Reunion Cookout??
John, your idea of doing a cookout/carry-in sounds great. I'd be
happy to do Brazilian food and I'd love to taste that Texas Beef Brisket. I could probably get the Martins Church Pavillion and my brothers' 2 grills. The Pavillion has a nice country outdoors atmosphere (for all of us who have lived in cities the last 50 years) as well as an indoor meeting room/restrooms. Martins Mennonite is on Church Road, 3 miles from DHS. Every time we go back to Ohio, we enjoy visiting Lehmans, the Thursday auctions and the Swiss Museum in Kidron(our family Bible printed in late 1500's is there). The stores behind Lehmans are interesting, especially the international 10,000 Villages. I always spend hours in Connections (a wonderful store of used goods) and watch Amish women quilt. We visit Simply Smuckers, a day in Holmes County, an Indians game, the Outlet stores in Lodi, numerous great restaurants, Putt 'n Stuff at Riceland (minigolf, water bumper boats, mini race cars, climbing post, etc) Dunn's showroom. The Science Museum on the lake front is good, Louie Bromfield's Malabar Farm, College of Wooster Cultural and Sports events. Of course the best is to be with family, friends and church. For lodging, check out Royal Star Inn at Riceland. I look forward to hearing why DHS-59ers live in 14 states and 2 foreign countries, especially what is the attraction in Texas (4). I think 5 are connecting to farming--I am very happy about this and would like to hear how it's changed. How many of us lived on farms when we graduated? How does our rural background contribute unique values? I counted 22 with Ohio addresses. We could almost do a hayride/progressive supper! Someone mentioned the time posted on our site--it's GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and one learns to calculate quickly as you travel. Brazil is -3 and Dalton is -4 until they go back to EST. (Did anyone else ever use the terms "fast time and slow time"? Strange!) Last night we had a Spaghetti Fest--we made, rolled out and cut the spaghetti and had 6 homemade sauces. We were guests of the Java Users Group, DFJUG. We are following the economic crisis and bailout, campaigns and World Series. I love the question at the bottom of this posting site: "What language is this post in?" with a choice of 27 languages. Sometime I'll try out the Portuguese option. Do they have translations? Have a good day--Betty |

开云体育If you Google (isn't it interesting how that has become a verb) "monarch
butterflies", you get lots of hits.? Of course, there is a Wikipedia
article on them.? I remember reading an article a couple of years ago
telling about the fact that it is the second generation that completes the
journey back North and that somehow the information for the trip is genetically
imprinted or something.

Betty: Look at message number 65 for nickname history. Those snakes are terrifying. Maybe what I saw wasn't really an anaconda. I just call all snakes anacondas (kind of like the Kleenex name for all facial tissues). Concerning monarch butterflies, I think I have read that they migrate to Mexico, but I did not realize most of them croaked on their way back north. That might explain why I never see them on their way back to the tundra. That steak is really cheap where you are. For $15 here you get grilled shoe leather. I would rather have Texas beef brisket than Texas steak anytime. Question for the group: Can you buy beef brisket in Ohio? I don't recall seeing that in the grocery stores there. I remember a lot of swiss steak, cube steak, and beef tongue (and of course burgers). Ohio does have great pork and sausage. I'm still trying to find edible sausage here. Who do you think we should volunteer among the class members who still live in Ohio to have a barbecue for the group? I think it would be fun to have everyone bring some food (or cook some there if it's possible to find the ingredients)from where you currently live (or maybe where you lived in the past). I would volunteer to cook a beef brisket if I could find one there to grill. And it is not corned beef brisket, although I like that too. Amazon River mouth
I forgot(a common symptom?) to say that the Amazon River mouth is
really 90 miles across. The 2 main cities are diagnonal across, so that is the reason for the 40 minute air crossing. There are many islands in the mouth. The Marajó island is the size of Switzerland. (Eunice, I think of you whenever Switzerland is mentioned. I hope you come next May.) What a fascinating world. And now the World Economics have become even more fascinating or devastating. I think our reunion could have several roundtable discussions with 3 presenters and then open debate. Let's keep dialogue going. Betty |
Snakes, Butterflies and Beef
Hey Weaselmeister (I don't remember how you got that nickname)
We have boa constrictors (your Anacondas) called Sucuri. The adults are 15-30 feet long. We had one experience I will never forget. Otis and I were in a marsh gathering palm branches for thatch walls on the privy of the camp. We were standing on several to keep from sinking down in the mud when we both noticed the 8" diameter snake curving over the branches between us. We didn't wait to see the head or tail, and I lost my thong in the escape. We also had coral snakes, but we never saw any rattlers. When we lived in the lower Amazon valley (Pará) we had a snake in our bedroom once, but your yard sounds wilder than ours! Your Monarchs do not get to Brazil. My encyclo. says "Dense clouds of monarchs may travel up to 2,000 miles to California, Florida and Mexico." And I love this: "The butterflies spend the winter resting and conserving energy for their return flight in the spring. Few adults live long enough to complete the return trip." They are known as the long-distance champions and travel in "swarms". We have another species of Monarchs (milkweed butterflies), large, slow-flying, short front legs, orange with black veins and borders,of Danaus plerippus family. Our Blue butterflies are most beautiful. We have lots of steak houses, all you can eat for $15. Most of our beef is grassfed. Too bad that with age, we can't accomodate the amounts we did 50 years ago! Our daughter and family are coming for lunch, so want to put the Salmon filet (with fresh ginger, orange zest, garlic, soy sauce) in the oven. We just got back from the Academy. I do water aerobics and Otis does the "machines" 3x a week. Betty |
Re: Hotels/Motels

