Regarding the request for memory book. information.....

Patricia Dearolf Lee

I know I am slow but I just found and opened the read only file on
the request for photos and personal info for the memory book the
class committee is trying to put together. I wanted to copy and
paste it into the yahoo group but READ only means just that. I hate
being unable to control!

Please let me know if you did not receive it and perhaps I can
forward it to you. Hopefully it is being sent to all the classmates
who are not on line also and that the address list will be helpful to
the committee.

Paul the letter looks great, I like it a lot, just spell my maiden
name right. DEAROLF......dont know if I told this story but it was
always frustrating when my name would get mispelled or mispronounced
and I one day made a proclamation to my mother "when I get married I
am changing my name to something simple" That desire came true and
its been a great relationship! So watch out what you proclaim, be it
positive or negative.

Lanny I played the song in my head when I read your message. I
always loved that song and I can hear you singing it now (but not
then) I am sure you sang it with much conviction.

Also check out the picture that Betty Falb posted. For some reason
I did not see that either. Betty you look great and now we all have
to compete with that?

I will probably not be home before the request for photos has to be
in but I think they should use some that were posted by Corrine.
They were great!

Anyone heard from or talked to Cat lately? OH and Paul I am not
sure if I was the only tea pot in the operetta. I may have been one
of three I dont remember! I dont want that to be my claim to fame!
But yes that is still a fun song to do the motions to for the
grandchildren. I do remember one year singing a solo on the stage "I
saw MAMA kissing Santa Clause"

Well this is just a whole lot of thoughts I am catching up on. I
would love to hear from some of you that were writing more when we
got started. Like HELLO Nancy W...where are you and Eunice way over
there is Switzerland. Corrine catch us up on your life again. I
love hearing from all of you. Oh and Paul where is Tyrell NC
anyhow? Can you tell I am too lazy to look it up. We hope to
leave sometime in October to head up MD way and will probably stop in
Dalton so let me know if anyone else is headed that way for a
rondevous'.

Most of all let me know if you did not get the request online for the
Memory Book information and I will send it to you. Hope all of you
that were in the way of the storms were missed by them. Love and
Prayers...pjlee

Thanks for the newsy update of your Fair Week trip back to Wayne County.? Sounds like you had a blast.? I love your enthusiasm!?? So the music room is still used for music.? Subject: [dalton59] My Recent Summer Adventure from Big D (Dallas) to Little D (Dalton)

Hi Everybody:

Well, I want to share with everyone my recent trip to our lovely
village of Dalton, Ohio and land of the "Bulldogs." I flew in
Thursday, Aug. 28th and flew back last Wed., Sept. 10th-not wanting
to fly on 9/11. I had two main objectives this trip...to visit some
long lost relatives (Smiths on my Mom's side) that reside in
Alliance, Ohio. I discovered them by email after researching some
family history on my last August (2007) trip to Ohio. We met with
them and had the most wonderful time on Sept. 3rd, I believe. The
other objecive was to go to the Wayne County Fair! I got to go to
the fair twice on Monday, Sept. 8th. It was wonderful. I'm sure we
all have wonderful memories of School Day, and yes it was School Day,
which meant it was very crowded. I took some pictures, but don't
know to load them up into my computer yet. My son gave me a digital
camera, and a teenager I met at my sister, Cindy's house at her Labor
Day picnic taught me how to use it. Cindy dropped me off at the Fair
about 10:20 a.m. on her way to her water exercise class in Wooster on
Monday morning and I was off to see the bands perform. I saw
Northwestern, Doylestown, Smithville, and then our beloved Dalton.
We had probably the biggest! I was sure proud when they came marching
in with cadence (something I love since I made up some drumsongs that
we used while I was in the band). The kids were not in regular
uniforms, but in shorts with black t-shirts, or something common like
that. They marched up on a stage and did their performance there, not
on the field. Drum corps did not even fit on the stage and were down
below and in front of the stage. A majorette group of 5 was off to
the left. One school only had 1 majorette. Gee, our majorette lines
with the "All Girls Band" was the glory of the band. Dalton did a
group of Beatles songs and they were very good. They did the Alma
Mater, which I stood and proudly sang along, even enlisting a couple
that I found out were from Stark County. They stood too - how
funny! Guess since I stood up so proud and enthusiastic thought they
should too! Then next came our glorious High School song - Is it
Love (or Laud) and honor to old Dalton... I didn't care who saw me,
what they thought, but there was no doubt from where I was from! I
would have to say that I thought Smithville's music was best (they
did Elvis). Dalton's next. Found out that the band director they
have, used to be Dalton's. It's said he wears a Smithville shirt,
but underneath closest to his heart, wears a Dalton shirt. I forget
his name. One thing I noticed was that band members used music in
their lyres. We were not allowed to do that, at least when Marilyn
Graber was head of the Trumpets. All of you trumpets remember that?
We had to go and play our music for her every week so she knew we had
it down pat. I was in trumpet section for several years and loved
it. Our best number was "Rock Around the Clock!" I left after
Dalton played, met my sister and then returned in early evening to
see the rest of the Fair.

