In all our searching, the only thing we¡¯ve found that makes the emptiness bearable is each other.

Carl Sagan

?was one of the greatest science communicators of the last century. A planetary scientist and astrophysicist, he had a gift for explaining complex scientific concepts to the general public. He was also acutely aware of humanity¡¯s place in the universe. It was Sagan who suggested to NASA that the Voyager 1 space probe should turn its camera around to snap one last photo of Earth before it sped away into interstellar space, from a distance of 3.7 billion miles away. The resulting photo, which shows the Earth as a tiny speck against the vastness of space, is known as the ¡°Pale Blue Dot.¡± The image had little scientific value, but its significance was profound: It gave humans a perspective of our world out there in the vast emptiness ¡ª and us, as Sagan put it, as ¡°momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.¡±?

Head in the Clouds? There May Be Benefits to Keeping It There, Study Finds

recep-bg/ iStock

Mind-wandering tends to get a bad rap, especially in an educational context. A recent study, however, found that when it comes to learning a new task ¡ª in fact, it may even be helpful.
?
Researchers in Hungary fitted 37 people with scalp electrodes to monitor their brain activity. Participants were then given an exercise that involved watching an arrow on a TV screen and hitting a key on a keyboard to indicate what direction it went in, per Australia¡¯s ABC News. Throughout the activity, they were intermittently asked three questions about their attentiveness: if their mind had wandered, if they¡¯d been thinking about anything at all, or if they had been focused on the task.
?
Using the data from the electrodes and the participant responses, the scientists determined if their attention had wandered and evaluated whether it affected their ability to complete the task. They found that ¡°mind-wandering while doing the task did not worsen performance, and in some cases even enhanced learning,¡± per a . Study authors also noted an association between a wandering mind and probabilistic learning, meaning participants used prior experience to assess the likelihood of something happening.
?
This study adds to that shows daydreaming can help us solve problems and reach our goals ¡ª and suggests that we may need to carve out more time for passive learning, said co-author P¨¦ter Simor: ¡°As our brain needs sleep, maybe we also need passive ways of learning, or ¡®wakeful rest,¡¯ to recover from tasks that require your brain to be online and engaged.¡±

Scientists Have a Potential Plan to Stop Airborne Pandemics in Their Tracks

R-Zero

The COVID-19 pandemic may feel like it was just yesterday to you, but scientists are already preparing to stop the next airborne threat before it strikes. The potential solution on deck is , a form of ultraviolet light that can kill viruses and bacteria in the air, at no harm to humans.
?
¡°UV light really doesn¡¯t care about the details of whether it¡¯s a bacteria or a virus. It can kill all of them, essentially,¡± David Brenner, a Columbia University physicist, told CBS News. In a , he and his fellow Columbia researchers found that the lights are particularly effective at inactivating pathogens in occupied indoor spaces, reducing infectious airborne viruses by 99.8%. That far surpasses the capabilities of typical air filtration and ventilation devices.
?
?More research is needed, which is why Brenner has set up a UVC laboratory to simulate real-life conditions. The tech is also being put to use at a club, a dental clinic, and a rehabilitation center. ¡°I¡¯d say the development has been slow and steady,¡± Brenner said.
?
These are small steps with a big goal: preventing another 2020 from happening. ¡°What we¡¯re hoping is that we can take a bite out of that next pandemic, which you know is gonna come, whether it¡¯s bird flu or whether it¡¯s something we don¡¯t know yet, it will come,¡± he said.

The Rise of Robert Devereux, the Second Earl of Essex and Future Favorite of Queen Elizabeth I: 1586¨C1587

Robert Devereux, who would become the 2nd Earl of Essex and Queen Elizabeth I¡¯s last favourite, was born on 10th November 1565 in the manor house at Netherwood near Bromyard, in Herefordshire. His life was to be short and turbulent. He would rise in the queen¡¯s favour, triumphing over all his enemies, but his relationship with Elizabeth would always be fractious.

