T-L headstock cone pulley specifications.

 

My T-L is missing the cone pulley.? Has a V-pulley of about 4 inch diameter.? I am thinking of making a step pulley of wood, need to know diameters, width, and amount of crown on each step.

Wood! Don’t you have a hardware store or a scrap yard nearby where you could possibly find one?

You just need to copy the one that is on your lathe head stock.? You will want to stack the pieces of wood and alternate the grain like in plywood.? Rough cut the circles and stack and glue them while they are on what ever?shaft you are going to use.

or…. you could use that as a mold pattern for a casting ?:)

You are also going to need a 1750 rpm motor and a ~5:1 reduction.? I used a 2" pulley on the motor and a 10" on the jack shaft.? That 4" pulley isn't good for your setup.

It has probably been 60 years since a hardware store carried a pulley like this and copying the one I don't have would be hard to do!

Thanks, L. Leonard, D, and Dennis. I will probably be using a treadmill motor for power.? Will check the output speed of motor drive and aim for a top spindle speed of about 700 rpm.? Have also considered adding CNC control so I could do threading without changing gears to get inch, metric, or modular threads.? If that ever fits the budget I will do it in such a way that the machine can be returned to original.? This machine will be plenty big enough for the types of projects I have in mind.? Have a South Bend Heavy 10 sold new in 1956 and a Rockwell Delta 10 inch, but neither is set up for metric or modular threading..

Good morning Robert.? Bit of information for you about your TL.? ??If the spindle bearing lubrication chains are still in place the TL head stock was designed as a pattern makers lathe or a wood lathe with the capability of very light metal working but no threading.? This being said the TL lathe and its very unique lubrication system for the spindle bearings allowed the lathe to be ran at much higher speeds than most lathes of the day.? The TL lathe was setup to run at speeds of 1500 to 1800 rpm.? So Robert pull the bearing caps and see if the little bead chains are still on the spindle if they are clean? the oil reservoir wells and fill? with spindle oil and re-install the spindle with chains in place. Also if your going to use a tread mill motor and have the variable speed control there is really no need for the three step cone pulleys you do not have.? If originality is not a concern I would consider using a serpentine belt pulley setup for the lathe.? Us as large of one that can be fit to the head stock and a quite small one on the countershaft.? Then when you find what rpm range your motor will run at then size the counter shaft pulley for the motor belt accordingly. Most tread mill motors I have seen have a serpentine belt pulley installed on them already so you would only need a larger one for the countershaft.? This arrangement would make for a very smooth running powerful drive.
