Say Cheese! A ¡°Smiley Face¡± Will Brighten the Sky Tomorrow

Jackyenjoyphotography/Getty Images

The Earth may laugh in flowers (as Ralph Waldo Emerson ), but the sky smiles in celestial bodies ¡ª or at least it will tomorrow.
?
?About an hour before sunrise Friday, Venus, Saturn, and the moon will align during a rare triple conjunction that will look like a smiley face for earthlings. Venus and Saturn will be the two ¡°eyes,¡± and the crescent moon will look like a big ol¡¯ grin, NASA Solar System Ambassador Brenda Culbertson told Kansas TV station . She added that the sweet display will be visible to the naked eye, but it¡¯s not a bad idea to grab a pair of binoculars to get a clearer view.
?
As with many celestial spectacles, : ¡°Anyone wanting to try for a glimpse of the conjunction should find a clear eastern horizon from which to observe,¡± said Culbertson. And make sure you set an alarm!

Researchers Created a Sticker That Has the Power to Read Emotions

Courtesy Yangbo Yuan / Penn State

The sticker above may look like a Band-Aid of sorts, but it¡¯s actually a poker player¡¯s worst nightmare. The can determine the emotional responses of the wearer ¡ª e.g. are they stressed, excited, calm? ¡ª per a study published last month. While this may sound like a mythical superpower, the science is actually somewhat straightforward.
?
In , researchers at Penn State University explained that each sticker uses sensors to detect physiological responses in real-time, like skin temperature, perspiration, and heart rate. The data is then digitized and analyzed by an AI model to identify the emotional response, which it did accurately 89% of the time in testing, according to Popular Science.
?
Beyond being fascinating (and perhaps a little eerie), the team said the invention could potentially be useful for doctors who are trying to gain a better understanding of patients¡¯ mental states, particularly those who don¡¯t express their emotions as outwardly.
?
¡°This technology has the potential to help people who are struggling with their mental health, but maybe aren¡¯t being fully honest with others or even themselves about how much they are struggling,¡± paper co-author Yangbo Yuan . The researchers added that while the sticker is still in an early phase of development, it could also be helpful in recognizing the emotions of nonverbal patients and, ideally, detecting mental health issues that may otherwise go overlooked.

How Single-Stream Recycling Works ¡ª Your Choices Can Make It Better

Alejandra Villa Loarca/Newsday RM via Getty Images

This article was written by , an associate professor of plastics engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, for ?.?
?
?
Every week, millions of Americans toss their recyclables into a single bin, trusting that their plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard boxes will be given a new life. But what really happens after the truck picks them up?
?
Single-stream recycling makes participating in recycling easy, but behind the scenes, complex sorting systems and contamination mean a large percentage of that material never gets a second life. Reports in recent years have found 15% to 25% of all the materials picked up from recycle bins ends up in landfills instead.
?
?Plastics are among the biggest challenges. Only about 9% of the plastic generated in the U.S. actually gets recycled, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Some plastic is incinerated to produce energy, but most of the rest ends up in landfills instead.
?
So, what makes plastic recycling so difficult? As an engineer whose work focuses on reprocessing plastics, I have been exploring potential solutions:

pecksniff

PRONUNCIATION:
(PEK-snif)

MEANING:
noun: A hypocritical person who pretends to have high moral principles.

ETYMOLOGY:
After Seth Pecksniff, a character in Charles Dickens¡¯s novel Martin Chuzzlewit (serialized 1843-1844). Earliest documented use: 1844. The adjectival form is .

NOTES:
Pecksniff sounds like a man who moralizes in public and misbehaves in private. Which, spoiler alert, he does.

But Pecksniff, seriously? If a character¡¯s name is Pecksniff, his moral downfall feels less like a character arc and more like a destiny. With a name like this, you have given them no hope. They¡¯re doomed from page one. See .

It¡¯s not just Dickens. The Harry Potter world has Voldemort (from French vol de mort: flight of death), 101 Dalmatians has Cruella de Vil, and so on. Heroes, on the other hand, get regular names like Oliver Twist or Harry Potter.

