Re: Hello from UK

If you look at the very end of the rear bed way tail stock end you will find the Lot # and Serial #.? That will tell us what model you have. If the lathe has been repainted the end of the bed way maybe painted over obscuring the stampings .? As there were a lot of Dalton lathes shipped to the UK during WW I for war production most we see over in your country are the very early ones or Pre 1918.? The most prominent ones seen are the Lot 4 models as well as a couple of Lot 6 models.? ?If you read up on the Blue lathe you seen on Tony's site that is Phil Boxels and it is miss marked.? Its stamped Lot 2 but in reality its a Lot 4 though be it an early one.? Dalton started production in 1913 with the Lot 2 or the little 3 inch center height lathe but it was only in production maybe 6 months or a bit more when Dalton redesigned the lathe and the new model Lot 3 was larger with a 3 5/8 center height a much more ridged bed as well as almost ever other part on the lathe.? There are no parts on a Lot 2 that were carried over to the Lot 3 with the Lot 3 being a totally new design.? Only four Lot 2 lathes are known of. In early 1914 the Lot 3 was improved again and became the new model Lot 4 and that model was built till the end of production in 1929. I am going to guess that your lathe is a Lot 4 model with a serial number less than 2000.

Thankyou Dennis. Yes I did indeed find myself on Tony¡¯s website. I¡¯m at the level where differences are being talked about but I¡¯m not seeing the physical differences. Wood from the trees! ?I don¡¯t even know what model is truth be told. Stage one will be a ruddy good clean up and see what¡¯s what. Blatantly chipped teeth on one of the big cogs near the chuck, and reading site looks like parts have to be hand made. Such pretty machines.?