Went to the Shreve benefit Chicken Bar-B-que dinner - it was awesome
& just $6.95. Next we beat it over to the grandstand and saw and
heard the Oak Ridge Boys. They sounded great, but looked like crap!
Not dressed up, too casual for me - just looked like they come in
after their long ride in their big bus. Saw the Budweiser horses,
regular horses, school bldg, grange bldg, home ec bldg, etc. etc.

Friday before had a group of friends and classmates together for
breakfast at Das Dutch in Dalton. Here were the Dalton graduates
present: My Mom (Iris Smith - now Iris Yoder - Class of 1940), my
Mom's friend and mine, Miriam Wenger Scott - Class of 1940, my former
babysitter when a child - June Ressler Hiner - Class of 1948 (who
still performs at h. school football games on Homecoming playing Bass
drum - with present drum group (in her 70's), Sylvia Slabach
Drushell - Class of 1958 (former Homecoming Queen and Trumpet in
Girl's Band), Cookie Shane/Birbeck - Class of 59 --YEA! -Baritone
player in band, Shirley Moser/Wyss - Class of 59 - Trumpet in band,
Karen Eckard/Baer - 59, of course, Majorette & Drum Majorette,
Myself - 59 - also Trumpet, and underclassman Ruthie Slabach Camp -
Class 1962 - played trumbone in band. We could have had a nice
little band right there. Enjoyed our fellowship together. It was
great.

The other thing I wanted to share with you was that I went uptown to
take some pictures of Methodist and Presby churches, downtown sq. -
you know hit all the big tourist attractions and realized that the
kids (Jr. High) were just getting out of OUR High School building. I
thought to myself, I bet the door will be open and I went over to see
if I could get it and look around. A man met me at the door and
asked if he could help me and I said I went to school here 50 years
ago and still have dreams about this place. Would I be able to go in
and look around - He was the principal, and said sure and introduced
himself. Didn't follow me around or anything. You know I could have
planted a bomb in there and nobody would have known it. I went on
all 3 floors, even the Girl's basement restroom (nothing changed in
there). I took pictures of the rooms that meant most to me...1st on
my list - The Music Room - still being used, the Typing/Shorthand
Room, by which I have learned and earned my living, a picture of
Auditorium, and Stage, where I have early memories of singing and
being on that stage. It was really fun. Maybe it will be open for
us for Reunion. Principal said he has had several classes do that.
You know our memories of it are "Large, and looming, and rather
intimidating, but really it wasn't that large. It was hot in there,
no air. They were having a Study hall upstairs, maybe keeping some
kids after school - don't know??? A girl's volleyball team was
practicing in Auditorium. All the trophies that we had earned are
gone - only later year trophies.

Guys, we lived, I feel in the hayday of the 50's and the greatest
time for that area of Wayne and Stark County. I kept thinking I
would run into some more classmates, but most are gone as my Mom kept
telling me, and are on the Internet! Massillon is pretty dead.
Wooster looked better downtown than Massillon. Went to Canton too
and by the way - that nightclub name I was trying to think of which
was replaced by Town & Country Buffet-where the "big stars" played
was called "Casablanca" - this information compliments of Larry Baer
(Karen's husband) whom she called and asked him when it was brought
up! She knew he would know, and he did. Mystery solved.

The latest tourist attraction in town is a TREE at Billie J.
McFarren's house (don't remember if one going North from sq. or up at
light at Methodist church)it's partially cut down and a guy carved
all kinds of animal figures into it. Pretty neat! Picture was in the
paper. Wanted to visit his son's church, but didn't get to. The big
news all the town folk are excited about is Dalton is getting
a "Dollar General." Right now - not even a grocery store in town,
most go to Buehlers in Orrville. Should have gone up to one of the
football games (they played Tuslaw - at home) on one of the Friday's
I was there, but didn't.

my list - The Music Room - still being used, the Typing/Shorthand

My wife is in San Antonio from last Friday until next Sunday, staying with the daughter-in-law and kids for a spell while our son is at a special school in So. Calrolina for 3 months.? Like weasel said, no problem there with the "himmacane".

?

Meanwhile, while grandma is in S.A. with the others, our 5th grand kid and 2nd granson, Luke, decided to come early and was introduced to this world at 5:51am on 9/14, 7lbs 13 ozs and 20 inches.? All are well, except grandma who is depressed from missing the arrival.

Hello:

To all of you on the unofficial planning committee.

It's great to hear that the official planning comittee is letting us
know what is happening.

Do any of you know if there is a website or users group that we can
look at to see what is being planned?

At this point the unofficial planning committee has several unplanned
events which may or may not occur. Spontaneous unplanned events are
often more fun than planned events.

Looking forward to many unplanned, disorganized, spontaneous non-
events next May.

P.S. Ike was no big deal for us--not a drop of rain even though Ike
was 250 miles east of us. What a mess that hurricane made though.
We're glad that it missed us.