He sought glory and engaged in military action in the Netherlands, France, Cadiz, the Azores and Ireland. After developing an intelligence network to rival the Cecils, he was a key player in the political life of the Elizabethan court. But as he rose to the heights of his ambition, he would also fall in devastating circumstances all of his own making.

Europe¡¯s Great Religious Divide

Increasing tensions across Europe made England fearful of a Spanish invasion. The Spanish Hapsburg Empire, under the rule of Phillip II, was trying to suppress Protestantism especially in the United Provinces where the Dutch were fighting for their independence.

Elizabeth I had a long history with Phillip, who had been married to her older sister Mary.

Once their relationship had been amicable enough ¨C he had even supported her against her sister ¨C but now she was queen, Philip¡¯s machinations were a threat. Elizabeth had inherited a kingdom that had been divided over religion for many years. Her reign followed her father¡¯s break with Rome, her brother¡¯s fervent Protestantism and her sister¡¯s return to Catholicism.

In order to bring peace to her realm Elizabeth and her councillors came up with the Religious Settlement. In 1559 the Act of Uniformity established The Book of Common Prayer and the Act of Supremacy underlined her role as supreme governor of the English church. A further act in 1563 laid out the doctrine of the Church of England. England would be protestant but Catholics would be tolerated.

Pope Pius V had excommunicated Elizabeth in 1570 as ¡®the number of the ungodly hath gotten such power, there is now no place left in the whole World which they have not assayed to corrupt with their most wicked Doctrines: Amongst others, Elizabeth, the pretended Queen of England, a Slave of Wickedness, lending thereunto her helping hand, with whom, as in a Sanctuary, the most pernicious of all men have found a Refuge.¡¯

But the papal bull also gave Catholics the order not to obey her on penalty of excommunication. It was supposed to support the nobles who had remained true to the old faith but Philip II, defender of the faith in Catholic Europe, believed the only way for England to return to the true religion would be by a full scale assault.

Fw: 'Survivor 48¡¯ Recap - April 09

From: Sharon Pohlman

¡®Survivor 48¡¯ recap: Eliminated player says the others are ¡®hoochies¡¯ and ¡®obsessed with me¡¯

  • ?
  • ?April 9, 2025

Heading into the seventh episode of??48, the three original tribes of Civa, Lagi, and Vula had just officially merged. Free to talk to players from all three camps for the first time,?David Kinne?assembled a new alliance of "all the strong people," including?Eva Erickson,?Joe Hunter,?Kyle Fraser, and?Shauhin Davari?to write a new narrative for the game where athletic players can be more than just shields and work together for one of them to win. Tonight, their alliance faced their first test when??split the 12 players into two teams for a challenge, sending both to Tribal Council for a double elimination twist.
  • ?

Read on for our recap of?Survivor?Season 48, Episode 7, titled "Survivor Smack Talk," which aired Wednesday, April 9 on?. The 12 players still competing to become "sole Survivor" at the start of the episode were:?Cedrek McFadden,?Chrissy Sarnowsky,?David Kinne,?Eva Erickson,?Joe Hunter,?Kamilla Karthigesu,?Kyle Fraser,?Mary Zheng,?Mitch Guerra,??Saiounia "Sai" Hughley,?Shauhin Davari, and?Star Toomey.

"Any move that needs to be made would have to be made using me"?¡ª Shauhin Davari

Following the first Tribal Council vote as individuals, Mitch was most unsettled by the realization that he was left out of a large majority decision. He was upset that no one told him about the plan to take out?Charity Nelms, leaving him to cast one of the five votes against Sai instead, someone he said he would have been willing to vote out. Shauhin and Joe both offered the explanation that the group thought he was too close to Charity to tell, but once Mitch turned the conversation into an opportunity to share his personal story with them, Joe realized that he was actually a bigger threat than they originally thought because of how likable he is.

