballad, "Ain't No Way," because he enjoys taking on "one of the hardest songs to sing." John was happy to hear Bryson nail all the notes, but told the singer if he lowered the key it "would sound a little bit richer." After both singer's performed, Adam noted that "it couldn't have been two more different people doing different things." The coach compared Bryson to Jordan Smith, who won Season 9, which bodes well for him in this competition. Adam then encouraged Tatum, saying Bryson would "smoke me" vocally too, but there was no clear winner or loser. Kelsea said Bryson's voice is "one in a million" and Tatum gave her best performance on the show. Michael thanked both artists for allowing him to sit there and be "completely taken away." In the end, John chose Bryson as the winner because "he has range, he has soul, and does it in a way that looks effortless."Team Adam In the night's final Knockout, Adam squared off Ari Camille and Britton Moore because he had no other choice but to put "good people against good people." Ari chose "Love Like This" by Faith Evans because she grew up listening to the song and it brings people together. To help Ari deal with her nerves, Adam reminded the singer, "No matter what, there is no consequence that is bad enough that you need to worry about it. If you miss a note you're not going to get dropped into a pit of li

Fw: 'American Idol’ Top 24 revealed RECAP
From: Sharon Pohlman : American Idol’ Top 24 revealed after Jelly Roll coaches contestants through final round of Hollywood Week Denton Davidson @denton_davidson Reality TV April 7, 2025 Last night on American Idol, Canaan James Hill, Gaby Samone, Mattie Pruitt, and Zaylie Windsor advanced to the Top 24 after giving the top Showstopper performances of the season. Who will join them? Tonight, the remaining 42 contestants went head-to-head in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan in hopes of reaching the next stage of the competition — and America's vote. The two-hour episode aired Monday, April 7 (8 p.m. ET/PT) with Ryan Seacrest hosting. As the hopefuls prepared for battle, the judges explained that their opponent wouldn't necessarily be their demise. The performances would be a duet, and depending on how things went, both contestants could stay, both could go home, or one could advance while the other was sent packing. For a little extra support and motivation, Grammy-nominated superstar Jelly Roll helped coach each duo as the series' first "artist in residence." The contestants got to choose their own partners before enduring a grueling night of rehearsals. Two of the most seasoned performers set the bar for the night: Thunderstorm Artis, a 29-year-old from Hawaii, and Drew Ryn, a 27-year-old from Arizona, sang "The Night We Met" by Lord Huron and Phoebe Bridgers. After meeting the night before, Thunderstorm and Drew decided to team up for this last round of auditions. While in rehearsals with Jelly Roll, the mentor instructed both of them, "Don't close your eyes. Both of you had your eyes closed. Find the camera. If you can't find the camera find each other." After nailing their duet, Lionel told the duo, "Thunderstorm, I love that you have a soft part of your voice and a rasp and a growl that will eat everything up in this room. Drew, you're a stylist. You gave us all the little nuances. We didn't take a breath until you stopped the song. It was that mesmerizing and I loved every minute of it." Carrie added, "It was the perfect song and the perfect voice pairing. You could not have done that any better." Luke wrapped up the critique by telling them, "We see kids who are 16 and we're like, 'Come back when you're 20. Come back when you're 22.' The reason why we're telling them to do that is to arrive at where y'all are at right now." With that, Thunderstorm and Drew snagged two spots in the Top 24.
