As far as I know, Riceland is still there, although it has been twenty or more years since I played there.? I never played there when we were in high school, because I thought then that golf was such a stupid game.? Later, it became an obsession; then I gave it up for ten years.? Now, it has gotten to the point where it is just fun to go out and play a few holes and I don't really care about the score.? We belong to a club where they have a nine-hole course where the tees are different for the back nine, but it is essentially playing the same nine holes all over again;? so, playing only nine holes is best and playing eighteen is too much, unless it is a tournament or something.? I played nine this afternoon and it was fun, the air was great and it was a good 2-mile walk.

Hi Everybody:
?
Linda Fahrney/Freeland here!? I want to repsond to this memory about the party where a bunch of us played "Post Office."? Mentioned by both Pat and Lanny and here's Lanny's comments about it below...
?
=========
I remember we had get togethers at a large two story house on Main east side of Dalton, north side, and I think it was the Bodager or Meisner home.? I'm not sure how many times we played that goofy game I only know there were several of us there.
Lanny?
======
You all may have had another "Kissing" party at the Meisner home (don't remember where that was), but I went to the party at Connie and Dick Bodager's house and there were gobs of guys and girls there.? (would be interesting if everybody would reveal if they were there or not).? And yes, we played "Post Office" and must have been the first time for that game for me!? Cause I've never forgot it.? That's the memory I have when I drive by Connie's house even today.
I want to confirm Pat's stories about a lot of girls doing and learning to do acrobats in the old school house in the basement girl's bathroom.? I remember doing that too!? I know one time I did a flip with no hands and don't how I did that to this day.? It's a wonder we didn't crack our heads on the cement floor and kill ourselves.? Pat says we used a big rubber cushioned pad.? I don't remember that - but maybe so.? I remember that Karen, Connie, and Nancy W. were the best and were featured later on in some kind of a talent show (or maybe a side act to one of our operettas that we had.
By the way everybody, I got a call about two weeks ago on a Sat. morning and it was Karen Eckard Baer.? We had a good visit on the phone and I told her about all the Yahoo group and how much fun it was.? She said to say "Hi" to everybody.? I asked her if she was not on line and she informed me that she was not a computer person.? I usually see Karen or at least talk to her when I go home as she was my childhood friend (both her and Jeff Eckard) as we just lived across the field from their houses and we did some serious playing as young children.? She is well and has a wonderful family and grandchildren that her and Mike visit often.? She retired a couple of years ago from her beauty salon that she had in her house.
Speaking of operetta's - does anybody remember one we did when we were about 9 or 10 years old?? I don't remember what grade that would have been.? I had a pretty big part in it and I was a "Teakettle."? Gwen, I remember you were in this one and was either a broom or a "Teapot."? I had to sing a song and it started out "A teakettle's life is a merry one (and then I forgot the words) and just sang? La, la, la, la, la, la, the rest of the song!? I know the song of "I'm a Little Teapot- short and stout" was also sang.? Don't remember any of the boy's parts.? Also anybody remember the operetta - "The Pied Piper of Hamlin" with all the rats following.? Let's hear from you if you do and who was in that one?????
More later from me...

?
Do you remember when the amish buggy was disassembled and reassembled on the roof of a downtown business?? I remember the sheriff coming to school asking questions about the incident.?

Kate Smith died physically in 1986 but her rendition of "God Bless America" will always continue.? I remember when ever I was sick and had to stay home, I would watch TV, Arthur Godfrey, Tennessee Ernie Ford (sp) and many other shows and she appeared on them as well and the weekly variety shows, Ed Sullivan, Milton Burle, etc.? We usually had a conflict on Sunday evenings as I wanted to watch "The Comedy Hour" and others wanted Ed Sullivan.? That was then followed by "The Sid Cesar Show".?
Someone earlier mentioned The Ted Mack Amateur Hour.? My sister Bonnie appeared live on that show from New York on May 21, 1961 playing the Marimba.? She was 18 at the time.? Someone recently found an archive tape of the show and made a CD for her and I now have a copy.

I'm playing it now on my vintage cassette deck. No "God Bless

You're right. Kate Smith lives on and on and on.

