Re: Photos added
Dennis Turk
Hi All
Well now Mr. Wright has a very rare Dalton indeed. Also one of the most complete Lot 2 machines we have seen. As top collector of Dalton's I only have a few parts to one but he has the complete lathe with lots of bits and pieces. Looks Good Ron and thanks for posting pictures. One other thing Ron does your lathe have a nose piece to hold the collets or do they seat right into the end of the spindle. I have a Lot 2 spindle were Dalton put the collet seat right into the spindle in place of the 3MT. I have never seen another one like it. Ron Wright
Hi everyone, My name is Ron Wright from Worcestershire England. I have
just added pics of my LOT2 No-205. I bought it as a box of bits about 18 years ago. I have several lathes so this one is simply a collectors item. It came with chuck, face plate, 32 collets and closer and 30 change wheels. Only just found this site so didn't know Dalton's had an enthusiastic following. |
Re: pics

Hi Guys
If you take a look at Marks pictures you will see that his Dalton is a very early 1914 Lot 4. I say early because it has a Lot 3 compound on it and the cross side screw does not mount like all the rest I have seen. Marks lathe does not have a screw in mount rather a some what odd mount that he needs to post some pictures of. really bizzar. I have also seen pictures of a Lot 5 in Canada that is also a very nice lathe one of the best originals I have seen. Marks is one of the most original nicest condition very early lathes I have seen. On another note I will be leaving in the first part of may to travel back to Wisconsin to pickup the very nice Lot 4 with overhead drive that I won on eBay a week or so ago. On that trip I will end up in Oakmont Pa were I will pick up the Lot 8 9 1/2 by 48 inch Dalton which is the only one we have ever seen. Turk --- In daltonlathes@..., "Mark E. I just put some pics of the dalton here I recently aquired. I won't
be doing a full blown restoration but will be cleaning it up and making a few repairs. It is just temporarily set up in the pics to see how it runs. I will be moving it into my small shop in the spare room in my house as its permanent home. I will post more pics then. |
Re: this is facinating
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMorning Mark? ?? Where are you located.? Any Pictures? ? I look at all the restored Daltons nicely painted and get a little?depressed that mine doesn't look that good.? I use my Dalton for turning Brass and Nickle Silver ferrules so its kinda into a small production mode. Maybe later this year after I have? some ferrules stockpiled, I might have enough down time to make it look all nice and pretty. But in the meantime, I'm producing parts. ? this is facinating
Mark E. Frazier
Just want to say hi to everyone. I just aquired a lot#4 ; no. 300
Dalton lathe in very good condition. In searching the internet for info, I stumbled onto Oldarn.com where I found Dennis Turk who gave me a wealth of information. I had no idea this machine was such a celebrity. I bought this one as the main machine in my home shop. It seems to be a well built lathe. |

Lot 4 B-4 in Wisconsin
Dennis Turk
Hi All
Well I did it again. I won the lathe that was up for bid with the overhead drive. The wife and later this spring will be traveling to Wisconsin and Ohio. I will finally get a chance I hope to meet Andy Sargent and also Steve Wells of the South Bend group. I will be hauling a load of lathe stuff East and then bringing the Dalton home from Wisconsin. The Wisconsin lathe should make a great display and will be added to the other Dalton's on display at Turk Mfg. Inc. in Hillsboro Oregon. Will keep you posted on how things turn out. Dennis Turk. |
Re: dalton 36" w/ most orig tooling on ebay
Dennis Turk
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi All
?
Donald is sending me copies of all the literature
he has as most of it is new to us.? I will send it to Andy so he can get it
up on the web site.? The lathe Donald has is pick up only and I am
anticipating a trip from Oregon to Wisconsin to get it if I decide to bid on it
and can? win it.? Donald and I have had numerous conversations by
email and phone about his lathe.? he inherited it from a friend that died
and has no interest or knowledge of it.? Most of what he has in his
description is what I gave him or he got off Tony's site in
England.
?
The overhead drive on Donald's lathe is similar to
but unlike any we have seen up till now.? I think this was an evolution
from forward reveres being handled by clutches and gears to a forward reveres
switch and so all the really troublesome parts to these early drives were
replaced with just a switch and simple?belt and silent chain.? The
long lever hanging down from the left of the drive is for tensioning the
belt.? It is in fact the old lever that was used on the models with
clutches.
?
The Lot 8 91/2 inch should be crated for delivery
to Forward Air next week so I am looking forward to seeing this?unknown
lathe.? last year there were some parts to a 9 1/2 inch on eBay and I got
all of them.? There was the lower half of the end door with perfect tags a
set of change gears a chuck and one head stock clamp. The seller tried to find
the rest of the lathe but again it was a death of an old fellow that had it and
the widow or children disposed of it and what we got was all that was
left.? It was not sold it was dumped at the land fill.? They just
missed the parts that I got or they would have been gone also.? By the
looks of the end door and the change gears the lathe must have been in great
shape.? Such a shame.
?
Keep you all posted on the lot 8 when it gets
here.

The elusive 9 1/2 by 48 inch Dalton finally found
Dennis Turk
Hi guys
Well we have finally found a 9 inch Dalton. Its sitting 15 miles from Pittsburgh and was on eBay very briefly yesterday but a quick email and a phone call secured the lathe for restoration and display. The lathe is a bench model with no drive or any accessories that we know of so far. The lathe at one time had a lever collet closer on it but now has a hand wheel closer with nose piece and thread protector but little ells. Last year I found an end door and a set of change gears and one head stock clamp to a 9 inch and up till now that is all we had. The Lathe will be moved to Oregon by Forward Air in a few weeks and I can do a proper assessment and let all know what we have. This lathe has been in the owners family for a very long time and is being sold by the grandson of the original owner. We do not know as yet if he was the original purchaser or not. The lathe is a post 1925 constructed lathe as it has South Beach CT on the gear chart. I will put a few picture of it up on my photo site for you guys to take a look at. Will post more information on the lathe as soon as I find out more about it. Dennis Turk |
thanks for the photos guys,but.....
....perhaps my lathe was used differenly. I have in my box of goodies,
a bunch of collets and an adapter like a morse 1-2 that fits in the spindle. There are no threads on the collets to take them up tight. I think perhaps there may have been like a cap type collar that would go onto the spindle threads with a counter bore to help the aligning/centering issue. Not exactly a quick change collet though! Anyone familiar with this set-up. If it is what I think it is, I am apparently missing said collar I guess. any opinions? |
Re: I need collet closer parts photos.
Dennis Turk
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Mike and Jim
?
Yes the Lot 2 3 4 and? 5 only use 3C
collets.? The Lot 6 and the we think Lot 7 or 8 (unfound models) used the
3C and the 4C.
?
Ya know Jim I am still fussing over us not getting
that really odd 11 inch Dalton down in Florida.? Just could not make the
guy understand what he had and what should be done with it.? Money was all
he was after.? Bugger.
?
I did not tell you that Lot 5 that was up one eBay
for two days I think four months or so ago I did get the rest of the
lathe.? I have the tail stock legs (with Dalton Mfg. NY on it) and the head
stock cabinet (with South Beach CT on it) all most ready to take to the museum
and set up the Lot 5 that I have completed the restoration on.? The Lot 5
is the one I got about two or three years ago from NC.
?
I will post some pictures after its
setup.
