An interesting video

I found a video of the USS Olympia’s on a ?ship machine shop. ?I do not think the lathe is Dalton, but, the Olympia was a US Cruiser from the 1890s and the machine shop is a typical line shaft shop with a beautiful shaper he runs but does not explain. ?Anyway ?thought folks might find it of interest:

Steeling your thread Bart.? Guys have talked about a good countershaft setup for a bench mount Dalton Lot 3 4 and 5.? I offer this as a top notch solution.? The Logan 400 countershaft is just what you guys need.? I have this one.? Now the shaft size for a Logan setup is ? diameter and the Dalton is 7/8 diameter.? No problem.? Press the oil light bushings out of the castings now the Dalton 7/8 shaft size fits perfectly.? You would need to find a couple of 7/8 shaft collars to secure the shaft in the casting as well as come by a usable larger pulley.? The Dalton cone pulley fits in the casting just fine.? Here are three pictures of the Logan 400 countershaft setup.? Dennis.

I think my countershaft is off a South Bend or an Atlas. ?I have it mounted backwards and use the weight of the motor to tension the belt. ?Also, it is mounted on a board connected to a shaft which is bolted to a plate running the length of the table my Lot 4 is on (its the stand for a ancient ? Dewalt saw I found at Goodwill using some hose clamps to provide tension. ?By the way, I put a MOTHER HUGE pulley on it to slow down the motor to something that would not destroy the lathe:

So why are you running a cog V belt on a flat pulley.? Get that vibrating thing off there Bart.? Get a serpentine they run so smooth and don’t slip.? Ya I am on your ass HEHEHEHEHEHE? What rpm motor are you running Bart?? Should be a 1725.? If you have a 3450 motor on the lathe I can understand the huge pulley.

?

One other thing I failed to mention about the Logan countershaft.? The model 400 Logan is a 9 inch lathe and was the smallest one they made.? Also the bottom to centerline of the shaft is 13 inches were as the Dalton is about 11 inches bench to center of the spindle.? So if? you mount the countershaft as close as you can to the back of the lathe the belt should? just go over the top of the back gear.

?

I’m going to see if I have a extra Dalton countershaft pulley and if I do I am going to set this Logan one up for Dalton duty.? Not that I will ever use it but maybe someone ells will want it.? It’s really a nice little countershaft and to bad Dalton did not build something similar.? Dennis

I have used many many belts from a leather belt ?(I have staples and the gizmo to set then for the leather belts), flat belts, ?and others ?(McMaster Carr ?provides). ?This one just works. ?I know ?I provide you with comedy relief Dennis but heck I ?make it work! ?as to the motor, ?the plate on it was missing but I would guess ?it is the larger..?