Hi everybody,
I heard from Cookie Shane via e-mail (she's on the Reunion
Committee) and
she said that the committee got a list of the people who started
high school
with us but didn't graduate with us......they plan to invite those
people.
Also, she talked to Merlin Stoin a few days ago ("what fun", she
said).
Don & Beth Johnson have also joined the committee. She
said "it's hard to
get people to help on a committee, but guys that live around here
just don't
want to get involved". The committee is working on a Memory

They are using the many resources that the Dalton Historical Society

Hi gang
Last week we bought our tickets to fly from Brazil to Cleveland in May.
We will rent a car and visit Otis' siblings in Indiana and PA, but
headquarter with my Mom at OrrVilla. Otis will not be able to stay for
the reunion and will return to Brazil May 26, but I will return June 1
(the day after!) We are following all the campaign news and views,
Ike's destruction, etc. I look forward to seeing each one and have
enjoyed the site entries.
Love and Blessings,

Thanks Gwen for your work on getting this thing going.? Just a quick note which may or not be of interest, those who knew me probably find this amazing, I did.? In church last Sunday the hymn before communion was "Let Us Break Bread Together".? I sang that as a solo during one of the school programs and still could sing the words from memory.? Not only was the amazing thing was I sang a solo, but the fact in those days you could have a religious hymn and/or program in a public school.? I wonder if that is still true in Dalton today?

Ya'll take care,? Lanny

Re: My summer adventures.............

Lanny and Judy Royer

Dear ya'll,

?

Thanks Patricia for your summer happenings.? As usual, we tried to get out of here as much as possible during the 110 plus degree times.? We did have a reunion here of the guys who served with me in our Army unit, wow, 40 years ago.? Had a great time but there sure were alot of old guys and wives there.

?

We were to go?on our usual Hawaii trip in June/July but thanks to ATA going under we changed our plans, it was a free ticket too.? We went to San Diego instead.? Had a great time.? We were going to play golf at Torrey Pines but it was closed to public because of the PGA tournement, so we played elsewhere.

?

Spent time in our timeshare in Sedona, AZ.? Spent the month of August in Pinetop, AZ, 7200 feet up.? Nights in? the 50s and the days were 70-80s.? Played golf 6 times and visited every antique shop about 3 times within a 100 square mile area.? Found a real neat small Presbyterian church up there, very traditional, about 200 in congregation compared to 2000 in our church here.? Good to be home tho, came back one day early.? Youngest daughter getting ready to have Luke, their number 3, plus they were moving into a new house and needed help.? Luke will make number 5 grand kids.?

?

For Thanksgiving we will all head to San Antonio, TX to spend a week with Zachary and family.? They were recently transferred from Ramstein, Germany after 3 years.? Hopefully he will not be deployed again.? Has been in about 15 years and has spent times in Afghanistan and Iraq.? He is now in a special school for 3 months in South Carolina.

?

Well I hope you all have had a wonderful summer.? Patricia and I started, now it is up to youse to recipricate (see what college has done for me).

?

God Bless you and America,? Lanny

I have been wondering what all of you are doing this summer. Just
drop us a line and tell us more.

I will tell you what I already have told and that is that we left for
the N ga mountains on May 17th and worked at a camp here for about a
month and when they could not seem to get our schedule organized and
there were too many conflictions and the drive was 40 miles each way
we decided to give that job up although we enjoyed it.

After quitting our jobs and not wanting to spend all the time cooped
up in the rv we took some side trips to Chattanooga Tn and stayed in
a great bed and breakfast and while there we took an evening cruise
on the riverboat on the TN river. We also did some day hiking and
each weekend we made an adventure out of finding a new laundry mat in
a new town to do our laundry. Yes we find pleasure in simple
things. We found some flea markets and antique shops and junk shops
and just enjoyed the beauty of the country while driving around. We
also spent time watching the white water rafters on the Ocoee River
in Tn and walking in the woods and sitting on the rocks.

Soon we decided to see if we could find a lot to buy to put the RV on
and while looking we found a great deal on a small cabin on a creek
and decided it was a better place for our money than in the bank. So
we now have two houses (never say never) both paid for (thank you
LORD) but still taxes insurance and utilities. But we are blessed
and enjoying life. We have had guests in our home several times
since the purchase and know that we were given the home for
hospitality (since it also has a hot tub) It is small but adequate
and tucked away in the mountains.

We hope to go to Ohio and MD in October and then to Ocean City MD
with some friends for a few days. Perhaps a trip to Lancaster PA
to "sight and sound" which we love. Look it up online. They give
great christian drama's and we love the area since that is where my
great grandparents came from it feels like home.

Perhaps in November my husband may want to go back to southern Ohio
to do some deer hunting as he got a deer there last year. Remains to
be seem! Not the deer's remains but the hunting! Then we will be
back in Fl for the winter as far as we know........ ......or should I
say Lord willing. Then come the first of the year it will be 5
months till our reunion. Would love to hear some details..... .

Lets hear from the rest of you. I know that you have eluded to some
little trips here and there. Continue to enjoy life my friends.
Keep digging in those boxes for high school treasures and let us know
what you have found.
