Re: Halloween Flashback

Gwen Meier

I, too, remember the Halloween costume contest at the high school.??? My parents would always take me and we would sit in the audience.???? I remember one costume in particular.......a person who was on stilts and he had a scary?(to me, at least) skull mask on and he wore real dark clothing.? ??? He would not enter any categories/contests, but he would just come up on an unsuspecting person from behind?and?just stand there (those in other costumes).....too creepy!!!! ?? He would not make a sound......which only added to the suspense.??? He was?TOTALLY silent.?? At the end,? he would make his way out of the auditorium, leaving us behind speculating who he was.???? My parents guessed that he was Paul Schultz, but it was never confirmed.??? Every year there was a scary person there that did not get in the contest......just hung around......
?
I remember Wava Johnson being in the old fashioned baby carriage.??? I never laughed so much......she had a baby bonnet on and a baby bottle.......?? I wonder if pictures were taken of her......

Just an update on the clown phobia. I think that Halloween somehow is the time I started my clown problem. Or maybe it was the cheapo Circus in Canton (I think that is where it was). Canton also has the zoo with the toothless lion or tiger with the mange.

Does anyone recall the annual costume event in the High School auditorium where they had prizes for best costume, best themed character, most stupid costume, least favorite person, coolest costumed teacher, most portly character dressed in poor taste, dopiest adult trying to look like a kid in a costume, unscariest kid in a Lone Ranger mask toting a capgun (back when weapons were allowed in schools--like a knife to cut up your orange or apple which your mom put in your lunch),
Little Red Riding Hood lookalikes, Cinderella with boots instead of slippers, Seven Dwarfs (one shy of a brickload), Clarabelle the C....,
a cheapo ghost costumed non-identifiable boy or girl, countless scarecrows who could not scare a bird, pumpkin heads, locals dressed as doorstops, non-costumed parents who looked like they wore costumes,
teachers with bad breath, and various and sundry other oddballs that may qualify as Wal Mart photo candidates today?

Anyways, I digress.

Back to the clown thing. My dad always dressed up as Emmett Kelly
the sad sack clown. I think I may have had to dress up like a mini
clown for the event. I always thought my dad was better in his non
clown attire. So that's how I may have this clown thing going for me.

Bring on the mimes and send out the clowns.

Just reminiscing,

Have a scary Halloween. Don't OD on the cider and doughnuts (like I did once at the PTA refreshment section at the High School Halloween event,

John

That story about diverting trucks to the cemetery is hilarious.

In today's times it would have made a good U Tube video.

Before Bergie got a city owned police car, does anyone recall what

I'm thinking of Broderick Crawford and his TV show Highway Patrol.

Question: Was there a jail in Dalton for Bergie to send offenders

It was like a light blue and white 53ish?Chev.? I remember when Dalton won a big game and all the boosters and everyone drove down main street tooting and celebrating and?did not stop for the one of two red lights at the east end.? Bergie anhd his deputy, Barney Fife, handed out the tickets which the mayor Kate Slusser later dismissed.

Bergie, Community Halloween Party, & Childhood Memories

Thanks Gwen for sharing those stories.? They were very interesting and funny.?I'm glad I didn't know Bergie on a personal basis, which means thank God I never got a ticket.? I did know Phyllis Berg and went with her, Sylvia Slabach, and some other gals for a weekend campout one time down to Tappen dam, I believe.? This was after high school.
?
And John D., I do remember the Community Halloween costume party up at the high school.? I asked my Mom about it again the other night.? This was something that took place on Halloween night and "Trick or Treat" was always on another designated night - correct?? Anyway, I was young (don't know how old that would have been), but I was along and remember I was scared because of all the scarey costumes of the adults, but remember this one time that some of my Mom's friends - Wava Johnson (Keith Johnson's Mom and Don Johnson's Aunt)?was dressed up as a baby and in an old fashioned baby carriage.? I think maybe her husband, Myron, pushed the carriage - not sure.? Then my Grandma Smith or else my Mom was in some kind of white long underware costume with balls all over it and think some young guys?had a stick and was poking it at my Mom or Grandma, which made me really afraid, as I knew who was in that costume.? I'm so glad my parents, and my Grandma were "fun" people and exposed me to stuff like that.? I also remember years later, when Mr. Dodez, was a neighbor of ours on Fahmey St. and Mom would dress up in something weird and go over there and not say a word to give away her identity, and don't think he ever knew for sure who it was.? Funny how you can remember these childhood memories, but can't remember what you did two days ago.
?
I also remember my Mom and Dad going to the dances up at the high school auditorium and me and my sister would go to, as well as some of the other couples would bring their kids.? The most fun thing for kids to do at those dances was to slide down the slanted walkways (think they were cement-maybe?painted cement, but a bit slippery)?that was on the end of the rows and on either side of the auditorum.? I also remember them doing some square dancing to a caller.? They did one called "Birdie in the Cage."?
?
In Texas, I got into Single Square Dance lessons, and that's where I met my 2nd husband, Brian.? We had hundreds of wonderful times square dancing - what a wonderful activity!? Also I remember up at the school dances that my Mom and Dad went to, that I learned the "Schottische".? This past Aug. up in McKinney, Texas I got to be a guest singer for a dance and the band "Southern Comfort" played the song "Sweeheart Schottische" and I got to dance it again.? It was the same old song as they played back at those Dalton High School community dances.? I think my Mom called them the "Guild" dances- whatever that means.? It brought such memories from my childhood!