With five votes cast against her, Sai understood that within the merged tribe there are players in a position of power already and that she'd have to make in-roads with them to avoid appearing on the chopping block again. She pulled Shauhin in for a conversation where they acknowledged his vote against her and vowed to work more closely together in the future, but Shauhin knew that as a player on the outs she was doing what she had to do. After Cedrek and Mitch also came to him for private conversations, Shauhin found himself in the middle of the tribe where he felt in control of swaying the game in the direction of his own preference.

"With respect, Cedrek, you lasted about 15 seconds"?¡ª Jeff Probst

In this week's challenge, the safety of immunity was offered to the two players that could endure holding up their pre-game body weight in water the longest. To determine the winners, the 12 players were randomly divided into two teams and the longest lasting from each would earn immunity while the longest lasting overall would also earn a modest peanut butter and jelly reward lunch. The twist of the challenge was that both teams of six, regardless of the reward win, would go to Tribal Council and vote one of their own out of the game. In addition, the player voted out from the first (losing) team would not make it to the jury while the second (winning) team's player would. The randomly drawn teams were: Star, Joe, Mitch, Chrissy, Eva and Sai on orange, and Kyle, Shauhin, Cedrek, Mary, David and Kamilla on purple.

When Cedrek, Star, Chrissy, Sai, Kamilla and Mary all dropped from the challenge quickly, the five players in the strength-based alliance plus Mitch were the only ones left fighting for their teams. Once Shauhin and Mitch fell out, David, Kyle and Eva began a series of "smack talk" across the podium, taunting one another in the spirit of self-confidence and even Jeff got in on the action, clocking Cedrek for having only lasted 15 seconds himself. By the end, Joe outlasted Eva on the orange team and David lasted longer than Kyle on purple to win individual immunity, but it was David that set a new record for the challenge (just shy of an hour) and earned reward for his team and guaranteed them each a spot on the jury.

"Can we manufacture a situation... and it's OK for ourselves to defend ourselves?"?¡ª Kyle Fraser

On the losing team, Sai and Mitch knew they were on the chopping block, understanding that Eva and Joe were a solid block and hold overall power among the tribe and that they were the easiest votes to cast because of the last Tribal. Even though she's been an ally to Mitch in the past, Chrissy told the others that she's willing to vote him out because he's a threat to win the game in the end. Feeling the heat on himself, Mitch pitched to Joe that he'd be using his Block a Vote on Sai to help build trust with him and to ensure that Sai is likelier to go.

On the winning team, Mary and David told Shauhin that he's a "smoke screen" vote to tell Cedrek which presented Kyle and Kamilla an opportunity to make their move against Shauhin that Kyle's had on his mind since Shauhin showed himself to be untrustworthy by lying to his face and going through his bag. Wanting to make the move while keeping David onside, Kamilla spun a lie to David that Shauhin probably has an idol and lied about it so that if they do decide to blindside Shauhin they will have given themselves a cover story for doing so.

At the first Tribal Council with the orange team, Chrissy and Joe argued their perspectives about whether or not the game can be won with loyalty and the timing of making big moves. In the vote, Mitch stuck to his word of blocking Sai, Chrissy showed she's willing to lie to people's faces, and Joe stood by his conviction to play a loyal game in a clean 5-0 decision to vote Sai out. "I think that they are obsessed with me," Sai declared after leaving the game, "and these hoochies are lucky that they got me out when they did."

At the second Tribal Council with the purple team, the debate of "short term vs. long term" and the value of alliances took center stage, highlighting the position of power that Kamilla and Kyle found themselves in this week. Shauhin offered that showing panic over a vote could spook your alliance but acknowledged that a lot of it is "smoke and mirrors" that makes it hard to tell what's true until "the smoke clears." For Shauhin, the smoked cleared to his benefit and Cedrek was voted out 5-1 as he expected.