I'm playing it now on my vintage cassette deck. No "God Bless

You're right. Kate Smith lives on and on and on.

How about Riceland?? I remember when my brother and cousin Wade use to play
golf at Riceland before we got into high school.? Is Riceland still there and did anyone else play there?? Also I vaguely remember a high school bowling team, or am I halucinating?

Hi Everybody:
?
Linda Fahrney/Freeland here!? I want to repsond to this memory about the party where a bunch of us played "Post Office."? Mentioned by both Pat and Lanny and here's Lanny's comments about it below...
?
=========
I remember we had get togethers at a large two story house on Main east side of Dalton, north side, and I think it was the Bodager or Meisner home.? I'm not sure how many times we played that goofy game I only know there were several of us there.
Lanny?
======

Lanny I am glad I did not get involved in those parties.?? The only?parties I remember are
Slumber parties where we played spin the bottle at Connie bodagers ............ ....and slumber parties at betty hostettlers ? And we walked to Orrville by the back roads by moonlight to the root beer stand.? I know that more of you girls have slumber party stories so bring them on!???

Ok you guys are killing me.? I'm starting to flow with the memories, now comes the things we used to do that was not exactly good.? I remember on halloween night time when we used to cruise the back country roads looking for corn shocks farmers put up.? We used to practice our tackling by running thru ?fields and knocking them down.? I remember one smart farmer who put stakes in the middle of the shocks, OUCH!?
?
Do you remember when the amish buggy was disassembled and reassembled on the roof of a downtown business?? I remember the sheriff coming to school asking questions about the incident.?
?
How about Lanny Rossiter?? I remember the name.? He dated a girl (?) in school and I remember everyone used to tease her about dating a jailbird because he spent time in jail.? I believe that girl eventually dated Emer (Els) Royer from East Greenville who was my cousin.? He served time in the Army as a helicopter mechanic and liked to hang out with the Dalton school kids.? Any memories of him or her??
?
I remember parties where we used to place our hands over our mouths and noses and blow out emitting no air causing ourselves to pass out.? That is why some of us are now brainless and lucky to be alive.??

Hi Everybody:
?
Linda Fahrney/Freeland here!? I want to repsond to this memory about the party where a bunch of us played "Post Office."? Mentioned by both Pat and Lanny and here's Lanny's comments about it below...
?
=========
I remember we had get togethers at a large two story house on Main east side of Dalton, north side, and I think it was the Bodager or Meisner home.? I'm not sure how many times we played that goofy game I only know there were several of us there.
Lanny?
======

Yes, I remember of seeing Johnny Carson in NYC, but I had forgotten the name of the show.

Chuck:

You are correct. My mother never cared for the name "Weasel".
I tried to explain it to her many times but she never understood.
To her, I was always "Johnny". Little Johnny Douglas. Call me John,
Jack, or Weasel but don't call me Johnny. I don't know why, but that
name Johnny always sounded weird to me. I really can't explain why I
liked Johnny Carson though; his name just sounded better being called
Johnny than being called John. Speaking of Johnny Carson, does
anyone remember seeing Johnny Carson live on "Who Do You Trust" when
we went on our senior trip to New York? That was the highlight of
the New York portion of the NY/DC trip. I think the Rockettes at
Radio City Music Hall ranked a close second. The Statue of Liberty
ranked third and the Statue of Liberty was in fourth place (the
Johnny Douglas rating system). You know what? That actually sounds
pretty good...the Johnny Douglas rating system has a certain ring to
it. Maybe I've mellowed a tad and my mother was right after all to
call me Johnny. The older I get, the better I used to be.

Just rambling,

The Weaselmeister

There are other histories of the founding as well and provide reading

I had a "PS" on my Halloween story.??? It was a REALLY DUMB thing to do, taking that oil lantern. but we were just dumb, stupid kids.??? They didn't shoot at us, just up in the air.???? I bet they were laughing when they saw us running across the field, scared out of our wits.??? That ended my crime spree for good.??? That and the fact that my Dad had gotten wind of it and he chewed me out real good...........?????