Anyhow, when we were in grade school, we had gotten off the bus near there with our neighbor who was in high school at the time. Egged on by him, we broke all of the windows in the building by throwing stones through them. Of course, it was determined who the culprits were. Our neighbor had to go to the Mosers and apologize and promise to work for them to make restitution. We, being little kids, just had to go and apologize - a good lesson learned.

Keith,

This is Addie. The Adrian Amstutz name sounds familiar and his wife, Lela also rings a bell. Was she not a musician, either a pianist or singer. I think Vic Gerber mentioned her name. Talk about memories and details, I'm shocked at what sort of things I remember - as mentioned above. Just got back from the 45th Class Reunion at Goshen College. Classmates were amazed at what I remembered - dumb details but usually ones that bring a laugh! Now, if I could just remember where I placed that organ book that has been missing since the beginning of August!

Does anyone know what Kidron had a 2 room instead of a one room classroom? I remember our 7th and 8th grade years being that the renovated 2 rooms into a classroom/gymnasium in the mid 50's. Must have been a part of the consolidation under Don Baker and Glen Berg. How many other 2 room schools were there in the Dalton School district? Who volunteers to contact the Historical Society of Dalton or the Heritage Center in Kidron to answer these "burning" questions. We could have our own Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy show (minus the big bucks)!

All this talk of old schools jogged my memory. Anyone remember or related to Adrian Amstutz? He was married to Lela to whom I am related. He taught in some of those old schools. He resided in Southern California for many years and I would see him occassionally. He also made visits back to Dalton/Kidron.
This man could remember more details than is probably found at the historical socitey. He could tell you who taught at these schools and when and who attended them and who had the best softball team and even what the score was. He knew whom was related to whom. What a storehouse of knowledge. One of those amazing minds that retained minutia.
Unfortunately I believe most of went with him when he died. We often said he should write or record all that info but I don't believe he ever did.

I have been reading all the posts, just have not been responding.
Sharon's father passed away on Oct. 5 so we are in Arkansas getting ready for an estate sale this weekend and getting the house on the market. Plan to get back to Texas next week in time to get out my clown costume and go visit John.

Addie,
My mother attended a one room school called the "Valley School". It stood right next to the Valley Church. It had eight grades. A family later on moved in that old school. I think the school is torn down now, but it was on Goudy Road (in modern times) . They didn't have names for roads back then.

Another one room school was at the corner of Route 30 & Kurzen Road (just across from the current Dalton YMCA). I think that the Close (as in Gary) family lived there. Later the Mason family...... That school has been torn down in recent years.

John,
i just thought of another one room school house - Silver Hill. It's on the Kidron Road between Route 30 and the big town of Kidron. It too was used for storage but more for clothing because in HS, Mom made me go with her to sort clothing. If it was flimsy material or needed bottons sewn on, or any sort of repairs, it went on the Salvation Army pile. If it was warmer clothing and in good condition, it went on the MCC pile. Don't know why, because MCC also has clothing drives for Africa and South America where heat is an issue. It could have been a modesty issue too, for all I know.

yes, my mother talked about your Mom teaching or maybe going to school with her. My mother's name was Esther Bixler before she married Paul Amstutz. And your mother's maiden name was? Could she have attended one of the schools in the country - like Sonnenberg or Boone School? It seems to me that some of the Dalton folks who lived south of Route 30 did attend the country schools, back in those days.

