About the lathe Dave has back in NY.? The lathe was originally given to me by a fellow in Philadelphia ?and Dave like he has done so many times for me picked it up.? What I wanted was the floor legs that came with the lathe and they are in transit to me as we talk.? For a first time lathe user I don’t want to discourage you but this lathe is in not so good shape and is missing quite a number of parts.? I have the only collection of spare parts for Daltons and I don’t ?have the parts it would take to bring this lathe back.? Brent we know of about 10 to 15 Dalton 9 lathes out of the over 14,000 that were built.? These were a quite good lathe when new and the majority of them were just plain used up in WW II war production.? When broken or worn beyond repair they were turned into scrap metal for the war effort.? I have three of the Dalton 9 lathes known of and only one of them is a complete lathe.? One is missing a couple of guards and is in usable shape. This lathe came from the Pittsburg area and again was saved from the scrapper but some of the parts to the lathe like change gears and such had already been scrapped out.? The third one was given to me by a fellow up in Washington state and was not a complete lathe and also badly worn and damaged.? As bad as this lathe was its parts have gotten two other Dalton 9 lathes up and running.? Dave and I was? hoping someone on the East coast not to far from Dave would?? pick up the lathe parts.? Trying to get them across country would be and expense way beyond their value I feel.?

So Brent what size lathe would you be looking for?? Also what kind of work are you planning using this lathe for?? There are a lot of other lathes out there that might be a better first time lathe for a person? like you.? Hope I have not discouraged you but the lathe Dave has would make a good wood lathe if not a metal lathe.? In fact I think that is what this lathe was setup to be used for and as such most of the important? metal working features of the machine were disposed of. There were things done to the head stock that are a mystery to us.? For one the ball thrust bearing on the spindle has been removed and a second gear has been added in its place.? Also the thrust adjusting nut at the end of the spindle has been removed and replaced with another gear for some unknown reason. The power surfacing and cross feed components in the apron are missing and I don’t have replacements. Also all the end drive items including the change gears lead screw shifter threading lead screw power feed rod and there mounts are all missing as well as the end gear guard door and also the back gear guards are missing.? This is why Dave and me think the lathe had been used as a wood lathe.? Brent here is a picture of a complete Dalton 9 that I have and by the way is only the second Dalton 9 with a 36 inch bed to be found.