Hi everybody,
We are back from our trip to Yellowstone.?? We had a wonderful time; saw lots of wildlife, including a grizzly.??? In addition, we saw 3 black bears (one just inches from our?car),?a coyote?tossing a snake up in the air,?a river otter swimming in the Yellowstone River, and tons of bison.??? We hiked several miles around the park and saw up close and personal the many flowers, mud pots, geysers, etc.?? We even saw a bald eagle on its nest at the top of a tree.??? The park was spectacular! !!!????
?
When I got home, I had 129 e-mail messages, mostly from you all.??? I loved it!!!!??? I contacted Betty Geiser about this ice skating pond.?? She e-mailed me back and said she remembers the pond well.??? She said it is on the Bob Romey property and when it would really get cold, he would build a fire.???
?
I have?my own?Halloween story to tell.??? Glenn and I stole an oil lantern from an Amish school.??? They lit it every night and we got the idea to take it and hang it on the flagpole outside of our high school.??? We did that.??? Several days later, I was riding around with Paul Zuercher, Louella Shane, and a couple more classmates at night (it was still Halloween season) and we drove by that same Amish school.?? Another lit lantern was setting on the steps.??? I talked my fellow classmates into stopping the car, turning off the lights, and we would get the lantern.??? We went sneaking across the field and when one of us picked up the lantern, gunshots went off.??? They were waiting for us......we all raced back to the car and sped off.???? Never in my life had I been so scared!!!!???? I remember Cookie ducking down on the floor in the back seat, fearful for her life!!!!??
?
About Meyers Lake, I remember that I, too, liked that ride that went out over the water.???? The first time I went on the roller coaster, I was scared out of my wits......I thought I was going to fall out.??? I was with Connie Bodager and she had been on it many times and she just took it in stride.??? Me......I was petrified!!! !????? Glenn and I went back to see where Meyers Lake Amusement Park had been last year while we were in Ohio and you are right, John, it is now all condos with just a hint of a lake there (mostly reeds and marshes).???
?
On the 4th of July, we would go to the Douglas Reunion (same as John) at Orr Park.??? My mother and his father were first cousins.??? To this day, that reunion still gets together on July 4th, but not at Orr Park.??? Clarabel Kurzen, Brenda Douglas, Floyd Douglas still attend.??? If I am in Ohio on the 4th, I go to this reunion.??? It has been many years since I have attended.??? Denise (our daughter) and Aaron (our son) have attended this reunion in recent years.?
?
More later.???

No - not Camp Luz.? This was in or around downtown Kidron.? They had roaring fires going and everybody would be there.? Somebody has got to know the name of it.? If I heard it, I would recognize it.

Do you mean ice skating at Camp Luz?? That was the best place for skating.? I remember calling Cheynne to see if she was going and usually there were others from school and church.? Saturdays and Sundays were the best times because there were more people to see.? From our kitchen window, we could see people skating (we lived on the top of the first hill on?Kidron Road just after turning off from Rt 30.? Since my ice skating days, another lake on the other side of the Nickle Plate railway has been built.? It's Lake Harmony and it has a Dalton address.? Both are man made lakes.? I never got to go ice skating in a rink - having a natural outside facility in my back yard.? Of course, we didn't have luxury of?organ music, live or canned.!? I'm glad you have fun memories of organ music.? Many people hear it and think - who died?

Hi John & Class of 59 - HAPPY 4TH OF JULY
Just a quick reply before I dash out to meet my daugheters, son-in-law for lunch and some fun!
?
John, the pond I had to crawl back to the edge of the field, was down south of my Grandma Smith's - do you remember where Dick Simpson lived and some of the Blossers.
?
But to the pond where you had your ice skating tragedy - YES, there was a pond off of 30 and kind of to the back where we lived.? Don't know who lived there, but they let anybody use it to skate on.? Come to think of it.? I don't think there was a house built there when we first started skating there, but later there was.? I used to go there and skate in the winter when they let us out of classes - during final test times (when we only had to show up for school when we had a final scheduled).? I'm sure Addie and other Kidronites remember the wonderful place they had to skate in Kidron.? I went there a few times and it was fabulous!
?
Organ music at Skate rink.? I kind of remember a little glass box where maybe a man sat in and played the organ from there.? But wherever that glorious music came from, I was in the heighth of glory to skate across the floor to it!? It was combining the two loves of my life- music and dancing!? I remember the little practice rink too - I'm sorry you hardly ever made it out of there!? Ha!
?
As Jimmy Durante said, "Thanks for the memories!"