Gosh, we need a time capsule. Well, actually, the Kidron Heritage Center would have all this information - no doubt.

Anyone else in class of '59 have parents who attended, or taught, in a one room school house out in the country?

Time for some shut eye.

Thanks Addie. I think my mother either attended the Sonnenberg one
room school or maybe taught there. i don't recall. That is the school I was trying to remember. I think the one room school close to Marshallville may also have been used as a Grange Hall. I think we passed by that building on our way back to the Cleveland Airport from Orrville on Route 93 or 94 or whatever route it is now. Maybe it is Route 545 , 585 or something like that between Burton City and Marshallville.

Chuck:

That website does explain the cousin removal pretty good.

Now I should try to put some names with it to see how it works.

Silly me. I thought the cousin removal thing somehow referred to
spouses and second or third wives of relatives.

How do you remove cousins from the removal list for those you don't
actually know?

?
There was a one-room school building on what is now Withrich Road and on land owned by Calvin Moser at the time.? From what I can see on Google maps, it does not appear to be there now.? Anyhow, when we were in grade school, we had gotten off the bus near there with our neighbor who was in high school at the time.? Egged on by him, we broke all of the windows in the building by throwing stones through them.? Of course, it was determined who the culprits were.? Our neighbor had to go to the Mosers and apologize and promise to work for them to make restitution.? We, being little kids, just had to go and apologize?- a good lesson learned.

In so doing, a large hole was made on the east side of the structure thus ruining the original.?? I think it's doors were closed in the early to mid 50's-whenever Kidron and Dalton became a consolidated school system.?? For many years it was used to store collected clothing and furniture for MCC until a semi truck could pick up a truck load to take to Akron, PA.

OK. Here's a question for someone in our group who specializes in genalogy. Just what is a second cousin three times removed. I remember lots of older people at family reunions trying to describe how they are somehow related to each other.

When they start talking about second cousins three times removed, I have no clue what they are talking about. Anyone have any ideas as to how to explain the relative concept?

I think I understand brothers, sisters and first cousins. Anything beyond that is a puzzle.

room school or maybe taught there. i don't recall.

Re: OLD OHIO SCHOOLS

All this talk of old schools jogged my memory.? Anyone remember or related to Adrian Amstutz?? He was married to Lela to whom I am related.? ?He taught in some of those old schools.? He resided in Southern California for many years and I would see him occassionally.? He also made visits back to Dalton/Kidron.?
This man could remember more details than is probably found at the historical socitey.? He could tell you who taught at these schools and when and who attended them and who had the best softball team and even what the score was.? He knew whom was related to whom.? What a storehouse of knowledge.? One of those amazing minds that retained minutia.
Unfortunately I believe most of went with him when he died.? We often said he should write or record all that info but I don't believe he ever did.
I have been reading all the posts, just have not been responding.?
Sharon's father passed away on Oct. 5 so we are in Arkansas getting ready for an estate sale this weekend and getting the house on the market.? Plan to get back to Texas next week in time to get out my clown costume and go visit John.

John,
i just thought of another one room school house - Silver Hill.? It's on the Kidron Road between Route 30 and the big town of Kidron.? It too was used for storage but more for clothing because in HS, Mom made me go with her to sort clothing.? If it was flimsy material or needed bottons sewn on, or any sort of repairs, it went on the Salvation Army pile.? If it was warmer clothing and in good condition, it went on the MCC pile.? Don't know why, because MCC also has clothing drives for Africa and South America where heat is an issue.? It could have been a modesty issue too, for all I know.
?
yes, my mother talked about your Mom teaching or maybe going to school with her.? My mother's name was Esther Bixler before she married Paul Amstutz.? And your mother's maiden name was?? Could she have attended one of the schools in the country - like Sonnenberg or Boone School?? It seems to me that some of the Dalton folks who lived south of Route 30 did attend the country schools, back in those days.
?
Gosh, we need a time capsule.? Well, actually, the Kidron Heritage Center would have all this information - no doubt.
?
Anyone else in class of '59 have parents who attended, or taught, in a one room school house out in the country?
?
Time for some shut eye.

