Re: Lot 2 Serial Number 411

Marc the very first Lot 2 lathes had the hand crank handles not hand wheels.? Not sure any of the Lot 2 lathes had hand wheels but the introduction of the Lot 3 did have hand wheels on the apron for the carriage and also the tail stock.? Marc I will say the very first Lot 2 found was in Holland.? It was back in 1999 when I got my first Lot 4.? That lot 2 was badly damaged with rather unusual damage then I realized it had been through two world wars.? Some of the damage looked like it could have been from explosives.? Like Shrapnel damage.? This is the lathe that the end of the bed tail stock end has about three inches missing so I have never known what serial number it is.? The lathe had been repaired a number of times I could tell.? Also was well worn and had seen a lot of work.? You have to wonder just what did that old lathe do in Holland all them years.? It did come with a pair of floor legs though they had been repaired as they had been broken.

Hi Denis,?

I do have a door and gears Thankyou I¡¯ve just not put them on for the photo. I¡¯ve yet to clear the Old paint Off the brass plate to work out what gears can go where.?

Interestingly I did get another cross slide with the lathe that fits the ways but if fitted with a tool holder would see any tooling way to high. I think the cross slide I speak of is in the first photo album I uploaded.

Yes. I have the tail stock barrel it¡¯s getting a good clean.?

Bull gear teeth are broken. I also have a damaged number 23 (I think it¡¯s a 23 from memory)?

Can¡¯t say for sure about the thread dial. The apron is tapped properly so I don¡¯t know.?

I¡¯ll have to count the teeth on dial to check. There are no markings on the top of it.

Re the extension? It¡¯s flush when the door is on. I¡¯ll have look but I¡¯m pretty sure it¡¯s one piece as I¡¯ve had everything completely to bits.?

One thing I have noticed from the group photos is that the other daltons I see have Drummond / ships wheel type handles vs the kitchen tap type handles on mine??

Sent from International Space Station.?

One other thing I see that you do not have a gear mounting arm on the lathe.? It fits one the large diameter of the left lead screw mounting bushing.? I see you have the shifter but do? you have the gears that mount on it???

Great job Marc

I am curios about a couple of things.? Ok for one do you have and end door and hinge for the lathe?? Also the extension sticking out the back of the spindle I don't recognize as standard Dalton.? Also your base casting for the compound slide is a lot longer than we see on the other Lot 2 lathes we know of.? ?Knowing that the compound slide was a weak point on this model we have seen a number of shop made replacements. Do you have a barrel for the tail stock? Also the bull gear teeth are a bit odd as you have what looks like a number of short ones but they also seem to be evenly spaced.? Are they repaired teeth or have they been shortened? Also your thread dial looks like it came from another lathe as the two very early Lot 2 lathes there was no provision for attaching a thread dial on the apron casting.? In your picture it kind of looks like an Atlas thread dial.? Your lead screw is a 12 pitch and as such the gear on the thread dial needs to be an even number multiple of 12.? 24 or 48 teeth.? 48 being standard thread dial gears on all lather Daltons other than the Lot 6 and Dalton 9 that used a 10 pitch lead screw so these two lathe models used a 40 tooth gear but the housing was the same as used on the Lot 3 4 and 5 lathes. The reason I ask about the end door is that I may have an extra one.??

Before and after. Another saved from the scrap. Joy to operate now.?

Total restoration work time approx 35 (real) hours start to finish. But that also includes all the tooling, saw table, steady rest, milling attachment, 4 jaw chuck and tail stock drill chucks and other accessories etc etc.?
