Read on for our recap of?Survivor?Season 48, Episode 8, titled "A Rift Between All of Us," which aired Wednesday, April 16 on?. The players still competing to become "sole Survivor" at the start of the episode were:?Chrissy Sarnowsky,?David Kinne,?Eva Erickson,?Joe Hunter,?Kamilla Karthigesu,?Kyle Fraser,?Mary Zheng,?Mitch Guerra,?Shauhin Davari, and?Star Toomey. The members of the jury that will decide the winner are:?Cedrek McFadden. "Somebody eat with me!"?¡ª Mitch GuerraWith the split Tribal event behind them, Joe and Shauhin got together for a debrief on their lessons learned. Shauhin saw his name written down for the first time, but explained to his closest ally Joe that he didn't believe Kamilla and Kyle were ever seriously considering getting rid of him instead of Cedrek. He did, however, feel like he got a glimpse into just how close David and Mary are and passed along David's wish that they continue to work with Kyle and bring Mary in as a sixth. Shauhin recognized that he prefers Kamilla because he has a personal relationship with her and not Mary, so bringing in Mary would give David the leg up on them. At no point did Joe's own closeness to Eva (also in their alliance) come up as a concern for Shauhin, though. The next morning (Day 15), tree mail arrived to announce a "new era" classic where the players would have to compete in pairs decided upon prior to the challenge. While the group was hesitating to initiate the conversation on who would be paired with who, Joe smartly saw an opportunity to state the obvious -- that the challenge matters for their individual longevity in the game and they shouldn't worry about hurting feelings -- with the actual intention of encouraging people to team up with their allies so that he can "start picking apart alliances." His prompt triggered what he may have expected: Shauhin called Kamilla and David called Mary. Kyle tagged in with Chrissy next, highlighting not that they're close but instead continuing the cover on how close he and Kamilla are. Joe then paired off with Eva, leaving Mitch and Star as the final pair.
For the players outside of the visible large alliance of "strong players," the pairing decisions underscored how much of a disadvantage they are already in within the tribe dynamics. Chrissy was frustrated that Joe and Eva became a pair because she thinks they're too powerful and Mitch was concerned that "all these new relationships" left him with a "big uphill battle" going forward. Mitch likened the experience to the new school year cafeteria politics of your friends deciding to eat lunch with their new friends, forgetting the friends they sat with last year (relating to the division of Kyle and David away from the original Civa players). Wanting to make a big move, Mitch brought Kamilla along for a conversation with David and Kyle where they pitched using David's relationship with Mary to form a new six that "for one vote" can turn the tides of the game and vote out an original Lagi player next.
My Spidey senses are tingling in the worst way possible"?¡ª Mary ZhengIn the immunity challenge, the pairs ran an obstacles in stages where two were eliminated after the first stage and then a third eliminated in the second stage. In the final stage, the remaining four competed on the basis of endurance as individuals to see who can hold on to a standing pole longer than their competitors. In addition to immunity for one player, the final four earned a taco lunch reward. For the first two pairs eliminated, they would take a journey that put their vote at the next Tribal Council at risk. The first three pairs to finish the first stage were Joe and Eva, Mary and David, and Kyle and Chrissy. Eliminated and destined for a risky journey were Shauhin, Kamilla, Mitch and Star. In the second stage, Mary and David dominated, leaving the other two pairs in a tight battle to finish, but the slow and methodical approach to a rope bridge gave Joe and Eva the edge to earn reward and advance to the final stage. Despite their prowess in other aspects of the challenge, David and Joe could not hang on the poles long at all and were completely out within minutes. Between Mary and Eva, Mary slowly lost grip and eventually dropped off, leaving the win in the hands of Eva who showed no movement at all. Later in the day on losing players' journey, the four players competed against each other in a chute-and-ball device where they had to take turns picking out one or two balls to place in their own section, hoping to avoid being forced into pulling red balls. The first of them to have three red balls in their section would lose their vote at the next Tribal Council. Wanting to position themselves to have the option of making a move with old Civa players, Kamilla and Mitch used eye contact to work together in the hopes that they could force three red balls on Star or Shauhin first. Given two opportunities to possibly save Star from taking on her second and third red balls, Kamilla plays the move that secures Star loses her vote. Meanwhile, at the reward lunch, Eva came across a scroll hidden in the bowl of tortilla chips and decided to sneak it into her possession without any of the other three noticing. Because everyone already knows about her idol that Star gave her, Eva opted out of immediately sharing the clue with her allies next to her because she thought "it might be nice to have something that's private knowledge to me." With Shauhin not present, Mary and David used the lunch as a chance to throw out Kamilla as an option for the vote as a way of cutting Shauhin off from someone they feel he's obviously preparing to use against them for his inevitable move against the alliance. "Some of you guys are doing a horrible job at jury management"?¡ª Kamilla KarthigesuUpon return to camp, Joe and Kyle met to confirm the easy plan to get rid of Chrissy next, but Joe disclosed David and Mary's new plan to oust Kamilla instead. Wanting to protect his "undercover" ally, Kyle came back to Joe with news that Chrissy is putting his name out there, triggering an "emotional response" from Joe that flipped him solidly back to wanting to get Chrissy out as soon as possible. After talking to both David and Kamilla, Kyle was spooked at the thought of Kamilla going home so he pleaded with Joe to help steer the vote back to Chrissy without "outing" him to the rest of the alliance. "[David] is the biggest idiot on this beach," Kamilla told the camera. "David is just so stupid. He shouldn't have signed up for 'Survivor.' He should have called up Joe and Eva and been like, 'Guys, let's enter the Olympics together.'" When the alliance finally gathered ¡ª not unnoticed by the players on the outs (Star commented that she wished there were subtitles) ¡ª it became a head-to-head, toe-to-toe between Kyle and David over whether it'd be smarter to go with Kamilla or Chrissy for the vote. Joe sided with Kyle, but was outnumbered by David, Mary and Eva who all preferred a Kamilla vote. Kyle's hesitation to vote Kamilla was a huge red flag for David and Mary, but with Shauhin's support, Kyle and Joe thought that they could "cause a rift between all of us" by forcing the vote on Chrissy without their approval. At Tribal Council, Star described for Jeff that camp dynamics appeared to be groups of people having conversations with each other while one or a few of them were left out of the majority of them. Mary intimated that there were last minute plan changes that threw a wrench into things while once again Chrissy voiced her personal frustration that there are strong players at the top of the tribe and she's "uncomfortable" at the bottom. David got annoyed by Chrissy's comments because he wants the season to allow for the strong players to align and make it to the end since it's become so rare. When Chrissy stepped up to the urn to cast her vote she admitted that she probably "screwed" herself by opening her mouth and she was right. In the end, Kyle and Joe didn't have to cause a rift in their alliance and David was persuaded (either by Chrissy's comments or otherwise) to join the 8-1 vote to eliminate Chrissy. Next time on?Survivor...The rift between David and Kyle grows with both amassing their own side in the fight for a say in who is the sixth member of their alliance.
