Re: Thanks for the memories

Gwen Meier

I have been wondering how many of our teachers are still alive.??? Last year, Glenn's class had their 50th reunion and Alberta Berg (widow of? I. Glen Berg) attended.???? They tried to get a hold of Mr. Jogan, but without success.????I think someone told me he lives in Wooster.???? Remember Ruth Moser.......1st or 2nd grade teacher.......she is at Shady Lawn Nursing Home.????? And Mr. Howey's son went on to become Wooster's Mayor.??? He died about a year ago.???? And Mr. Gonter's wife, Pat, is at Shady Lawn, too.???

Thanks for the information Weasel. I am sure there will be more
forth coming.
I have been looking back at our class of 59 booklet that was put out
and I found some interesting tidbits.

Did you know that Eunice Steiner got the
Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow
Award? I would love to know just how much Eunice has used that
award to shape her future.

Another nickname was Corrine Corky Kurzen. Now where did that name
come from? And Louella Cookie Shane. Would love to hear more about
the history of those names too. Correction on the spelling of the
Hare's nickname ...its Schmink!
I have a note of Lanny Royer being called Spook and Lynn Weikert
being called Nose. Gerald Snyder was Zeeke and Jim Forrer was Slick.
Yes I am cheating and looking at one of the pages in the senior book.

Thanks Gwen for sharing that funny story. Coach McFarren was a
treasure we all got to enjoy. Those teachers are rare today. Keep
the memories coming!

Re: no longer a yahoo virgin/nicknames

Gwen Meier

I am just cracking up over this e-mail.??? I never could figure out ?how all those nicknames came about.????? I have to tell a little story.?????When I would visit my mother (she's in Shady Lawn Nursing Home), I would often see Bill McFarren there, visiting his wife,?Betty.??? When Betty died, I sent him a card and told him I had good memories of his wife.??? He responded with a note addressed to "Gwen & Cleo Meier".???? Just too funny!!!!!!!?

Researched today.

From my memory (which may not always be intact anymore), here are my
recollections of nicknames for several of our class members:

Weasel (me): On one of the back roads around Dalton (of which there are
many), I spotted some kind of varmint in front of the car. I don't
recall who was driving. Anyways, this beast darted in front of our
speeding car (Ford, Chevy or some Mopar car) and I thought it was a
weasel. Everyone laughed and hence the name--Weasel.

Schminck (John Hare): I'm not sure about this name but I suspect it is
in tandem with me being called Weasel. I think he was then called Mink
which somehow got twisted into Schminck. This is just a guess.

Cash (Jerry Amstutz): He always enjoyed playing cards and seemed to
always win and then he got the name Cash. Another guess.

Hebe (Herb Eberly): This must have been a variation of his first and
last name.

Friction (Keith Goudy): Can't figure this one out.

Shook Up (Don Johnson): Sometimes got shook up--hence the name.

Lammy(Lanny Royer): A derivative of Lanny.

Cat (Harold Saurer): Cat like quickness.

Lymmie (Lynn Weikert): A derivative of Lynn.

If anyone else had nicknames, I don't remember them. If the stuff above
is wrong, who cares?

It makes good conversation. Any error corrections would be appreciated.

Letter to Classmates

Patricia Dearolf Lee

Well surprise its ME again with my passion for bringing this class
together. I feel like I am beating a dead horse as there has been
little to no response from you that have joined the group> Yes I am
sassy and bossy but I am also passionate about getting this reunion
to be a great weekend with renewed friendships. It is VERY important
to me! And to a seemly few others. SO if you share the same passion
please jump on board and communicate with the rest of us. You can't
be that busy! Below is a copy of a letter that I will be sending out
to the classmates (via snail mail) that I know of that have not
joined the group or perhaps do not have email. This is ONE of my
final attempts. If i don't get a good response I am going to
personally go to Dalton this fall and knock on some doors! Seriously
I love you guys and girls and want us to reunite! Lets just do it!
You that are online.....Help me out here!

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Hey class of Dalton High 1959:

Next year about this time we will be getting ready to join together
for our 50th class reunion. Can you believe that much time has gone
by?
I see you holding hands with the rest of us and becoming entwined.
(for those of you who do not get the letter i have stationery that is
lined with a border of people holding hands)

Some of you have joined the yahoo classmates group
and to those of you who have
not had the opportunity to do, I would extend to you that
invitation. I am not on the planning committee of the reunion, I
have just started the Yahoo group to try to unite us before the event.

It is my passion and also important to the others that have joined
the group to connect to the rest of you before the weekend if
possible. Hopefully we can get reacquainted before that time. We
especially want you that live locally to be involved as you have a
lot to share with us about our hometown and your lives.