Was that frozen pond kind of in back of your house across new US 30?
I think that was the pond where I had my skating disaster. I don't
remember where Rudy Road was.

I thought of the Skateland name too, but thought that name was too
obvious of a name for a roller skating rink. Thanks for solving the
puzzle. Was there a real organ there or was it a recording? Live or
Memorex? I don't know the difference. All those organ songs sound
kind of the same to me. I do remember the song "The Happy Organ" by
Dave "Baby" Cortez (I think that was who it was). I don't know if I
ever got onto the big rink or was stuck in the retard area with the
rail you could hang onto. I wasn't exactly a speed demon. But I
tried. Life was fun. Falling down was not.

Wasn't it called "Skateland." I used to love to go over there. It
was so exciting to me. I even took a few roller skating dance
lessons there for a short time. I loved the organ music and when I
hear beautiful organ music today, I think of the roller rink. Yes, I
remember the cheesy skates and thought about them the other day!

ice skates from back in the 1920's and put them on with weak ankles
as well. I was skating in the overflooded field below my Grandma
Smith's house (near 30 and Rudy Rd) and I got out in the middle of
the pond and the leather all tore on those skates as it was rotten
and I had to crawl back to land. I remember saving up my money to
buy some beatiful white ice skates from the Sears and Roebuck catalog
and I had them up until a few years ago and sold them at a garage
sale. I had roller rink skates too.

Re: Check Out Meyers Lake

John, Pat, Others:
?
Meyers Lake - Wow such memories as a kid for this place.? I can remember being really young, and my Mom promising me and my sister, Cheryl, that if we took a good nap in the afternoon, we were going to get to go to Meyers Lake that evening.? You would walk in there and it was night and hear the noises from the roller coaster, the click, click, click of them going up hill and then the screams as they went down hill.? The beautiful Merri-go-round and I still ride them today and think of Meyers Lake.? Of course, the big fat lady laughing her head off.? My favorite ride was called "The Bug" - sort of train like black cars going up and down steep hills on a track.? I think it was sort of to the back of the park.? I liked the big rockets ride that went out over the water, but called it the "Grandma ride" as even Grandmas could go on that and not get scared, but it was relaxing.? The bumper cars were too violent for me and the rickety little car that when back in the scarey tunnel was not for me either.? One of my favorite of all rides was the swings (did the park have that ride?).? I still ride those today with my kids at the Texas State Fair.
?
Some really big bands played Meyers Lake during the Big Band era. ? Pat, thanks for the website.? Those DVD's would really bring back the memories.? They look great.? My last memory of Meyers Lake Park was taking my daughter, Natalie, when she was about 2 and putting her in an area beauty pagent for little ones.? She didn't win, but was still the cutest one up there.? She got up on stage and all she would do would?be to?wave at me.? I'm sure the judges thought I told her to do that, but I did not.? That had to have been about 1967-1968.

Does anyone remember Meyers Lake Amusement Park in Canton? I think it
is long gone. I remember the wooden roller coaster--scared me to death.
Also the fun house with its crazy mirrors and floors. I think there was
a haunted house and some kind of rickety ride thru a tunnel with
strange sounds and spooky things. Then there was the photo booth where
you could take pictures and get them immediately--absolutely amazing at
the time. Their carousel was famous, too as I recall. I think it
ended up at a museum in New England somewhere. And the bumper cars
were amazing. That was fun, because you could pick out some spastic
old man and try to gang up on him and batter his car until it was
wedged against the wall so that he couldn't move. The highlight was to
smash into him headon and watch the look on his face.

Now that I'm the old man, I don't think I will venture into bumper cars
anymore. But it was good clean fun at the time when you were just a
lad.