USAGE:
¡°But these ideological pecksniffs now face blowback from a growing ¡®freedom to read¡¯ movement, with gutsy local activists defying the screeching, self-appointed censors in communities across America.¡±

The Amazing Race?Duo Makes a Grave Mistake in Bulgaria ¡ª?But Did It Cost Them the Game?

April 23, 2025?

What¡¯s the No. 1 rule on?? You¡¯ve gotta read the clue! Then, you should probably read it again for good measure. Because one teeny tiny missed word could upend your entire race.

Erika?did?read her clue, to be fair, but she didn¡¯t read it well enough. That little piece of parchment specifically said that taxis were?not?allowed on their second Bulgaria leg, and the mother/daughter duo broke that rule, well, every step of the way in Wednesday¡¯s episode. If it¡¯s any consolation prize (probably not), Melinda and Erika came in last place anyways and this could¡¯ve-been-major mistake wound up not affecting their placement after all. Yet, it still stands as a warning sign for all future racers: Slow down, breathe and correctly read that dang yellow piece of paper!

So what else went down in Sofia, Bulgaria? Josiah and Alyssa continued to crush it. Having the privilege of starting the leg first, the married nurses had first dibs at snagging a brand spanking new Express Pass, and that they did. The task: Walking over hot coals, which Josiah claimed was his biggest fear. (He said he drinks lukewarm hot chocolate, because ¡°hot¡± just isn¡¯t his bag. Uh, that¡¯s a choice!) To his credit, he kept all 10 little piggies raised to the sky as he sucked it up and got the job done despite his reservations. He faced his fear, and for that, we applaud him!

Elsewhere, Jonathan and Ana made a smart strategic decision after figuring out how to use a cipher to decode a message into English. What most teams couldn¡¯t figure out was that the English letters would appear on the?bottom?of the device. After Jonathan and Ana finally realized what had to be done and received their clue, they decided to tell Josiah and Alyssa to flip the cipher over ¡ª?a bit of social strategy they¡¯re hoping could maybe pay them back down the road.

Despite some additional teamwork that occurred throughout the episode (Han and Holden made a kind decision to tell last place team Melinda and Erika about the whole cipher sitch ¡ª a risky, yet honorable ploy!), no one could catch up with Brett and Mark who ended up winning the week after nailing the Bulgarian national dance.

And even though Melinda and Erika were given a key clue?and?used heaps of taxis that other teams did not, they still arrived in last and were eliminated from the race.

Are you sad to see the mother/daughter pair go??Let us know in the comments!

    It's "Soundtrack of My Life Night!¡± on?.?The?top five open?the?show with a pitch-perfect performance of "More Than a Feeling."?Then,?the?masks will be singing songs with a special meaning to?them as?,?,?, and??decipher the clues. One celebrity must reveal?themselves while?the?rest will advance to?the?semi-finals.?Nick Cannon?hosts?The?Masked?Singer?on Wednesday, April 23 (8 p.m. ET/PT) on?.

    Coral

The first secret celeb of the night was Coral, and this is what a former costar of hers had to say: "Coral has come so far since we joined forces six years ago. I'll never forget when we first met ¡ª it was during a huge audition ¡ª and we were both so nervous. We had to do a chemistry read, and part of that was us having to stand really close together and literally just stare into each others' eyes before the scene. So awkward! But, something really special happened in that moment. We became instant BFFs. And, we both got the parts that changed our lives ¡ª together! That same magic is happening here. I've never been more proud to see her owning this stage. I can't wait to watch her rock out tonight!"

Coral sang "Sk8er Boi" by?Avril Lavigne?before revealing that her parents influenced the soundtrack to her life. "They've been there for me through the great times and the really difficult times in my life. I truly would be nowhere without them," she said. The panelists' guesses were?Hilary Duff?(Rita),?Ashley Tisdale?(Ken), and?Nina Dobrev?(Robin).

    Nessy

Nessy was up next, and his daughter gave viewers the inside scoop on the long-necked rocker before he performed: "I'm pretty impressed my dad has made it this far. Maybe it was all those high kicks! But sometimes, he can be expert-level cringe. He's constantly posting on socials. And have you seen his music videos? I almost died when my teacher played one in front of my whole class. And while there's a million things that he does that are like, eye roll, there's also a million reasons why he's the greatest. He makes the best milkshakes, he always helps with homework, and he even taught me how to drive a tractor. Dad, there's a million reasons I love you. Good luck out there. Just don't break a hip, okay!"