开云体育When we were in Ohio for my aunt's funeral, we stayed at the Hilton Garden
Inn in Wooster.? It is new and nice and the rates are not bad; I think we
paid $107 per night and that included breakfast; it was lower without
breakfast.
?
Early reservations are good, though, because it is right across the road
from OARDC and people come there for conferences and stay at the Hilton Garden
Inn.
?
I'm guessing that the College of Wooster commencement is in early
May.? The academic calendars these days seem to be much earlier than when
we were there in our years.

Lanny:
How about the No-Tel Motel on old US 30 between Dalton and Massillon? I remember the name (how could you forget a name like that?). I remember always seeing lots of cars at that place everytime we drove past it. Always saw cars during the daytime; I wonder why it was always so busy during the daytime. They probably had hourly rates. Do you suppose that place still exists? The name was hilarious. I don't know if Dalton has any motels. I think there might be a motel in Riceland. Wooster and Massillon have motels for sure. There is an old Victorian style bed and breakfast called Black Squirrel Inn in Wooster which has 4 rooms. It said in the ad that it is close to the College of Wooster. Room rates are $75-$90. And there is a special rate for renting the whole house. Sounds pretty neat to me. I think you can look at pictures of the place at www.bbonline.com/oh/blacksquirrel/rooms.html I don't know how difficult it might be finding rooms in Wooster in May if the College of Wooster has graduation events at that time. If all else fails, maybe we could all stay with Lynn Weikert. The Weaselmeister In dalton59@..., Lanny and Judy Royer <jylyry42@...> wrote: the Dalton area now? ?messages to becoming only one.? Dalton Visit
Just completed a five day visit to the Orrville/Wooster/Dalton area.
Most of the time spent with my dad and stepmonther who live at OrrVilla in Orrville. We visited a number of local attractions including Lehman's Hardware - Jay Lehman bought that business from my grandfather A.B. Sommer who built the original store in 1916. Also had my ice cream fix at the Dairyette. And had to get some Troyers Trail Balogna and swiss cheese. Attended the Rotary meeting that was held at the Methodist Chucrh - the same place it has been meeting for over 50 years. In case any of you are planning on being here in your RV, we are camping at Meadow Lake Park north of Wooster. Very nice and quiet place. Has electric and water but no sewer hookups. It is about 20 miles to Dalton from the campgroung. Price is $25 per night. There is also another campground in Mt. Eaton that is very nice but very pricy at $44 per night. Last year we stayed at Caskey's which is north of Dalton north of Burton City. Not bad but like the Meadow Lake one better. Weasel, as for the Monarchs, I believe they all migrate to one place in Mexico for the winter. Also glad to see you getting involved in the environment. Since we have lots of oaks in our area around Austin, hug a few of them for us while we are gone on this trip. To those that have been corresponding through this media, thank you. Just to let you know that I haven't done much writing but have read eveyone of the emails and they are very interesting. Sure helps conjure up lots of memories. Keith |