Addie,
My mother attended a one room school called?the "Valley School".??? It stood right next to the Valley Church.??? It had eight grades.????A family later on moved in that old school.??? I think the school is torn down now, but it was on Goudy Road (in modern?times).??? They didn't have names for roads back then.???
?
Another one room school was at the corner of Route 30 & Kurzen Road (just across from the current Dalton YMCA).??? I think that the Close (as in Gary) family lived there.????Later the Mason family......???? That school has been torn down in recent years.

John,
i just thought of another one room school house - Silver Hill.?

Time for some shut eye.

Thanks Addie. I think my mother either attended the Sonnenberg one
room school or maybe taught there. i don't recall. That is the school I was trying to remember. I think the one room school close to Marshallville may also have been used as a Grange Hall. I think we passed by that building on our way back to the Cleveland Airport from Orrville on Route 93 or 94 or whatever route it is now. Maybe it is Route 545 , 585 or something like that between Burton City and Marshallville.

Looks like Orrville wins the prize for mass destruction of its schools.

I can't believe the number of schools closed or pending demolition on the list of Wayne County Schools.

Word has it that Orrville is planning a megaschool (maybe reverting to the one room school concept--only on a bigger scale).

In re: Dalton grade school closed in 1953/1954 I think the reason it said the location was on Lincoln Highway was that was before the duals
were setup as US 30 as it bypassed Dalton. I remember the truck traffic on Lincoln Highway before the bypass as the traffic came roaring past our house on East Main Street next to Nussbaum's filling station where I could buy a Grapette for a nickel.

So I guess the relative location of the old grade school was Lincoln Highway (aka Main Street).

I guess the photo could also have shown the location as Dalton Cemetery since that was nearby.

Maybe they used the old school rubble for recycled tombstones for
the cemetery.

You know...dust to dust, ashes to ashes.

Too bad they leveled the old grade school. It was probably built better than the schools that followed. Nothing like breahing in asbestos for eternity. Some say that asbestos wsrps your mind.
Somehow it did not affect me.

Question. Why don't they list some of those old one room school houses that surrounded the Dalton metroplex? I vaguely remember there
were some around there..just not sure where they were located or their names. Anyone have an idea where they were located or their names?

Have a day.

Re: OLD OHIO SCHOOLS

John,
I attended the Sonneberg one room school.? It is still standing across the road from the Salem Mennonite Church.? The old hand pump was still standing when I visited it in January '09.? The reason it can not be put on the historic record is because "someone" used it as an extra shed to house tractors, a boat or something larger than a shed could house.? In so doing, a large hole was made on the east side of the structure thus ruining the original.? I think it's doors were closed in the early to mid 50's-whenever Kidron and Dalton became a consolidated school system.? For many years it was used to store collected clothing and furniture for MCC until a semi truck could pick up a truck load to take to Akron, PA.
?
My mother attended a one room school house called "Boone School" but I'm not sure where it was located.? I think maybe over in the area where Harley Hofstetter now lives.? Wasn't there one in the Marshalville area too?
?

?

Looks like Orrville wins the prize for mass destruction of its schools.

I can't believe the number of schools closed or pending demolition on the list of Wayne County Schools.

Word has it that Orrville is planning a megaschool (maybe reverting to the one room school concept--only on a bigger scale)..

Have a day.

John

Well, it started out as a recital but I've asked 2 other organists to help.?? I was priviledged to study (one semester) with Jan Bender, a German Lutheran composer while in Columbia SC.?? He died in 1994 and this is 100th birth year.?? While in that fair city, not only did I study with him, the music prof at the seminary (where Dave was studying) asked me to take Herr Bender and his wife to the weekly organ recitals around town.?? He showed his appreciation by giving me autographed copies of much of his music.?? It's from this "mini" Bender library that will serve as the basis of the recital.?? A lot of his music is based on hymns so the audience will sing the hymns first, then the organists will play.

I lived with 2 different Japanese girls in college and have visited one of them who lives on the northern island of Hokkaido.?? My world continues to grow as I trust each of your is growing.?? That in no way takes presidence to the love of the history of Dalton/Kidron OH.?? As Linda mentioned, since most of us have Swiss/German heritage, by virtue of the fact that we grew up in Wayne Co., that's where I got my interest in going back to my roots and the love for others who came to the States.

Halloween Flashback

jhdouglas59

John
