Fw: Ancient Origins Premium Preview (April 2)

The Maya: Building a Great Civilization One Human Sacrifice at a Time

The continents of America were inhabited by humans between 16,500 years and 23,000 years ago. These Paleo-Americans originated from Central Asia, in small hunter-gatherer groups which followed herds of megafauna across what was then the Beringia land bridge between eastern Siberia and Alaska.

At that time, the Asian and North American continents were joined due to a drop in global sea levels caused by glaciation. From Beringia, these hunter-gatherer groups gradually migrated south into North America and South America.

By around 10,000 years ago, there were a number of Paleo-American settlements in Mexico. One of the most ancient human skeletons found in the Americas was discovered in the Quintana Roo region of Mexico in 2016. It was located in a submerged cavern and belonged to a woman who had died 9,900 years before. The poor woman clearly hadn’t had a long or pleasant life. Analysis of her skeleton showed she was around 30 years of age. It also showed signs of syphilis. Given the way her skull had been stoved in, it doesn’t take CSI: Ancient Mexico to ascertain that she had been murdered. Possibly as a sacrifice.

If true, she probably wasn’t the first person sacrificed in Mesoamerica. And she certainly wouldn’t be the last.

The Olmec

The Olmec were the earliest major Mesoamerican civilization. They appeared around 1600 BC, and their heyday was between 1200 BC and 400 BC. They are often considered to be the mother culture that provided the template for future civilizations such as the Mayans and, much later, the Aztec. There are several reasons for this belief.

It was the Olmec who began the craze for pyramid building that so obsessed subsequent Pre-Columbian cultures. TheOlmec also used hieroglyphs which were possibly writing or anembryonic form of writing. This text has not been deciphered, but if true, then they join an exclusive group of cultures who created verified written text. This was almost certainly an influence on the Mayans.

It is highly likely that the Olmec created the Mesoamerican ballgame (more on that soon), which was hugely influential for over 1,000 years. They inhabited a region known for the production of latex, and rubber balls of the type used for the ballgame were found at an Olmec site. Other implements potentially associated with the ballgame have been found at other sites. Given the significance of the ballgame in Mesoamerican life, this is a major influence. However, there were other Olmec ideas that didn’t seem to catch on.

Toni Morrison

In her1988 commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College,??urged graduates to use their imagination before making important decisions. A Nobel Prize-winning author known for her explorations of race, identity, and history, Morrison used her novels, including “Beloved” and “Song of Solomon,” to challenge societal norms and amplify marginalized voices. Her words remind us that??isn’t just about strategy — it’s about vision, empathy, and the courage to not only consider what is possible, but also to work toward building a better world. By dreaming first, those in power can shape a brighter future for those who look to them for guidance. Morrison’s insight serves as a powerful reminder that leadership shapes lives — and that the best leaders lead with both their heads and their hearts.

Just like your local coffee shop uses punch cards to keep you coming in for that oat milk latte in hopes of unlocking a freebie or discount, you can make personalized punch cards to help you reach your goals. The trend “turns goal-setting into an interactive, creative experience rather than just another task to complete,” psychologist Smriti Joshi told Verywell Mind. For example, if you want to read more books, you could make a punch card with 10 book icons on it, and then include a reward for yourself once you hit that 10 mark. Better yet: Host a punch card party with friends where everyone can craft their own and bounce ideas off each other. ?

Gracias! In Generous Gift, Spain Offers to Restore New Orleans’ Historic Tiles

Page Light Studios / iStock Editorial/ Getty Images Plus

On cobblestone corners throughout New Orleans’ French Quarter, you’ll find unique ceramic tile markers that don’t look like your average street sign. That’s because the colorful, intricate signs were given to New Orleans by the Spanish government in 1959, to commemorate the city’s Spanish colonial era in the latter half of the 18th century.
?
The tiles, totaling 156, were originally handmade in Talavera de la Reina at the workshop of a family of famed Spanish ceramicists. But over six decades after they were first installed, they’re showing their age, so at no charge, the New Orleans mayor’s office announced last week.
?
The special cultural gift is thanks to ?ngeles Moreno Bau, the Spanish Ambassador to the United States, as well as the Spanish Consulate and tile manufacturer ADEX. French Quarter property owners can apply for free replacements of historic Spanish tile street signs through May 9.

parish pump

PRONUNCIATION:
(par-ish PUHMP)

MEANING:
noun: A water pump shared by people within a small area.
adjective: Of local, often trivial, interest or importance.

ETYMOLOGY:
From parish (a small area, especially one that has its own church) + pump, of uncertain origin. Earliest documented use: 1840.

NOTES:
Before there were curated feeds, there was the parish pump! A real wellspring of information (and maybe misinformation). People didn’t just come for H2O; they came to tap into the local grapevine.

This tradition of gathering ‘round the communal water source to swap stories isn’t unique; sailors had their , Aussie soldiers their , and modern office dwellers have their water cooler.

The phrase “parish pump politics” describes issues that may seem like small potatoes nationally but stir up a full-on boil at the local level. In other words, trivial on tap, but drama on demand.

USAGE:
“[Patricia Anne Churchill] wanted the paper, through feature pages, to cover subjects of greater interest ... and make the paper less parish-pump.”
Paul Elenio; Pat Tested Boundaries, Shaped the Post; Dominion Post (Wellington, New Zealand); Aug 15, 2015.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
How far should one accept the rules of the society in which one lives? To put it another way: at what point does conformity become corruption? Only by answering such questions does the conscience truly define itself. -Kenneth Tynan, theater critic and author (2 Apr 1927-1980)