We want to make this a weekend to remember and each of you are a very
important part of my life. Many of us spent 12 years together and
have made many memories. Lets make the most of our time together.
Those of you that are not online please write me or call me so we can
reconnect in the next year either by phone or letter.

I am not sure what the plans for the reunion are but there was a
survey sent out last fall. I have not heard the results but
hopefully they will be forthcoming soon. I am looking forward to
hearing from you soon by email, (pjlee123@...) phone or
letter.

The Last 49 Years

Not too long ago, Patricia (Dearolf) Lee posted a note about what she
has been doing since high school graduation. She asked that we all
do the same, but so far the response has been minimal. In a recent
email to me, she mentioned the lack of activity on the Dalton59 Yahoo
site, so I promised to try getting the ball rolling again with my
update. So here goes……

After high school graduation I went to work at the Mardigan
Corporation in Wooster. I did electrical maintenance work. I
continued the flight lessons I had started during my senior year in
high school.

In 1960, I obtained my Commercial and Flight Instructor pilot
licenses. I began giving flight instruction part time at the
Orrville Airport while continuing to work full time at Mardigan. One
of my students was Suzanne Scallon, a girl I would fall in love with.

The fellow who wrote the insurance for Orrville's airport asked me to
go into the insurance business with him. I started my insurance
career in June of 1962. Later that year I married Suzanne and we
moved to North Canton, Ohio, where our insurance office was located.

I did a fair amount of flying in conjunction with our insurance
business. I also continued to give flight instruction part time at
McKinley Air Transport at the Akron-Canton Airport.

In 1966 Suzanne and I attended the Reading (Pa) air show where United
and American Airlines were recruiting pilots. That stirred my
interest in airline flying. February 1, 1967 started my airline
career with Allegheny Airlines (which changed its name to USAir and
then USAirways.) Suzanne and I moved to the Pittsburgh area later
that year with our two young children, Christopher and Rebecca. Our
youngest child, Deborah would come along about 10 years after Rebecca.

We lived in the Pittsburgh area for 27 years. We loved to vacation
on large inland lakes and were always looking for that "dream
location" where we could retire. When the merger between USAir and
Piedmont occurred it presented the opportunity to move to the
Charlotte, NC area. We settled in at our present location on Lake
Norman, about 25 miles North of Charlotte.

I retired from airline flying in July of 1999 and enjoy boating,
golfing, and my hobby of 51 years, Amateur (Ham) Radio.

Christopher and his wife Toni and grandson Antonio, live in Hebron,
Ky which is near the Cincinnati Airport. Chris is a mechanic with
Delta Airlines. Antonio is four years old.

Rebecca and her husband Rob and our grandson Sam, live about 25
minutes away from us here in NASCAR country. Sam wants to be a race
car driver and has started driving quarter midget racers. Sam is
eight years old.

Deborah is still unmarried and lives in Baltimore. She is a Doctor
of Pharmacy and teaches at the University of Maryland.

So there you have it, the highlights of what I have been doing for
the last 49 years. Everyone is waiting to hear what you have been
doing. Don't keep us waiting any longer!

I explained my name change from Adeline to Addie for dalton59. When
did you begin using elizabeth? Just curious. It was good to get a

all these names that I've not thought of in years.

So - does that mean we should call you Corrine and try not to slip-up even when Corky is on the tip of our tongue?? Are you still at the U of Penn?

Speaking of names - I was Corky through high school then in May, 1967 immediately after I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania I took a job as a nursing supervisor at a large teaching hospital.? I was 25 at the time and needed all the credibility I could get so I said my name was Corrine.? I only knew one other person at the hospital and she swore she would never tell.? That's my name story.? Corrine

Hi Betty,
I explained my name change from Adeline to Addie for dalton59. When
did you begin using elizabeth? Just curious. It was good to get a
phone call from Nancy Withrich several weeks ago and it's good to see
all these names that I've not thought of in years.

He was the plant manager.? I met him through my wife's parents and the Orrville Airport.? I subsequently gave him some flying lessons.

Yes, I can understand.? When Paul was helping me with e-mail problems, he had to ask whether I preferred Addie or Adeline.? I prefer Addie but for old school friends, Adeline is fine.? I think it's interesting to hear how we've change certain things and why.? Guess I'm the kind of person who likes human interest stories as opposed to science fiction.

It's a long story, but when my kids - were 8 and 10, I remarried and one day Vonda, (the 8 year old) said "mom, your name sounds so corny? Betty Blackman - you should use the name Elizabeth" and Craig (10) agreed....so at that time I has also changed jobs and the use of my formal name for signing documents became the norm.? Some of my old close friends still call me Betty or Betty Ann?- but most everyone around here knows me as Elizabeth - even my husband calls me Elizabeth.? - Sometimes that throws a curve to my siblings, but they've gotten used to it.