There was also a ferris wheel that alway seemed to get stuck when you
were at the top of the ride. In the arcade was skee-ball which was
always fun, even though we never won very much. Then you could go ride
on a spinning ride (and get nauseous) and a rocket ride of some kind.

How about all those carnies? They always looked the same every year
and they probably still do. Ageless.

Cedar Point was a lot nicer place to visit (and still is), but Meyers
Lake was a lot closer to us and also cheap. I would like to see what
is there now at Meyers Lake--probably just homes.

What were your favorite things to do at Meyers Lake Amusement Park?

?

?

?

Memories forever

Re: Roller Skating

?
More later,

Memories forever

Thanks for mentioning Miss Campbell and the Latin Class.? I too have found that what little I remember, has been helpful in translating the meaning of words.? The grammer - I've forgotten most of it.? I remember also that if I had a problem with sentence structure, John D and Chuck M would have the answers.? I also remember Miss Campbell talking most about her daughter Dixie and about the Christian Childrens Fund and her adopted children.? Also remember giving money to her for one or more of them as she suggested/requested.? I don't often see ads in magazines for the CCF - not like I once did.? Maybe it's because I don't subscribe to the same magazines I once did.? John - the punctuation rules have change or the uses have become more acceptable.? The US Mail has asked us to use no punctuation when addressing envelopes.? Those who teach English must grow white head trying to keep up with the new rules.? I remember Glenn Berg teaching Senior English in our home room-just outside the Principal's office.? Was that so he could keep an eye on us or was that so he didn't have so far to walk to class?
Algebra was taught by Mr. Gonter who had very thin lips - to hold those cancer sticks.? I hated that class - sure showed.? I got a D in it.? Mrs. Berg, my piano teacher thought all musicians were good in math.? Algebra is not math - it's figuring out how to substitute one thing for another, right?? How does that relate to music?? Musicians aren't good in math - they can only count to 6 or maybe 9.
?
How many girls in our class were part of the Girls Marching Band-made famous at Dalton?? Wouldn't that be considered really sexist now adays?? Does that insinuate that men can't play instruments but only play football?? Or now it's paramount to seeing only girls in car ads.? In college, I justified it as a result of the farming community - boys could play sports but had to hurry home to help with chores.? Didn't girls have to go home to do chores too?
My Dad, although he was on the School Board (when Donald Baker was superintendent, always intiminated that the Mennonite girls couldn't be a part of the band because of the modesty issue.? What can I say - I played the violin!!

Linda/Chuck:

I'm not exactly a writer. I'm probably the class curmudgeon. We all
need a few laughs to keep us (relatively) young.

I did enjoy John J Jogan Jr (remember the 4 JJJJ's) and his classes.
Is he the one who used the Plain English Handbook? I still have that
book with all the grammar stuff in it. I don't think I use the
proper punctuation anymore. But some of the rules stay with you.
Maybe it was Miss Campbell who used that Plain English Handbook. I
remember she also taught Latin. Now there's a useful course you use
everyday. She did throw one mean toga party though in the high
school cafeteria, as I recall.

Does anyone remember going to Pittsburgh for some kind of tour? Was
the Latin class involved in that trip? Just a flashback. All I
remember is that I heard "Come Go With Me" by the Dell Vikings on the
radio in the car on the way to/from Pittsburgh. Was it the Carnegie
Art Center or Museum or something like that? Maybe it was the Mellon
National Bank. Amo, Amas, Amat. Common Latin conjugation or
something like that. Tua sed magna est.

I imagine they teach Spanish these days.

Adios

There are other histories of the founding as well and provide reading

Adios

Have you ever written any articles or anything and tried to have it
published?

homework to do as it was, but I gave it a half-hearted try and
decided to write something set during the Civil War. I think I gave
up on it about 1/3 of the way through. I would like to write a book
though sometime about my life, but could never get anonymous enough
to do it. Maybe someday...

of the biographies of the Founders that have been published in the
last few years. I have read at least two about Washington and
Jefferson, the David McCullough biography of John Adams is excellent,
and there are others about Franklin, Madison, Monroe and others who
were involved. These give a great sense of how this all came about.
There are other histories of the founding as well and provide reading
just as good as most novels.
