I had a flashback about the bad old days of local tv (before cable and satellite), and I recalled how awful the choices were back then.
Does anybody remember the Gene Carroll show at noon on Sundays? It was the local version of the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. I remember that we would make a mad dash home after church to watch that show (I think it was on WEWS TV). What a laugh it was to watch Gene introduce the talent before they came on the show. Those were the days!
Also, I remember the flaming redhead Dorothy Fuldheim on the local news (probably on WEWS TV also). She was a legend back then.
How about Ghoulardi (on Channel 8?). He had some ghoulish second or third rate horror movies every Saturday night. And I actually looked forward to his show every week. I watched his show on my 7 inch black and white tv that I think I got for my birthday. That tv was about 2 feet square and probably weighed about 80 or 90 pounds. But it was real groovy at the time. I don'r recall the brand name but it might have been a Crosley or a Dumont. It had a whole lot of tubes in it. That tv really threw off the heat. That was great in the winter but not too swift in the summer.
I don't remember when we got our first color tv. I just remember going to Bud Powley's and Jimmy Amstutz's stores and being amazed that the tv's they were selling were in color. And all I had was a crummy black and white tv. I guess I should just count my blessings that I had a tv at all.
What other local tv shows were there back then? Let me know what else we watched back then.
Just mesmerizing...

I think that Lou Groza had a sports show or a sports
segment on one of the evening shows on one of the Cleveland
channels.
?
Also, our minister, who grew up in Queens, NYC, had a
part in a wedding that involved one of Clarabelle The Clowns

And speaking of telephone numbers, when we lived on the farm, our telephone was the old crank type. It was a party line and we had rings. Our number was 27R14, which meant that we were on line 27 and our ring was one long and four shorts. We had to call the operator to be connected to anyone who was not on our line. I don't remember when, or if, we were upgraded to a more modern technology before we left the farm.

--- Chuck: I remember the old party telephone lines, too. I don't think we had a crank phone, but I remember how infuriated my mother would get when she heard another person on the party line listening to her phone conversations (otherwise known as eavesdropping). I recall that my Uncle Leroy Moser had the old crank type phone, and I was always intrigued by that phone. I liked his phone better than ours because it had a crank on it. We just had that stupid rotary phone. The good old days... Mr Wizard (Don Herbert)--a great science show for kids
The Cisco Kid with his sidekick Pancho
The Lone Ranger with his sidekick Tonto (Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels)
Some kind of space show with phony rocketships. I can't remember the name. Was it Captain Video?
Flash Gordon (a weekly series with short episodes of 15 minutes?)
I do remember the Howdy Doody Show with Buffalo Bob, Clabelle the deaf mute clown (all clowns are creepy), Princess Summerfallwinterspring, Phineas T Bluster, and others.
Steve Allen show (The Tonight Show before Johnny Carson was on it)
Amos and Andy (with the Kingfish--that show was really funny)
The Stu Erwin Show
Mama (an awful show); maybe it was I Remember Mama? Anyways, I choose to forget it.
Bishop Fulton Sheen-a real entertaining show.
Ted Mack Amateur Hour ( a precurser of The Gong Show which appeared in the 70's or 80's)--now that's my kind of show.
Dragnet (starring Jack Webb who married Julie London--she was really a great singer with a sexy voice)
Kate Smith (God Bless America)
I don't remember the show, but maybe somebody does; all I remember are the dancing Old Gold cigarettes. There was also some show that this goofy bellboy calls for Philip Morris. What was that show?

Well, the announcer always says "Now, please join Kate
Smith as she sings God Bless America".
?
I guess any singer who has been recorded never

Kate
Smith died physically in 1986 but her rendition of "God Bless America" will
always continue.? I remember when ever I was sick and had to stay home, I
would watch TV, Arthur Godfrey, Tennessee Ernie Ford (sp) and many other shows
and she appeared on them as well and the weekly variety shows, Ed Sullivan,
Milton Burle, etc.? We usually had a conflict on Sunday evenings as I
wanted to watch "The Comedy Hour" and others wanted Ed Sullivan.? That was
then followed by "The Sid Cesar Show".?
Someone earlier mentioned The Ted Mack Amateur Hour.? My sister
Bonnie appeared live on that show from New York on May 21, 1961 playing the
Marimba.? She was 18 at the time.? Someone recently found an archive
tape of the show and made a CD for her and I now have a
copy.
?
Have a GREAT DAY!

Ok you guys are killing me.? I'm starting to flow with the memories, now comes the things we used to do that was not exactly good.? I remember on halloween night time when we used to cruise the back country roads looking for corn shocks farmers put up.? We used to practice our tackling by running thru ?fields and knocking them down.? I remember one smart farmer who put stakes in the middle of the shocks, OUCH!?
?
Do you remember when the amish buggy was disassembled and reassembled on the roof of a downtown business?? I remember the sheriff coming to school asking questions about the incident.?
?
How about Lanny Rossiter?? I remember the name.? He dated a girl (?) in school and I remember everyone used to tease her about dating a jailbird because he spent time in jail.? I believe that girl eventually dated Emer (Els) Royer from East Greenville who was my cousin.? He served time in the Army as a helicopter mechanic and liked to hang out with the Dalton school kids.? Any memories of him or her??
?
I remember parties where we used to place our hands over our mouths and noses and blow out emitting no air causing ourselves to pass out.? That is why some of us are now brainless and lucky to be alive.??
?
Lanny ?

Kate Smith died physically in 1986 but her rendition of "God Bless America" will always continue.? I remember when ever I was sick and had to stay home, I would watch TV, Arthur Godfrey, Tennessee Ernie Ford (sp) and many other shows and she appeared on them as well and the weekly variety shows, Ed Sullivan, Milton Burle, etc.? We usually had a conflict on Sunday evenings as I wanted to watch "The Comedy Hour" and others wanted Ed Sullivan.? That was then followed by "The Sid Cesar Show".?
Someone earlier mentioned The Ted Mack Amateur Hour.? My sister Bonnie appeared live on that show from New York on May 21, 1961 playing the Marimba.? She was 18 at the time.? Someone recently found an archive tape of the show and made a CD for her and I now have a copy.
?
Have a GREAT DAY!

I was searching my vast cassette tape library this morning and would you believe I have a Kate Smith tape "An American Legend". I must have bought it a garage sale or at a pig sale (aka flea market).
I'm playing it now on my vintage cassette deck. No "God Bless America" song is on this album. Other classics are though.
You're right. Kate Smith lives on and on and on.

One of our former choir directors used Kate Smith as
the model for how the women, especially the altos, should sing.? He would
say "Think Kate Smith".? I think he had a physical posture in mind as well
as a vocal technique.