Nessy sang "Million Reasons" by?Lady Gaga?before revealing, "There's a million reasons I love my daughter. I did this because I thought she would think it was funny or think it was cringy, but either way I'm winning." The panelists' guesses were?John Popper?(Ken),?Uncle Kracker?(Jenny), and?Edwin McCain?(Robin).

    Boogie Woogie

The third performer was Boogie Woogie, whose wife shared how she helped shape the soundtrack to his life: "I have a case of disco fever watching my hunky husband on that stage. You can tell he is truly having so much fun ¡ª which is my biggest hope for him. I remember how hard he took the loss of his mother. I had never seen him so low. He channeled all of his grief into his writing and he made some of the most inspiring hits because of it. He's inspired my music, too. And, while he'd never mention it himself, I'm here to share that his work has helped so many others process their own grief, overcome illness, and, honestly, some fans have even said saved their lives. He's a light for so many people. I'm so lucky I get to stand in his glow. Boogie, baby, this is your golden hour. Now go out there and get that Golden Mask trophy!"

Boogie Woogie sang "Golden Hour" by?JVKE?before revealing, "This song reminds me of my incredible, lovely Boogie Woogie wife. Especially when we got to sing at sunset at the White House." The panelists guesses were?Daniel Powter?(Robin),?Charlie Puth?(Rita), and?Brandon Flowers?(Jenny).

    Pearl

Up next was Pearl, whose future son-in-law spilled some tea about his soon-t0-be wife's musical mom: "There was no scarier moment in my life than asking Pearl for her daughter's hand in marriage. I even chickened out the first time. She's one tough oyster to crack ¡ª but I get it ¡ª Pearl raised her daughter all by herself. She had to be two parents in one. I mean, heck, Pearl can hitch a trailer better than anyone I know. When she gave me her blessing, I was so relieved. That was a big win for me. There was no one that was more proud dancing at our reception than Pearl. Mama Pearl, I believe you've got what it takes to win. And I know you miss us, but don't worry ¡ª I've got things covered at home."

Pearl sang "Your Love" by?The Outfield?before revealing, "It isn't really just about the song for me. It's really the whole rock genre. It makes me feel strong! That one was for the pearls."?The panelists' guesses were?Bonnie Tyler?(Robin),?Wynonna Judd?(Rita), and?Brandi Carlile?(Jenny).

    Mad Scientist Monster

Closing out the show was Mad Scientist Monster, who had his wife let us in on a few secrets: "I am so thrilled that my monster has made it this far. But secretly, me and the babies do miss him. He keeps us safe and sound, and that's important to me, because growing up I didn't have that. I was orphaned when I was a teenager. With no family stability, I became my own parent and my own protector. When I met Mad Scientist Monster, I didn't know how to be loved. I didn't think I deserved it, but he was patient with me. He knew I was a little broken from my past and wanted to help me rebuild ¡ª piece by piece. So I helped him too. I was an audience of one while he worked on his first huge single. I've done everything to support our dream. Honey, I came to life when you came into mine. Now go out there and share your talent with the world."

Mad Scientist Monster sang "The Scientist" by?Coldplay?before revealing, "I wanted to do 'The Scientist,' because it's a pretty emotional and heartfelt song, which is really different than what most people know me for ¡ª party anthem kind of guy." The panelists' guesses were?Gary LeVox?of?Rascal Flatts?(Robin),?Kane Brown?(Ken), and?Jelly Roll?(Rita).

    The Elimination

Following the audience vote, Nessy was eliminated from the competition by the closest margin in?Masked Singer?history. Before he revealed himself, the panelists got to open up a "Crack the Case" clue case. Nessy's case held a Celtic knot. When asked what it meant, Nessy responded, "It symbolizes eternal love, which is something that heavily influenced my career." The panelists then submitted their final guesses:?John Rzeznik?(Jenny), Edwin McCain (Robin),?Dave Matthews?(Rita), and John Popper (Ken). Nessy finally peeled off his mask and revealed himself as singer, songwriter, and guitarist Edwin McCain ("I'll Be," "I Could Not Ask for More"). Robin is one step closer to that Golden Ear trophy!
